So, I was listening to Deep Enough...

(Yeah, you can probably see where this is headed.)

It was the live version, from the Rolling Rock Town Fair concert, where Ed introduces the song - "This song is called Deep Enough. It's for the ladies, 'Deep Enough,' you know what I mean?" That didn't help matters.

Like all songs on V, the chorus actually has a pretty nice melody. What a shame.

So what do you consider the worst lyrics Ed has ever written?

"Your skirt began to rise, and so did I,
and you know that I took that prize,
in the middle on the club..." etc. etc.

That pretty much sums it up for me.

I actually don't think those are so bad, it fits in context with that song.

Personally, the entire song "Home" makes me want to jump out the window. Leave the sappy propaganda lyrics to the country artists. Thanks.

I love the BOP song "What are We fighting For". I think 95 percent of the lyrics on the song are spot on and beautiful. But "the crucifex ain't no baseball bat"....cringe!

I chose that line because it represents how they have fallen. They used to have lines like "Free love is a knife through the jugular vein" and "Oh Hitler, in a robe of truth... my emptiness has built your altar" but now... It sounds like a line from the latests britney spears album.

In fact, lets see if that album has better lyrics?

cry.gif OKAY Nevermind... I have been to horrible places people. Spears definitely has worse lyrics. I'm sorry to Live for what I said and sorry to my eyes...

"Nipples to nipples
Body to body
We're sexing each other" ~Mmm Papi

I really enjoy Secret Samadhi, but some of those lyrics were pretty out there- some good some not so good in my opinion

I can get behind that, Showalittlelove. SS has some obstuse lyrics, especially Century.

Oh, oh, oh, scratch what I said earlier - I think this has got to be the lyric that made me cringe the most:

"She's just a goddess in a pair of Diesel jeans."

Also:

"Where the boys in Live? They pissing in the mainstream."

"Had to go to Jimmy Buffet with your dad/ with Live it's game seven every single night"

haha yep those V ones are also pretty bad .... but i forgot about that one from Radiant Sea, I think why I dislike it most is cos of the word "just" ... to me that's bad writing, if you're saying someone is "just a godess" then that really demeans the whole thing doesn't it? "Her? oh don't worry about her, she's just a goddess or something"

also any time Ed makes a similie ... "such and such is like such and such" , especially the last couple of albums, really reeks of poor writing and a lack of creativity.

I thought all those lines were good especially in the context they were delivered. He uses language like that in Century to make a point about the state of the followers of the world. They are primal drunkards who believe anything. Existentialist made a fantastic defense of it some time ago on this board, it is a deep song and for those of you that don't care for how deep it is, it rocks too towards the end!

I can't really defend insomnia other than it reminds me of "I am the Walrus"

I know a lot of the stuff on Secret Samadhi had a lot of deep undertones and symbolism woven into the lyrics which should not all be taken at face value but rather in the context of the whole, so I can agree with you there but sometimes that doesn't translate into the best lyrics from simply put a listening perspective. No matter how deep the meaning I have to skip the song before I hear Ed sing "I can smell your armpits". That being said I love the writing style on Secret Samadhi, but some of the lyrics from a literal sense make it impossible for me to embrace the album as a whole, or maybe it's just way over my head! eh.gif

Think my all-time cringe-worthy Live lyric is 'doing their time like carps in the slime'...total shit.

'think of gentle jesus' is awful too. Sounds like something you'd hear in sunday school. not that i go or anything... whistle.gif

I like Deep Enough but V itself is full of trash lyrics. OK? probably has the worst of them but I also hate the one from People Like You about being on a stage with Bono and Elton john etc. I think it was the first reference to pop culture I'd ever experienced when listening to a Live track, and I just don't like it.

In terms of great lyrics, I think TDTH is a masterpiece.

I'd be interested to hear Ex's theories on Century, never really figured that song out. Maybe this banana.gif will tempt him in!

-D

I really like the song Sofia, but the lyric "like a junkie needs a vein" really bothers me. An otherwise good song (especially live), but that lyric just kills me.

I can't stand the lyrics to "The Sanctity of Dreams" either. That whole song sounds like a bad Avril Lavigne b-side.
