Secret Samadhi was released 18 years ago today. Holy fuck.

Hard to believe. I remember taking the plastic wrap off that CD and that new liner note smell like it was yesterday.

I got mine a week early from an unscrupulous local shop that used to sell them before the release date. I then went to work (on a day I wasn't scheduled) because my manager/best friend was a huge Live fan, and we listened to it straight through.

Got mine at midnight when it went on sale. Went home, listened to it twice and went to bed so I could get up for school the next day.

Still remember seeing the LJ video premier on MTV before the album came out and thinking - we'll the first song is awesome. Can't wait to hear the rest!

I was young and hardly understood the concept of albums, release dates, or singles at the time LJ debuted. I caught the LJ video debut on MTV and loved it. The song was so awesome and uniquely Live. I remember following the MTV top 20 countdowns each week, and LJ didn't get past #6, which blew my mind. And #1 was U2's discotheque which wasn't nearly as cool. I already thought Live was the best band in the world, but this video clinched it for life. When I got SS on the release date at the record store in the mall, and listened for the first time on the 3-disk Sony stereo at home, I was spacey listening to the first chords crash in Rattlesnake. By the end of the album, I was disappointed that it wasn't better than Throwing Copper, or that they hadn't made another Lightning Crashes. My expectations were so unreasonably high. But like every single Live album, I started out unsatisfied, and grew to like it much more.
