Review by Daniel (OzLiveFan) of Newcastle, Australia
An excellent show. Heaps of energy form the band helped along by a very loud crowd. Train were an excellent support band and I will definately have to buy some of their music after tonights effort. At the end of the show two humorous things happened...Ed climbed up onto Chad Taylor's guitar amps and they nearly fell over, then after he climbed down he grabbed Taylor's guitar and then threw it back to him from the other side of the stage but Taylor dropped it and it broke. They both had a good laugh. Anyway, very tired, gotta sleep.

No surprises really, except i didnt expect the dance with you/white discussion encore no. 2. If they did Gas Hed it would have topped it off for me. Ed went pyscho during w.d. - he had a glass of red wine in his hand, stripped off his shirt, jumped on top of Taylor's amp stack, and then smashed Taylor's Fender strat.... wicked!! If I was Taylor I would have hit him for breaking my axe - but they were laughing about it!

Wow!! Is the only word to describe Live's Sydney Show last night. We entered the entertainment centre in time for Train, who did the best version of Whole lotta Love and Ramble on by Led Zepplin. A couple of very lucky but emotional girls were invited up on stage to dance with the lead singer.

Live, wow again! Ed, Chad G, Chad T, Patrick & Adam went off. I was lucky enough to be about 3 metres from the stage and the entertainment centre really rocked! They played a great mix of songs of their Birds of Pray Album and previous albums, Ed and Chad T really looked like they were having a great time up on stage and were really grateful to the crowd, who were so loud! There were times in some songs the crowd was singing louder than Ed. In the first Encore Ed dedicated Overcome to the victims of 9/11, the Bali Bombings and the Australian and American troops currently overseas in Iraq.

Once again, these guys rocked and even gained a new fan last night in my partner, who up until last night sort of liked them, but came out a fully fledged fan.

Going to recover now!

Oh my god. What a show. Train put on a good pre-show and despite the setlist not containing a couple of favourites like Shit Towne and Simple Creed, Live absolutely rocked. There did appear to be a couple of sound issues during a couple of songs, but all in all it was a fantastic show.

Like I do is one of the best concert openers I've ever heard. This song just pumps. All Over You got the crowd fired up, this is still one of their best songs live. Ed introduced Run Away as his favourite off the album. I'm still not convinced with Lakini's Juice - as with last time they toured Australia, it seems to be a bit flat though it does remain a bit of a crowd pleaser. Typical favs Run To The Water and Dolphins Cry had the crowd singing, as did Heaven.

For the encore Ed dedicated Overcome to the Bali bombing victims and to the troops still in Iraq. Obviously Lightning Crashes brought a big cheer from the crowd., but the pick of the night for me, apart from Like I Do, was White Discussion. About half way through the song, the band went into a bit of an improve, with Ed asking the crowd if his band was any good cause he had never seen them perform. He then tells Chad (Gracy) to 'turn it up', which he certainly did! I swear the volume increased by another 10 decibels. This was just the best way to finish the concert. Shame I don't have tickets to tonight's concert cause I could certainly go through that all again!

Review by Mike of New Zealand
There's only one word I can use to describe the gig last night: WOW!... This was my first Live concert and though I was primed to expect the best, nothing prepared me for the performance they put on: Live rocked the place silly, it was absolutely phenomenal!

This is long, so if you like build-up kind of reviews, hang tight... otherwise skip to the end!

I arrived at the Entertainment Centre with my brother around 7pm and bought a tour shirt, then hung round for a while, looking round at the ever-growing crowd, some veterans of the music scene, wearing Live shirts from as far back as Throwing Copper's tour, though there were far more V shirts.

They soon let us in and we got our seats (yes, seats) pretty far back, but a good vantage point nonetheless. The support support act Epicure came on and I must say, did a good job of entertaining, with laid back groovy verses building into an intense, rocking chorus. The singer introduced them, saying "hi, we wish we were Train, but we're not, we're Epicure." They got a luke-warm crowd response (there weren't that many around yet, but the standing area was starting to fill) and people were obviously shouting things to them, when the singer said, "what? You haven't heard of us? We play here all the time!" Good to see some Aussie humour and they got a good send off when they played their last song which rocked out hard and climaxed with the keyboard player sending his stool flying out behind him and raving on his feet.

A short break then followed, with fans streaming in to see Train when the lights dimmed... they came on with "calling all angels" which the crowd seemed to know, before getting into some funky pop/rock that had most people surprised I think - the general view here is that they are soft puffy rock, but they proved they had the goods, most evident when the singer said "this song is a big hit in America, so we're gonna pretend it's a big hit here," he got a few cheers, but then they hit us with an awesome guitar solo - the guy was really getting into it! Their energy was infectious on the crowd and when they launched into Led
Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" they really had the place rocking. Inevitably they ended on a high with "Drops of Jupiter" and left such a good vibe that I was left wondering, how much better than this can Live get?... I was soon to find out!

There was another break and the house lights came on, with people rushing out to the bathroom no doubt - by the time the lights darkened, the place was jam-packed (representative of the sold-out billing) and a HUGE roar went up from all of us - swirling lights, deafening sound and suddenly, Live is there playing Like I Do! Chad T and Adam looked pretty hip in sunglasses, with Chad's kicks punctuating the snappy playing; and Ed and Pat were there rockin' along too with Chad G... The Sanctity of Dreams followed and the crowd down front was really enjoying themselves. After each song, the lights would dim and then burst on with each intro - it was pretty cool having that suspense actually.

Live was really loud, but my ears got used to it quite quickly and They Stood Up For Love rocked much harder on concert than it does on TDTH... later on in Voodoo Lady Ed really got into his element, as his shirt came unbuttoned (that got a massive shriek from the ladies) and he paced the stage grinding his hips.

When the opening to All Over You came on though, I went nuts and the stadium just erupted! The whole crowd knew it and everyone was singing the whole thing, Ed looking quite pleased with the whole thing. As expected, the front crowd really got going in this song, the jumping was pretty cool to watch. When the bridge of the song came though, Live was rocking so hard it was awesome! I was thinking, "Metallica eat your hearts out, this is a real gig!" not that I've seen Metallica, but... anyway, back to the concert,

Ed then appeared with his acoustic guitar and started talking about the next song, when he said "this is a song off our first album," we all went ballistic - I think most people knew what it was, but he felt the need to explain that it was "Mental Jewelry, not Throwing Copper" probably after he was on radio earlier in the day on Triple M and the silly radio interviewer kept on saying how she only found out about MJ recently. Crazy.

They followed up The Beauty of Gray with Ed's favourite BOP songs (as we all know, "Run Away") and again, the crowd really liked it. "Sweet Release" was soon afterwards and got a big response cos it's pretty popular here in Oz - Ed looked like he was having problems with his earpiece in this, constantly adjusting it, but it sounded great!

Life Marches On came up and rocked out with it's happier riff, getting everyone into a pretty good mood - Ed's voice by now showed no signs of cracking, which was amazing, as he seemed to be working so hard and Live's songs aren't exactly easy to vocalize!

A cool drum intro then started which I tried to place for a moment, then realized with glee, along with the crowd, that it was "Lakiniís Juice" !! Chad T and Pat started their riffs and this song blew the top off the place, it rocked so hard. Gracey was slamming the drums like nothing else and Chad T was stomping and halfway through the song just went crazy, flinging himself around. Adam was getting into it, making some sounds into the mike, and jumping around and Ed - well, Ed - he was allover the place, he got up behing Gracey at one stage in the verse and was making some rather, er, suggestive poses with the microphone - Chad would have had no idea! Haha and I finally got to see the famous "jump" of ed and Chad T, stomping and hopping together. That was cool - as was the end of the song, when Gracey took it upon himself to go nuts on the drums: now THAT was something I'd been waiting for! He's a legend.

Run To The Water was another huge one with the crowd and again, in concert, Live live is really something special. Their range of talent is quite amazing too, with these soaring ballads and hard rockers all mixed together - it's the ultimate rock concert!

When Ed sang the first few words of "The Dolphin's Cry", the crowd exploded, it was a huge song here and everyone knew the words, singing all the way through. The cheers at the end of that one were huge!

Again, Live started a song with one of their cool intros and Ed was singing "looooove"... I guessed what it was, and when he counted in "I Alone" we went wild again, it's all all-time classic! They really rocked this one, and the Like A Stone part was more interesting than groovy but when Ed launched back into the song it kicked out something grand.

Ed then sang Heaven and the the audience loved it, it's also been a big hit here and we all sang along - he looked pretty happy with this as well. Heaven rocked in concert too, Ed's energy was rubbing off on everyone and the song reached a great ending.

Ed then thanked the crowd and the guys headed off stage, but I (after reading this site so much!) and most others guessed theyíd be back, especially without playing Lightning Crashes and the audience was deafening - sure enough, Ed walked back on with his acoustic guitar, talking again and in a really sincere tone he dedicated the song to everyone who suffered form September 11, the Bali bombings (there was big applause for this) and everyone in Iraq. He played "Overcome" and then the rest of the band came in and Ed got into "Selling the Drama" which again, everyone knew and loved well!

The next song really blew me away, "Lighthouse" is awesome on the album but live it just smoked the audience totally, everyone was up and jumping around for this one! Chad T and Ed were racing around the stage and even Pat was getting into the action, dancing around a bit nodding his head.

When Chad T started the chords to "Lightning Crashes" the place literally shook with the cheers, but before they started, Ed talked to us, thanking everyone and dedicating the song to all the children on earth being able to live happily with plenty of food. Then the whole crowd sang along and they really performed well on this one - I for one was really moved by the performance. When they finished, Ed thanked us all again and headed off and it was at this stage I was hoping fervently that they'd play us another encore and although some people headed straight for the door, most just remained and screamed for more... and sure enough, they came back on and we went crazy!

Ed came on and said "earth to light man, this is a quiet one, so can you turn this thing off my face a bit?!" and the lights went purple as they played "Dance With You". Again, it sounded great in concert and Ed tried to get the audience singing back the the chorus line, but it wasn't really that loud, Ed was trying coax more out of us (I was singing loudly!) but maybe most people weren't familiar with the song (how could you not be?!) or were losing their voices! Anyway, there was a brief pause and then they started grooving on the opening to White, Discussion and everyone went crazy, Ed was getting really pumped and the others started moving about more too. Ed moved off to the side at one point as the rest of the band played and started talking about them, how he wanted to just watch them for a while or something and then he started using the echo effects on the microphone to ad lib and it sounded terrific! The chorus came and the whole lot of us were screaming, with Ed just getting more and more pumped, taking off his shirt, kicking things around the stage and hollering at the top of his voice. There were some shots of Chad Gracey drumming up on the big screens and he was grinning, just hitting everything like a machine, it looked so cool!

Eventually they finished and Gracey and Taylor went nuts on the cymbals and distortion as Ed climbed up on the amplifiers and we all got up and had our hands in the air, pumping fists, it was great. Ed came down and he looked so intense that I though he was going to smash Chad's guitar, but instead just threw it to him, where he dropped it and they were laughing their heads off. Gracey came down andhad a handful of drum sticks that he threw out - what I would have given to be down there and gotten one! But Chad obviously couldn't throw quite as far as our seats... ah well, next time!!

Anway, overall it was one of the best nights out I've ever had and it absolutely rocked! Stunning performance on all accounts by Live and proves they're the best band in the world! Can't wait to see them again next time they're here!=) Maybe my ears will have stopped ringing by then! Cheers all!

Review by Kirsten Read-Andia (Stormchild) of Sydney, Australia
Ah!! Someone beat me to a review! Someone who doesn't sleep, obviously - or who didn't have to find their way out Sydney via public transport on a Sunday. Half-hour late buses, anybody??

Anyway - here goes. I swore I would post a review of last night's concert, and I'm going to try, the only problem being that the concert was so ABSOLUTELY BLOODY AMAZING that I'm going to have real trouble putting it into words. But I'll do my best.

Okay. The first act, Epicure, actually quite impressed me. They didn't really get a crowd reaction, but their songs actually sounded pretty good to me - some of it sounded very much like Powderfinger. We'll see if they get some more exposure from opening for Live - they deserve it.

Moving on - Train. I had no idea what to expect from these guys - I've always quite liked them, I have their first album, and let me say, after last night, I am definitely going out and buying their second cd. They were brilliant! Such great performers, knew exactly how to work the crowd, and the lead singer's voice (sorry, not sure of his name, but anyhow) was really, really strong. They did an absolutely amazing cover of a couple of Led Zeppelin's songs - A Whole Lotta Love was in there, and another one I recognised, but I don't know the name of - and it was so eerie, the singer's voice sounded just like Robert Plant's! And Drops of Jupiter was beautiful, of course. When their set was over, I mentioned to my friend, Alicia (who is now almost a complete Live convert) that I would've been happy just to pay to see Train. But then - what can I say? Live came on. And we quickly learned why Train, as good as they are, were only the opening act.

In short, they rocked. And that is the understatement of the century!! This was my third time seeing Live, and I thought nothing could match the first time I saw them, on TDTH tour - when I saw them on the V tour, they were brilliant, as well, but my first Live concert experience still topped it for me - but last night. Oh my God. Last night's show surpassed all my expectations. They were just frigging unbelievable. I'm glad someone else supplied the set list, because I just wouldn't have been able to keep track. With every single song, they blew me away - every time I thought, that's it, tonight can't get any better - IT DID!!! It was also extremely loud, and one of my ears is still ringing, but hell, who cares? Um, highlights for me (aside from everything) was Run to the Water, a song which always brings me to tears when I hear it live, but it was such an exhilarating rendition last night that I was grinning like a fool through the whole thing - Run Away was absolutely beautiful, I Alone was incredible, as was Dolphin's Cry, and Lightning Crashes, which Ed dedicated to the "noble ideal" (I think that's how he put it) that no child in the world should be starving or suffer, as always, was exquisite. The acoustic version of Overcome, which Ed dedicated to all the Bali bombing victims (so wonderful of him to do that) was just incredibly beautiful. Even my friend, who finds it really hard to listen to that song because it's too sad for her, was able to listen to it and love it for the first time.

But I've saved the best for last. I'm going to give you three song titles. Lakini's Juice, Lighthouse, and WHITE DISCUSSION. Those three songs were absolutely mindblowing. I thought I was going to explode when Lakini's Juice started playing, and when Ed and Chad T started stomping together - AAAAH!! And Lighthouse, which I didn't recognise at first, was just amazing - I've heard that Ed sometimes has had trouble singing that song, but my God, he didn't last night. It was phenomonal. And White Discussion. I simply have no words for that song. I've seen White Discussion performed once before, in the middle of the set, and it was good, but as a show closer - it was huge. Awesome. Overwhelming. I almost forgot to breathe. At one stage, I had to literally put my hands over my ears, it was just too much to take, and when it ended (and believe me, I didn't want it to end) I was deaf, had no voice left, and was utterly exhausted.

So that was the concert. I could rave on, and on, and on, and on about it - you get the picture - but I won't, cause my friend and I got to go backstage - and this is in danger of being a VERY long post as it is. I was so nervous about meeting the boys, because I am usually a very shy person - and I was afraid I was going to turn bright red, or make a fool out of myself or something. But the boys were all so sweet and down-to-earth that I wasn't at all nervous when I met them. Patrick came out first, and he was very quiet - I think he was very tired - shook everybody's hands, introduced himself by name (you know, just in case we didn't know who he was!) signed my backstage pass and disappeared very fast - I didn't even see him go. Then the other three guys came in - I didn't actually get to speak to Ed and Adam then and there, I couldn't get near them - but I did to speak to both Chads, got their autographs, and had photos taken with both of them. Chad T was so friendly! He came up to me and shook my hand, and asked me how I was - I said deaf, but brilliant - I had a photo taken, but we forgot to put the flash on, so he let me get another photo, this time, using the flash - accidentally spilt some of his drink on me (but most of landed on him) and was generally a really cool guy who I would have loved to have a conversation with. He also gave my friend a hug because it was her first Live concert. Chad G, meanwhile, was very quiet, but extremely sweet and courteous - he teased me because my camera is a dinosaur - my friend wanted a photo and an autograph from him, but couldn't ask for one, because she got struck with an instant crush, and couldn't speak! I didn't know until afterward, otherwise, I would've asked for her.

After the meet-and-greet, Alicia and I decided we wanted more of the Live boys, so we ran round the back of the venue, and waited for an hour or so in the freezing cold and got Ed's autograph (Adam never emerged, which is a pity, because I wanted to tell him how much I loved his music). Ed was also really sweet, I told him he put on an incredible show, and he smiled and thanked me (and I promptly felt my knees melt). But then he had to go, because Chad T was calling to him from the van ("Eeeed, I'm dying..." or something to that effect - I think he wanted beer) and we had to accept that our Live evening had come to a close.

So that's it. Sorry for the long post, and the rambling, but I've had no sleep and an hour-long phonecall in the middle of typing this. After last night, I am officially a hardcore Live fan for life!!!

Review by Daniel Bettiol of Australia
This was the 8th time I have seen Live since 1997. This was a truly great show with songs from MJ to BOP. They sounded great, the set list was tremendous and it was just a superb night.

Train was the lead up band but I didnít see much of them. Those who saw said they were good. I preferred a beer across the road and just caught Drops of Jupiter. That was enough for me.

Live came on at 940pm. The first track was Like I Do. A superb starter!! It sounded great and itís the perfect song from BOP to kick off a concert. The Sanctity of Dreams followed. It looks like Ed loves to sing this one. He delivers it with a great belief in the words he wrote. They Stood Up For Love set such a positive feeling in the place. All Over You was the best ive ever seen them perform the song. The crowd went crazy and got right into it. Voodoo Lady was next. Ed did his usual ëhow are the ladies, how are the fellasí bit before it. The crowd were very responsive. Voodoo Lady has that many great lines in it. Itís a great song! I was happy they played it again! The Beauty of Grey was played with Ed on acoustic guitar. Another one with fantastic lyrics. The more acoustic theme continued with Run Away which Ed said was his favourite off BOP. I think Sweet Release goes well in concert. Ive always liked the uplifting chorus and Edís voice, in particularly during the verses, sounded great.

Then the concert picked up in tempo. I really enjoyed the slower section and hearing a few of the newer songs live. Life Marches On is one of my favorites off BOP and was played out very well by the guys. Then Lakiniís Juice brought the house down. This is always amazing live and again they spanked it out. What a song and what a performance!! A little bit of a different start without Chad belting out the riff straight away. It was one of the many highlights on the night. The Dolphins Cry and Run to the Water, both crowd favourites, were delivered with the gusto and passion Live is famous for. I Alone never fails to deliver. Ed sang Audioslaveís ëLike a Stoneí after the second verse. One of the best songs thatís come out this year. They played Audioslaveís album before the concert whilst the roadies were doing there work. Obviously a recent Ed influence. Heaven was great in concert. The crowd loved it and it continued such wonderful momentum already built up. They earnt a little rest.

(Encore 1)

Ed came back alone and sang Overcome. Before the song he mentioned that we need to keep on helping each other cause ëthe world ainít getting any prettierí. He also dedicated the song to the Australians who were killed in the Bali bombing. The crowd appreciated this not only for the kind gesture but for the honesty in his voice. Overcome was brilliant with just Ed and acoustic guitar. Im glad a song from V was played. I know a lot of Live fans didnít overly rate V but I have always liked it a lot. Selling the Drama was next. This was followed by my personal highlight of the night. Lighthouse. A great song and played so well in concert. I was hoping they would play it and wasnít let down. Then Lightning Crashes. Ed spoke of seeing a recent TV show about kids in South Africa who were malnourished and didnít have the same opportunities as children in first world countries. He dedicated the song to all the children in the world so they have the same opportunities in life as others more fortunate. Lightning Crashes in a word was marvelous.

(Encore 2)

They all came out to the huuuuuge applause of the crowd. I wasnít sure what they would play. Ed started off by saying ëEarth to light guy, this is a slow and moody songí. The lights were turned down somewhat as they played Dance With You. I think this is one of Edís favourites. It was very nice. They finished with White, Discussion. A great finish from Live. Ed was fired right up and Chad was going berserk on the guitar. Ed was bumping into the
speakers before climbing on the speakers which were about 10 foot off the ground. He was shirtless by this time and having a great time. It was a great spectacle.

It was a fantastic concert. I thought the crowd was very responsive throughout the night. The company I was with loved it and the enthusiasm from the group we were around help made it a great night! Congratulations to Live for providing a superb show!
