I read this and it saddens me. The use of speeding cars and chasing fires as vehicles of metaphors to tell us "sometimes people change"... Yes, things do change, it saddens me because Ed's lyric writing have changed. For me they have really deteriorated.. I read the above lyrics then compare them to something more meaningful and thought-provoking, deep and insightful off of Mental Jewelry like say:

So I said unto this man
"Who are you and where do you come from?"
And he proceeded to tell me many things
But I said nothing at all

For the flower in the corner, by the room,
In the window, and the sun
Said it all


These days he writes as if sitting across from you at a coffee table, or a wine bar, having a casual conversation. Or reading a children's book:

"Oh, how high we climb?" Falling out of the sky like a shooting star? This is what it's come down to for me. A man whose earlier works and lyric writing ability drew me to the band, deep lyrics, thought provoking.... and now we get the above. It's grade school material at best, I've read better haiku. "Do we fall?" Yes, if you're speaking lyrics, then it has fallen off quite a bit from the deep lyrics of MJ days. Falling like a shooting star.. burning in the night... if you want to use metaphors to drive across points.
