Why are they playing Lightning Crashes when they have a brand new single???

Didn't they play that on Leno when Awake came out???

I think it will be a reasonable performance but I would have preferred to see Forever.

What else are they supposed to play? No one else, besides us, wants to hear a song they've never heard ("Forever") and will never hear again. I know it's their current single, but it was only played in 2 or 3 cities, and on light rotation. Lightning Crashes makes sense.. everyone knows that song, they'll put the song and band name together, and they'll hear that Live just released a live live cd and dvd.. with Lightning Crashes on it. More people will buy it that way.

No matter what show they're on, it's good to see Live on tv, since it's such a rare occasion.

Promoting a single that was released in November and is not in rotation on most stations wouldn't make much sense. Not only that, but Forever isn't even on the DVD. Lightning Crashes is the best promotional tool for the CD/DVD and upcoming show dates.

When album #8 comes out, playing a new single on Ellen would be a good plan.

As some has mentioned earlier in this topic: the last time they were on Ellen they did LC as well lol.gif and maybe they performed that song another time earlier on there. But LATP is kinda of a live version of their greatest hits, so I can understand why they choose (again) to play this song. I would prefer Forever more though, cuz apart from the solo version of Ed, we still haven't seen this song performed in live version eh.gif ...

Btw the last time on Ellen, they played Mystery as well, so I don't really agree with someone saying it makes no sense to play a new single of Live. I mean, Mystery wasn't even a proper single, but was still played smile.gif

LC at Ellen in 2006 was pretty good btw! I have that video. Too bad the show cut a major part out of the recording.

Wouldn't make sense? What makes more sense, promoting a CD/DVD that has been out since November or an album that has been out for 15 years that if you are tuning in to see 'Live' you are most likely familiar with or have that album.
You people don't get it ... fuck what people want to hear ... the fact that everyone knows the song is the point, why not give them something new? Once upon a time no one knew Lightning Crashes, would you have prefered them to just continue playing Operation Spirit on every show they go on?
God the fact they're turning into a nostalgia band is just sad. Yes I'm all for playing as much of their back catelog at gigs as possible, but use precious/rare TV time to promote what you have now, not what you were doing on TV 15 years ago.

Man, I'm through with this band. This decade for them has been nothing but a joke for me.

Ellen. Again. Catering to housewives and the easy-listeners. Awful. Thanks for the 90s, Live.

You're through with this band because you happened to find out they were performing one of their biggest hits on Ellen? I hope you're joking, man. If you hadn't come here.. and had missed the announcement.. you'd still be a fan?

Ellen is one of their biggest fans. She presumably watched the dvd and loved it. Her favorite performance was probably LC (same as mine), and so she invited the band to perform that song on her show, one of the highest rated shows on tv.

Should Ed had dissed her and said 'no'? Some of you guys are nuts!

I doubt they're going to play Lightning Crashes. They already played it last time they were on that show. As far as why they played it on Ellen and on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno during the Awake era, was that they had never played Lightning Crashes on a major US TV show before (Unplugged excluded). So it was a good way to hype the "Best of..." thing. They're going to play Forever or Purifier with a "classic" at the outro (during the credits).

Very well said! CD/DVD's don't usually come with a ton of promotion, and Ellen as a fan of the band invited them on the show. They'd be crazy to turn it down.

Also Mystery was a proper single from SFBM. Lightning Crashes is part of the CD/DVD and there is nothing wrong with playing it on a television show. I believe it has only been played twice before on national television, the second time being a very shortened version of the song as the end credits played over Ellen.
