So, my girl and I have a pet iguana. She's had him for almost two years. She's been in the apartment we're in right now for the past year or so. He's been here with her the whole time. We recently got a leash for him so that we could take him on walks and stuff. We've done that a few times in recent weeks.

Today we got a letter saying that we're not allowed to have him and that we have to "remove the reptile from the household" by tomorrow. When she moved in, she put on the application that he was going to be here with her, and they didn't say shit about it. Now they're saying that that was an "oversight", and that we're in violation of our lease and can't have him. Well, we're sure as fuck not getting rid of him, so they said we have to find somewhere else to live within 30 days.

This fucking sucks, cause we're moving to california in about two months, and now we have to move out of here first. Moving sucks, I don't wanna have to do it twice.

We're probably just gonna go live with her mom so that we don't have to pay rent or anything.

I don't mind the rule, I just don't like that their "oversight" is making things difficult for us. A lot of my friends are saying we should sue them. Make them pay for every moving expense and the "emotional stress" caused by this situation. You can't accept someone into your apartment complex, and then tell them they have to leave because of your fucking oversight. Seems to me like they're the ones breaking the lease.

Can't you just hide the iguana and tell the landlord you gave him away to your parents? Hide him in the apartment, and if you wanna take him on walks, put him in a carry-on or put him in your car until you get far enough away from the neighborhood, and then take him on a walk through the park. I'm sure you could get away with it for the next 2 months. Either way, that pretty much sucks!

Landlords can be bastards - I'm lucky that mine is pretty good and he doesn't mind me having the 2 dogs even though he's shit scared of them. I'm sure that they are at fault but it's what to do about it without getting litigious.

If you're moving in a couple of months, will nobody look after him for you?

I don't want to sue these people, but I'm going to call some lawyers to get some info so I can at least threaten a lawsuit.

If they're willing to give you 30 days, but you need 60, then consider negotiating for the extra month. Maybe they would be willing to let you pay a pet fee of some kind for the extra time. Especially if you can demonstrate the animal has not caused any damage to the apartment since moving in. (My two cents)



If all else fails, throw a righteous tantrum. It works pretty well for me (most of the time).

Moving does suck, especially if you have to do it twice within 2 months. I'd go with the suggestion made above. You could try to negotiate amicably for the extra 30 days.

If they don't agree, hire me.

hell, it'd probably take 'em at least 2 months to evict you depending where you live. they have to file paperwork w/the courts & shit, then generally an eviction notice gives you at least a couple of weeks normally (again, depending where you live). they can't just throw you out, they have to evict you.

Exactly. It's been here with my girl for almost a year, without trouble. They, apparently, didn't even know we had it until they saw us taking it for a walk. This is why I don't mind them saying we need to get rid of it, but it's fucked up for them to only give us one goddamn day to do so. My girl has family and friends here, so if we do have to get rid of it today, we should be able to work something out, but what if they were to do the same thing to someone new to the area? They'd be fucked. That's what really gets to me and makes me want to file charges.

Man, you should seriously contact the clerk of the court in your county or your local sheriff's department to find out what laws govern evictions. i think you will find you have some time. i know what i am talking about on this one.
