The thing that separated LIVE from all the other rock & roll bands was their unique sound. I cannot tell you what exactly it was, but they definitely had it. With the last 2 alums it was lost. And it is not a matter of success.

Hunger. Energy. Earnestness. Authenticity. Spontaneity. Creativity. Unconventional song structures. The willingness to tweak the knobs on their amps & guitars to get different tones. The willingness to write songs that didn't quite follow a tried & true 4/4 formula.

Live's uniqueness at the time was subtle in detail, but obvious to anyone who spent any decent amount of time listening to them. It's why MJ, TC, and SS are widely considered to be the band's best work, both by hardcore/longtime fans, and by the general public (as they were the band's highest grossing albums). TDTH had some elements of that as well, but TDTH is also when things started going the conventional route and the essence of what made those first three albums so potent began to be stripped away by... go read Chad's blogs.

MJ did not gross higher than TDTH. For hardcore longtime fans and general public...I think it's really hard to say which album is considered within Live's top 3 albums between MJ, SS, and TDTH.
