Ha, that was me on facebook...

If no policy is posted, I will just show up early to the venue (Cincy will be my first show) and hope one of the guys will be around to let the venue security know its ok. Sometimes, they will just let you walk in, set up, record and leave. Different clubs police different things.

Make a soundboard then! bounce.gif

Yup Dan that plexiglass thing is grand

I recently upgraded to one of these: Tascam DR-2d.

Coupled with Sound Professionals Premium Cardioids and a battery box should yield decent results. Though, if video is cool with the band I'd much rather do that smile.gif

Make sure the mics can handle high SPLs.
I taped several shows using a pair of MM-HLSC-1 (Highline Sehnheiser driven stereo cardioid microphones) : http://microphonemadness.com/products/mmhigsencars.htm and a SoundPro battery-box.

The mics are said to handle 138dB SPL without a battery module... but really, that's a lie.
They were good for moderately loud rock shows like David Gray (in a club), but I got slightly to heavy distorted results with Theory of a Deadman (in a club), Skunk Anansie (same club as David Gray) and Nickelback (in a sports hall). And I can assure you the recording levels were set correctly as they never reached the 0dB peak !!

To get rid of that problem, I got my mics modified (4.7k mod - SoundPro can do that on demand, so don't hesitate !!) and I bought a small preamp (Church Audio CA-9100).

Still haven't had the opportunity to test my new rig yet, but will in a couple of days with Lifehouse (which will only be a moderately loud concert I guess).

I taped Live in Munich back in 2006 using SP-BMC-12 and a SP battery-box.
Got slightly distorted bass and bass drums.
Max SPL for the SP-BMC-12 is 125dB when powered with a battery-box. Compare this with the premium cardioid mic you want.

Remember Kevin said "It's never loud enough" rockin.gif lol.gif
I can tell you The Gracious Few will play with levels over 125dB, even in small clubs.

I also heard them say in an interview that they will do a bunch of acoustic songs in the middle of their gig. That means you'll have to change your level settings while recording.

I've had the mics and battery box for over 10 years and recorded a few rock shows (inc. Live / Tool / Foo Fighters) and haven't experienced any distortion. This was via: mics --> battery box --> line in --> Sharp 722 MiniDisc.

Without a battery box (mics --> mic in --> Sharp 722) I do get distortion.

With the Tascam DR-2d, I've only had it for a week so I haven't recorded any proper shows but I have recorded in a small room with 2 electric guitars, drums and bass at a earsplitting volume and so far the results have been pleasing. In fact going through Line In (and using the battery box) still doesn't peak the levels. Weird...

actually, unless you are running your own 24 track recorder, or running a mix from the stage monitors (way too much work and gear needed for a job like this), running a soundboard XLR or RCA out is a waste. drums & vocals are way too high, guitars are way too low. just not listenable....

sometimes the larger places sound better, but im not running the risk. half the fun is recording from the audience, anyway.

I don't want to get greedy, but this is a great idea that a Blues Traveler fan was able to arrange with the band. (link). One spot on the guest list at each show for a taper (and a friend) to record the show, post it to LMA and provide a copy to the band.

brianblank: That would be a nice perk to have but I think the first thing we should focus on is getting an official taping policy and approval to have recordings posted on the Live Music Archive.

Having the band on the LMA will result great exposure in the taper community.

Dewey stated he'll probably be taping the Cincinatti show :
10/26 Cincinnati, OH – 20TH Century Theatre w/American Bang

Brian will attend a show a bit later :
Future show(s): 2010-11-20 [TGF]

Just be patient and you'll be able to enjoy two great tapes wink.gif

Im in for Columbus, too!

Id like to tape Indy, but I dont want to get ahead of myself. Thats a 3+ hour drive, but I might just do it. The CD is becoming my favorite of the year.

Kevin Martin posted a message over at thegraciousfans.com message board.
http://thegraciousfans.com/forum/showthrea...-Gracious-Hello

About the 10$ price drop, he stated that people will be allowed to come on down early and see the sound check.

It would be awesome to have some sound checks recordings too !!! That's not that common banana.gif

I gotta say that is fucking awesome, I love seeing someone from the band openly encouraging taping to help spread the word. Can't wait for some good bootlegs to start surfacing!
