PT-1 Like so many, I watched the first two episodes of ESPN’s Last Dance. This documentary brought back many great memories of that era, so I thought I’d share one of my own stories of MJ, Rodman and the Bulls. 👉 In 1996, LIVE outfitted our road crew with Carhart tour jackets. They had an embroidered LIVE logo with the crew member’s name on the front, and a large Throwing Copper typeset on the back.
👉Dennis Rodman, a longtime fan of the bands music was a frequent guest at our shows. We met at the 1995 MTV Music Awards as he was finishing a highly controversial year with the San Antonio Spurs franchise. Little did we know he’d soon be traded to the Chicago Bulls joining forces with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
👉After attending several LIVE shows, and even befriending my grandma, Rodman requested a LIVE crew jacket to cement his place backstage. This meant Carhart would have to cut a special fabric pattern - Rodman’s frame was bigger than their largest size. It took months to get made. 👉Once the band received the jacket, I jumped on a flight to Chicago to give it to Rodman at a Bulls home game. Afterward, I’d normally wait in the family room next to the team locker room. Once coach Jackson finished his summary talk, Rodman would grab me prior to his post-game workout (yes, he worked out for roughly 75-min after each home game). 👉The Bulls won the game, and coach Jackson must have skipped the team talk. Rodman walked me straight into the locker room, where most of the team was finishing getting dressed in their street clothes. There was a buzz in the air - this team was going to do special things. 👉Once inside the locker room, I said my hellos to coach Jackson and then went with Rodman to his locker. I had this massive box, and inside was the giant jacket, and Michael Jordan said, “what’s in the box?” I answered it was a gift from the band to Rodman. Jordan encouraged him to open the box, revealing this one-of-a-kind LIVE jacket. The entire team was impressed and offering their compliments to Rodman, even Jordan. 👉All was going well...continued in PT-2 next post.

PT-2...All was going well - until Jordan, intentionally speaking loud enough for the entire locker to hear his question, asked, “where’s mine?” The buzzing locker room suddenly felt quiet to me. I realized, I had entered the chamber of "the king" and didn’t bring him a gift! Jordan wanted me to know, this wasn’t Dennis Rodman’s locker room, it was his! 👉I stuttered a bit as I nervously offered, “after you come to a LIVE show, I’ll have one made for you too.” Jordan joyfully laughed and smiled broadly. He knew he was never coming to a LIVE show, and had already proven his point. 👉Rodman tried on his jacket and handed me a beer. I think I asked quietly, “does he really want a jacket?” Rodman just chuckled. Yes, MJ would even compete over a gift. 👉I’ve bumped into Jordan several times since our first interaction, and he has always treated me warmly. I think those teams were so important to him - and he remembers everything. It was clear to me that MJ really liked Rodman despite all the media BS. Behind closed doors Pippen, Jordan, Jackson and Rodman we’re brothers on a mission. Not unlike my own band of brothers in LIVE. 👉The Bulls won the first of three consecutive titles that year and Rodman was an ever present defensive and rebounding force. He is often overlooked next to the incredible presence of both Jordan and Pippen, but in the words of the late great Laker’s announcer Chick Hearn - said directly to me: “Dennis Rodman has a basketball IQ and instinct that is only matched by the likes of Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan. He is by far the greatest rebounder to ever play the game, with only Wilt Chamberlin as his peer”. I told Rodman about what Mr. Hearn said to me and he said, “imagine if I practiced”😮
