Filter (currently touring with Live on the Summerland tour) are trying to raise $40,000 to help fund their world tour through the crowd-sourcing site Indiegogo

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/filter-world-tour

As well as the regular stuff like downloads, signed cds, limited edition apparel, here are some of the more interesting packages you can purchase:

$250 - Coffee with Richard Patrick - when Filter visit your city.
$450 - Skype session with the band
$750 - You create the setlist for a show in a pre-determined city

Pretty cool idea - particularly the fan chosen setlist!

I don't know. It seems kind of sad to me. This is an example where I think programs like kickstarter and indiegogo get abused. There are bands out there all over the world that just pick up and go, living out of vans and spreading their music, and they do it everyday without asking for $40,000 from their fans. Filter sold a few records. They should either be able to do this tour or not do it.

I don't have a problem with bands trying to raise funds in this manner. Maybe living out of a van in fine when you're starting out but there comes a time when that sort of lifestyle just doesn't cut it.

Filter sold 8,000 copies of their latest album in the first week of release. That's low even by today's standards. It's harder to get label support behind a band so if you need to fund your own tour then the costs can be quite high.

When I was listening to "Title of Record" in 1999, did I think I would ever have the opportunity to have a coffee with Richard Patrick? Hell no! Even 5 years ago, getting a response from a band member was a big thing. Nowadays the barrier between fans and musicians is getting ever smaller.

Don't you think it would be cool to be able to select a setlist for a band? music.gif

I think 8,000 is actually pretty decent for today's industry. It gets you a top 50 debut on Billboard.
