Good songs on Riot Act besides "I am Mine": "Can't Keep," "Save You," "Love Boat Captain," "Thumbing My Way," "All or None:

Good songs on self-titled: All of them. It is a fucking brilliant album. Listen to it. "Life Wasted," "Gone," the beautiful love song called "Parachutes," "Army Reserve," "Severed Hand," all of them. "Inside Job" may be the greatest Pearl Jam song ever written, and, creatively, far surpasses anything Live have ever done.

If you think seeing Live 18 times makes you any sort of expert on good music, go talk to some of the Pearl Jam fans that have seen them 20+ times on their current tour alone. (By the way, it's much more exciting to do that with a band that changes their setlist EVERY night).

It's kind of pointless to discuss Pearl Jam with someone who dismisses their music without even listening to it, but I couldn't resist responding despite those reservations. And don't even try to claim that you HAVE listened to Pearl Jam's music, because if you had you would know that not all of Pearl Jam's latest release is "angry/depressing music."

thank god for the voice of reason in this thread. dont get me wrong - i like live more than i like pearl jam. but for this guy to say that their last two albums arent good.....WOW. and using radio singles doesnt help the argument much.

in my mind, live is becoming the simpsons of my music world....every song used to be great, but unless they bring back the old formula, they are just wasting everyone's time...

Correction:

Pearl Jam's last SEVEN albums have been utter crap.

Ten is the only good thing they've ever done and it only has three good songs on it.

and i assume youre talking about even flow, jeremy and black (or possibly alive). what about once? porch? release?

i really hate when people say that ten is their only good album, when in reality among most fans is that its really one of their worst (even in the band's eyes). if you can't enjoy vs. or yield, you just dont enjoy rock music.

if you tell me that SFBM is better than ANY pearl jam cd, youre off your rocker. vitalogy may be close, only because it's got 2-3 filler/crap tracks. too bad SFBM has half a cd of crap lol.gif

hell, lost dogs, a bside collection, destroys live's last two albums.

Maybe for you, but I doubt it would for me.

All I know is that I loved the single "I Am Mine" and couldn't wait to buy the new album in 2001. One I got the album, I couldn't find another good song. It was a huge disapointment and ended my very brief love affair with Pearl Jam. However, I think I will buy their greatest hits this Xmas because there are enough good songs to make it a worthy purchase.

Did I get directed to a Pearl Jam Website?! WTF?!

I didn't mean to open up an all in brawl over who's better Pearl Jam or Live

My simple point was that Live's career isn't over yet and to say that they will never get in the Hall of Fame I think is selling them a bit short!

I personally don't like Pearl Jam that much due to a concert experience and their songs I think just aren't what they used to be. Thats my opinion. You can respond how you like, I would like to think that someday Live will be in the Hall of Fame and I will live with that hope and one day you just never know!!

I agree Eddie vedders voice isnt what it used to be when he was 25.Hes 42 now and his style is going to take its toll.I would like to see LIVE get in too im not a LIVE hater but Im just a realist.Unlike LIVE tho PJ has stayed true to themselves and if you say that LIVE hasnt sold out and just went with what sells these days i.e. pop music then its not even worth arguing about.

Now its my turn smile.gif I seriously hope your joking!!!

LIVE sold themselves out?!!!! no.gif You can't be serious no.gif

Live sold alot more in the TC days, if that was the issue then why wouldn't they just keep making those sort of albums?? They've barely sold themselves out to pop music!

I can't believe you called yourself a fan yet you have all these negativites surrounding the band and the music!!

God...I am so frustrated!!

I love the way this thread has gone gloriously off topic. It started off as "will Live ever be inducted into the hall of fame" to a bit of a who's entitled to piss up a wall the highest, Pearl Jam fans or Live fans. *rolls up sleeves* Time to wade in.

I don't like Pearl Jam, I make no bones about it - they just aren't my cup of tea - gimme Soundgarden or Alice In Chains any day. However, I can see the artistic merit in their music, the lyrical intelligence and the influence they have had on other bands. I'd say they're a dead cert for getting into the rock n roll hall of fame in the next few years. I'd still rather gouge my own eyes with a plastic spork than listen to them, though.

Live on the other hand - I adore this band. I concede that they haven't really done anything radical or groundbreaking and I can't think of a single mainstream band they've inspired. There's more chance of me getting extreme dog walking accepted as an exhibition sport in the 2012 Olympics than Live getting in the rock n roll hall of fame, ever. It's not a slur on Ed and the boys, they just fit the criteria along with many other brilliant bands out there. Yes, they've made a couple of dodgy albums, but I have derived such pleasure from Live's music for more than a decade, I can forgive them that. I really don't care if a whole plethora of bands are 'technically' better, have a bigger fanbase, blah, blah, blah. Music is a very personal thing and if we all like the same thing it would be a very dull world and we'd all be listening to fucking Nickelback.

Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty has always been a huge Live fan. If you listen to the band's first album you can see definate similarites. He also names Live as one of the top 5 concert acts he ever has seen. Matchbox Twenty was a definate Live spin-off. I'm sure there are many others but I know that one for sure.

Live has as good a chance of getting into the Hall of Fame as the band I played in in college does.

That's why they need to make some music that will appeal to the masses. The should be in if they can come out with a few CD's that gain public appeal.

Isn't that what they tried to do with SFBM? It didn't work. Anyway who gives a shit if their music appeals to the masses or whether or not they end up in the Hall of Fame. I just want them to make the great music that I know they are capable of. Fuck public appeal.

Appeal matters because if they have it they are more likely to make more music for a much longer period of time. I would rather have Live playing new music for decades than have them make only one more CD because not enough people are buying their sound. Therefor, appeal is good. rockin.gif

You don't need to have mass public appeal in order to continue making music. You just need a good solid supportive fan base. I would much rather have Live go Indie and make the best music they can for however many more years that they feel they have good music left in them rather than have some record company telling them what kind of music they need to make in order to get a song on the radio.

I follow bands that have made as many records as Live have and they have never even been on a major record label or had a large amount of airplay. So the arguement that Live needs to be hugely popular in order to continue does not fly with me.
