Something I have wondered, and I am sure it is true, I just did not know Live real well at the height of their popularity. What I think is the beauty of every new album is hearing how it surprises, disappoints, and excites fans. I am sure TC disappointed MJ fans, and SS freaked out TC fans, and so and so forth. I just assume these things to be true, but maybe someone who has been a Live fan longer than me could let me know. I just think it is a healthy sign for a band to be gaining and losing fans with each album, meeting and eluding people's expectations.

So yes my question again, did Live experience the same bashing they are experiencing now with SS and TDTH? I heard it all around V and BOP.

No, there was not too much controversary. Some people did not like Birds of Prey that much. I personally liked V, but yeah there was not the arguing that there is today. Probably because w/o a doubt M.J., T.C., S.S., T.D.T.H. were all awsome in their own right.

When SS came out, there was bashing too. "Puke stinks like beer??!! What kind of lyrics are that??!! Has Ed lost his mind??!!". "Except for LJ there are no rockers on this album!! Didn't Live used to be a Rockband??!!". "Eek!! Turn My Head is the luve song Ed would never write!!".

It's all history repeating.

I remember there was a bit of negativety towards TDTH from a couple of people. They didn't like the 'love' theme. Most seemed to be blown away by the album but
V had far and away the worst reviews, the boards became ugly around that time,Live-web closed because of it.
BOP was similar to SFBM I think in terms of negativity.

P.S Why did I have to register again?

I haven't been on the boards very long. I've been a fan from the very beginning, and have always appreciated that Live evolves. That said, I think SFBM is their weakest album, by far. I still like it okay. But if it was the first Live album I'd ever heard, I would not have been impressed at all.

I could not agree more. I was not a Live fan during 1994-95 so I do not know what happened.
But I participated in a forum at alternative.music.live.the.band. That happened some months before the release of V. At the time, I was a big fan of TDTH and when I argued that TDTH is Live’s second best, many fans that participated in this forum, most of them were TC-era fans, could not believe that somebody could say this. They considered TDTH very poppy, uninspired, the lyrics were not deep at all, the voice was high-pitched etc, that is, all the comments that have been heard for V, BoP and SFBM when compared to TDTH. The songs that received some value were: The dolphin’s cry, Run to the water and Meltdown.

Interestingly, when V came out some V-era fans appeared in this forum and the conversations were intense and sometimes funny.

From what I have heard, SS was a disappointment as well. It sold well not because it was received well but because it came right after TC, when Live was very popular (IMO). I dear to say that even if V followed TC it would sell millions.

you're certainly right.

I'm a fan since TC. I received SS as well. TDTH already was a minor disapointment to me, especially because of TSUFL and a minor loss of energy.

And then, V came out...

To me, things are very clear. I see every Live album separately and independently without comparing. I try to get what I enjoy from each one and I do not care whether TC, SS and TDTH are the standouts. I never liked V but thank god it was released and nowI really enjoy some songs such as Transmit your love, Overcome, Forever…, Deep enough, Flow. These songs are very different from what Live had produced earlier but I do not care, they sound fine to me. The same applied to BoP: as an album it falls behind TC, SS and TDTH but it has some excellent moments, Like I Do is one of Live’s best. And now another different album, SFBM: It falls behind as well but many thanks to Live that wrote Get ready, Show, WDWGFH?, Sofia and Nights of nights etc. They are great songs and I do not care if the album as a whole is weaker than some others.

I, myself, have noticed that everytime I listen to a new album of Live... it sounds a bit odd. With every album I bought (I started buying all of them a couple of years ago), I noticed that in the beginning I didn't like it that much. The appreciation of the songs always came a bit later.
So now, with SFBM (which I bought yesterday tongue.gif) it's exactly the same. I think it's a good album, but not as good as the previous ones. But I said the exact same thing about V, BOP, TC,... So I think it's just a matter of getting used to the new "style" once again smile.gif

Well, I can't understand that really. Although TSUFL may have been a bit poppish, it is one of the best songs Ed has ever written. There are many different aspects of TDTH to be diappointed about but TSUFL shouldn't be one of them.

Guess you're entitled to your opinion though, but then again, so is Charlie Manson.

I've been a fan from the very beginning, and my list of preferred Live albums is a bit different from the norm. I have bought each album on release date and treasured each one as though it was a new baby. Here is my ranking:

1 The Distance To Here

2 Mental Jewelry

3 V

4 Birds of Pray

5 Secret Samadhi

6 Throwing Copper

7 Songs From Black Mountain

Live need to have dark times to write weird/dark song like the ones on Secret Samadhi to be back in thye mainstream of Rock N' Roll. It's sad but this is what I think.

I agree. Each album has their own unique style and even though their last three albums haven't been my favorite, there have been a couple of my favorite Live songs on them.
SFBM: Get Ready, Show, WDWGFH? BOP: Like I Do, Lighthouse V:Overcome

Taking this a bit further, to me, there is no Live sound and no Live roots, it is only Live songs.

yep - its true: every album is unique. but to me, SFTBM is the weakest so far. I totally agree with grandpa grizz. the new album doesn´t touch my heart and soul. its an "ok-album" - avarage - nothing more nothing less - far from impressing me much. but anyways its good and i like most of the songs. but its no album to become a dedicated fan.

TDTH, SS and TC are overwhelming - with music that goes so deeeeep. maybe an artist must have "bad times" to write good poetry/good songs. maybe my expectations are much too high.

live is my favourite band, even with weaker albums.
