Speaking of candy and bears, is it true that in some camps in America you can't leave food out because Bears will come and get it? And since they're camps for kids and kids eat candy that candy ends up being one of the big things that attracts bears?

This thread is now the Bear thread.

It's not a wise idea to leave food out at any camp, anywhere in the US. It attracts not just bears, but other wildlife as well, racoons etc.
Bears are attracted to any food, if candy is out, there are probably other food items out as well.
Are you asking if they will just mosey on by unless it's candy? You're not, right?

No no, just that kids being kids are likely to have lots of candy and if its a kids camp, like a summer camp it's a likely food to be left out more so than other foods. I just remember hearing somewhere that candy was one of the most common things that brings bears out to camp sites, and so that was my theory on why. Drawing the parallel from candy to bears!

I remember at this camp somewhere in ... god where was it, Texas maybe, or New Mexico, there were heaps of raccoons hanging about outside our cabin. The girls were scared to go back to their cabin so we were trying to figure out a way to get them to go away because they were getting really brave and quite happy coming right up to the door. Then this complete moron had the bright idea that if he threw a whole bunch of fruit out that they would be content with it and go away. He just did it without saying what he was doing and opened the door and threw a whole pile out ... needless to say every fucking raccoon within about 10 miles descended upon the place.

Shame that root beer barrels are going to lose to reeses cups.

Ah, root beer barrels, they bring back memories. They were a penny each when I was a kid, as were many little candies like that. You could run to the store with a quarter and get a whole crap load of candy.
