Singapore and Manilla have a relatively large Christian base. It makes sense for Ed to travel and perform there in an attempt to broaden has small fan-base.

LIVE music gets played worldwide. Ed has visited many countries since he went solo that LIVE never toured as a band in and has drawn very well.

New interview:

https://www.notatourist.sg/blogs/live-light...ew-ed-kowalczyk

It happened late at night, when I saw the ad on, of all places, Facebook. Ed Kowalczyk. Coming down to Singapore. To play an acoustic gig. Took me just a few minutes to first get the tickets online, then call my editor up (more like nag her) for a possible interview.

I've been a big fan of LIVE since their Throwing Copper days (missed out on Mental Jewelry initially, but managed to discover it later). Growing up with the band's music, I was thoroughly sore when they broke up before getting a chance to watch them live. (LIVE live, that's a good one.)

So, finally, here's a chance to catch Ed live and also to interview him. For a kid growing up in a third-world country and getting blown away by his lyrics, this is just awesome. My dear editor managed to hook me up for an interview, here's what Ed has to say.

How did it all begin for you, musically?
I've always loved to sing! I started singing when I was 7 years old. I knew the Grease soundtrack by heart.

Who are your musical idols and inspirations, both past and current favourites?
I've always been, and still am, a diehard U2 fan. I love soulful rock music, Muse is a current favourite. Adele, though she isn't necessarily considered rock, is also magnificent.

I'm not going to ask what happened with LIVE, but can you tell us how it feels like to walk away?
I came to an “end of a chapter” moment in my life a few years ago and desperately needed a change. It felt amazing to step into a new phase. The fans can sense the new happiness and excitement in my songs and performances, and that’s the best part.

For Mental Jewelry, there was influence from Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti. Who else do you read? Do you have a favourite author or book? And do you get inspirations for songs from reading?
I've always been an avid reader and student of the world's great spiritual traditions. It's hard to say that any one particular book or writer inspired this or that lyric, but they all exert a subtle force on who I am and what I write about. The Bible remains the most mysterious and inspiring book in my life by far.

What is your favourite LIVE album and song, and why so?
I really love the The Distance To Here album. I felt like lyrically and melodically, I was doing some of my best work in the late 90's. The song The Distance is timeless for me, not only in what it says, but in the fact that the arrangement is so creative and can go in a million directions, even now. I love playing it acoustically, which I do in my show every night.

If you weren't doing music, what would you be doing?
Great question! I have absolutely no idea. I like photography and coffee. Maybe I would be taking pictures of espressos.

First time in Singapore. We've been waiting for you for almost two decades. What do you have in store for your fans here and what are you looking forward to on top of the gig?
My I Alone acoustic show is really powerful. I play all of the hits of my work in LIVE – Lightning Crashes, I Alone, The Dolphin's Cry, as well as some of my newer songs. The fans really love the acoustic show; it gets to all of the places it needs to, emotionally speaking. People sing along all night! I'm also looking forward to spending a day in Singapore and checking out what I hear is a beautiful city.

How is it coming along with the new album? Any particular direction the album is heading musically and lyrically? Might we be able to hear a new song or two during the gig?
The new music is coming along wonderfully. I'm working with Jamie Candiloro as producer. He's really amazing. He's a Beatles fanatic, so we're building some very interesting arrangements that are definitely different for me. It still has the intensity I'm known for, but with a new depth in the music. I will be playing at least one brand new song during the show.

You posted on your Facebook page – “I guess if you're gonna be in one movie, it may as well be a cult classic!” How was it like being in Fight Club, albeit just for a single, memorable scene? Would you ever join a Fight Club in real life?
It was a blast being in Fight Club! But in real life, I'm a lover, not a fighter. As far as people that I would like to fight, I would say that the best punch is always a smile. Anger is an end in itself.

How would you like to be remembered as an artist?
I would like to leave behind music that inspires people, period.

Has being a father changed life for you in every aspect (musically, spiritually, etc)?
Absolutely. The contentment and peace I receive as a father has profoundly changed me and my music.

If you're lucky enough to have your “famous last words” immortalized, what would they be?
“If you have truly loved, you have truly lived.”

From the interview, he does sound like he's in a stage of his life where he's completely content and happy. As a fan, it's great to see an artist like him to be in that state. I personally can't wait to watch him perform on stage and sing along to all the songs. It's going to be a great night of soulful music.

Ed plays his first-ever (and one-night-only) gig in Singapore on the 25th of April at TAB. Tickets are on sale now. To book tickets and for more information, head to TAB.

Singapore is a very popular place for Australians to visit. Also has a huge ex-pat community.

I'm sure he did his homework before deciding to play there.
