This show was NUTS. I have some more videos. I was midway up the stairs filming it.

Is there any chance we could get an official taping policy for The Gracious Few and (hopefully) Live? Something we could print out and show to the venue in case we're questioned?

I started a thread on this topic a while back. Would you like to see an open taping policy?

Im not sure. I think a lot of venues have started to restrict that even if a band has an open taping policy. I know down at the TGF show in DC when they did the Kegs & Eggs event, the bouncers kept telling me to stop taping - however I just kept telling them NO.

Yeah, I understand that some venues deny taping regardless of whether the band approves but having something in writing will give tapers half a chance.

Just a general question - what's the reasoning behind a venue banning taping when a band has OK'd it? What's the venue losing?
I can understand some bands wanting it banned because they may think it will effect future ticket sales if people are content with just watching a video (why you would be content I don't know). And some might fear tapers selling the recording without getting a profit, but it just seems weird for a venue to get involved.
Last week I saw a band and know they have an open taping policy, I got the tap on the shoulder by venue staff and told to stop. When I told the band about this they were pretty pissed saying "what's it to them if we get taped?"

Here's hoping the open taping policy for Live/TGF can continue and venues are cool with that, share the music and share the love. No amount of taping will stop me from buying what they put out.

1. Mic stands/tripods could be hazardous if an evacuation is required.
2. Mic stands/tripods could be used as a weapon.
3. Some venues provide recording services to bands. If the band or fans can do the recording themselves then it deprives them of income.
4. Some bands are very anti-taping and if they see that a venue allows recording they may avoid performing there.
5. In the case of multiple bands performing, it would be difficult to police which bands are pro-taping.

That's about it off the top of my head.

Most venues nowadays don't have an issue with it. Considering phones have become cameras, video cameras and audio recorders there's not much they can do about it. Looking out into the audience there's a sea of LCD screens. Clipping a pair of mics on your collar or holding a small video camera isn't going to bring you much attention.

What equipment were you using to record?

I was just using my iPhone tongue.gif but the recording (and a few that I've done with it) turned out really well. I don't understand why you see recordings on iPhones on YouTube and how they end up so shit. I guess people jump all over the place and cover the mic and stuff.
So nothing professional at my end, but still good results.

I must admit this was the first time I've ever been stopped and I'm guessing it's because being the Spiegletent means its part of the arts centre and they're all official and shit as opposed to a real gig venue like the forum or hi fi bar.
