Chris messing up the lyrics again... it's gotten so bad recently. At the Anaheim show he either messed up lyrics on or missed his cue on several songs, even some of the songs from The Turn which he wrote. To see him miss lyrics on Lightning Crashes is very frustrating to witness.

There's potential. I liked the production and sound on this set. Chris is just a bit too amateurish, not working hard enough to make it sound right. I blame the guys as well for not getting him on track. Missing lyrics. Walks away from the microphone/ poor volume control.

Chad with his glasses indoors.....

That isn't 10% of the '95 MTV performance of lightning crashes which is I think the best ever performance Live put in (not that Ed could sound that good anymore though).

Let's compare.

Ed's performance in Australia was great. I don't expect him to sound like he did in 1994 because that's just not realistic.

I've never been able to view a Chris Shinn performance in entirety. I either have to turn it off or minimize it because it definitely is frustrating. The streak still stands-- I tried watching this one, but had to stop after 2:04 when he botched the lyrics. That's the worst I've seen of him so far. How pitifully embarrassing!! facepalm.gif I'm sorry, when you replace your lead singer, your replacement HAS to be better than the original or it will never work. They need to let Shinn go. I've seen better singers on those amateur/contest T.V. shows.

They need Ed back. Simple as that.

As most here concur, I want Ed back if he can once again be the punk rocker he once was. And I'm an optimist. I believe that Ed still exists!

He was trying to read the lyric-sheet at his feet...which confused him. facepalm.gif
The album bombed and this was truly embarrassing.

Maybe the time has come to patch things up with Ed, as they are becoming more of a novelty-act by the minute. It's annoying to see that they're almost ignoring the fact that the songs they're STILL playing, were written by the person that they are desperately trying to erase from the history books.
A re-recording of Mental Jewelry will probably be a new low for them.

Just drop that karaoke-singer, get your old friend back and write the most raw, gutsy, therapeutic album you ever made!

God what has this band become? :'(

I think Shinn's voice sounds beautiful. I really like it.

You can't ever replace the lead singer and have things the same. Just not going to happen. Even if Ed came back, how do you think that will sound? What kind of music do you think they'd write?

To everything there is a season. Ed season is over. Ed isn't even Ed anymore. None of us are who we were 20 years ago. Enjoy what we have for what it is.

I beg to differ. If your replacement singer is better (key word is better) than your original, it will work for the band. Yes it's been rare, but not impossible.

To everything there is a season? None of us who we were 20 years ago? I try applying that to the rock bands that I have seen lately... a decade or more older than Live and who are still just as bad ass as ever. To name a few, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, Tesla, Def Leppard, Van Halen... heck even thought I don't care for them, I'll even give Kiss their dues. Sure, lead singer's voices aren't as strong, members have gained weight, they don't move around as much on stage. But I have and will continue to enjoy every moment of what they do, they are still true to who they are, and it's never been an embarrassing shit-show.

Not that replacing the lead singer won't work, it's that it just won't be the same. Some bands and acts can maintain the quality of their performance over time, no doubt. But it just can't be the same as 20 years ago. Good, sure. But not quite the same. That's all.

I saw Billy Joel recently and loved every second of it. Just loved it. But is he as good a singer as he was 20 years ago? Definitely not.

What I've been hoping for lately, and finally, is not that Live would return to form and be magical again, but for me to take interest in another musical group the same way I did with Live 20 years ago. I kind of want to start the journey again. This time, hopefully, with a better ending.
