Perhaps what is most notable about Live's brand new CD/DVD, Live at the Paradiso - Amsterdam, released earlier this month, are the two brand new songs that lead singer Ed Kowalczyk says are representative of what the band's next album will sound like.

"[Those two songs] really point to where I feel the band wants to go, [and] where I am coming from lyrically," Kowalczyk told Alternative Addiction in a recent interview. "It's just a good direction point of where we are headed sonically, production wise, everything. It's sort of the re-ignition of the band on certain levels."

The two songs, titled 'Forever' and 'Purifier', were finished at the eleventh hour by the band in the studio, just before the album was to be completed. With a sense of urgency due to the deadline they faced, Kowalczyk says the songs have a unique energy to them. "Both songs kind of have this urgency about them, where we almost missed our deadlines. You can feel the urgency and the energy of the session in the songs," said Kowalczyk. " 'Purifier' was actually written in the studio, like literally in my hotel room the night before, and then we tracked it the next morning."

The new songs were released as bonus tracks on a live album that the band recorded in Amsterdam earlier this summer. Kowalczyk said he knew that the location was perfect for a live recording."We've been talking about it for a long time," said Kowalczyk. "It seemed like for us, our Dutch fans are really into our music, and the venue is really cool, we just knew it was going to add up to a great night."

In fact, it added up to such a great night that the band had a hard time figuring out what parts of their two and a half hour set they should cut out for the recording. "It was hard. We had to cut the encore way back and inevitably eliminate somebody's favorite song," explained Kowalczyk. "It was just part of the process, but I think we did a pretty good job."

The album was released on Vanguard Records, Live's first recording on the independent record label. After releasing their last six studio albums on majors, Kowalczyk said that it felt refreshing to be back with an indie label. "It feels more like when we first started on Radioactive," said Kowalczyk. "It just has a real indie feel to it and I love that."

The label the band is working with may not be the only way that the band has come full circle. Kowalczyk says that they may be returning to the more aggressive style that broke them into the spotlight in the mid-90s.

"When I listen to Throwing Copper and play the songs, I still feel the same passion. I think what's changed is not so much the passion, but the angst aspect of the songs," says Kowalczyk of the band's early sound. "On 'Purifier' I think I have found subject matter that I want to sing really aggressively about again, but with an angst that's driven towards finding spiritual truth. It's interesting how the band has sort of mellowed over the years and now exploded again with a song like 'Purifier'."

The result creates high anticipation for Live's next release, which Kowalczyk says they hope to have out in the summer of 2009. In addition to a new release, Live has a spring tour planned in Australia and a summer tour in the US expected to be announced next year.

sounds guuuuudd thumbsup.gif I feel something good coming up.
I know we must be carefull what Ed says about how future stuff will sound (BoP--> "Live is going back to their roots", SFBM--> "An exciting, totally different new direction for the ban" and "quite simular to our first record"). But this time I felt that Ed knew more what he was talking about I guess. He distinguishes sounding agressive, and angst.
There isn't recorded anything yet, so let's wait, but I can see this becoming a quite setisfying album.

If you go to AlternativeAddiction.com you can actually listen to the best interview by Ed in quite some time. It totaled in at 18 minutes and was really informative. While you're there make sure to vote for Forever.

While this is positive news ... I find it weird how Ed will talk about writing purifier in a hotel room the day before recording it but won't mention it's obvious origins as stemming from their cover of God Don't Never Change.
Also whilst I agree Purifier is a sound I would much, MUCH rather hear them continue with than SFBM, i'd hardly call it aggressive or angsty in any way shape or form, it has energy and power but not angst.

Yeah, you'd think that after all the furore over Chris Daughtry not giving credit to Live's version of 'I Walk the Line' that Ed would give full disclosure over the obvious link to 'God Don't Never Change'. Then again, maybe Ed did mention it and Alternative Addiction didn't include it in the interview. tongue2.gif lol.gif

Thats possible .. but I don't think its got to do with ripping off GDNC, cos Live's version musically to me doesn't really sound anything like the original ... but more so just explaining the true origins of how it came together.

Yeah, it would've been nice to hear all of that.

As in how they got from GNDC to Purifier - don't thimk we will though somehow.

By the way that phone interview is great - very in depth. nod.gif

I heard Ed saying somewhere in the interview, that the 2 new songs came were created with different parts that were made on different times.
(But after that, he says Purifier was created in the studio, and after that, the night before).

he said he had some parts of forever made well before the recording session - and it was completed there or just before.

Lyrically 'purifier' was very late but maybe the idea which obviously came from GDNC happened and stopped them playing it at shows???

cuz they only played it like twice and it was good. they must have realised that if they wanted to originalize it they couldn't keep the cover going.

Or I'm rambling - been a long weekend....

what he said bout TC and finding a way to be aggresive again was interesting - but how can one struggle with being aggressive???? lol.gif

Here's hoping they rework Purifier, with the extra time they should have. I really like it, but it's way too heavy with the vocal overdubs.

I really hope the band is together when they start writing stuff for the new album. I hope Ed doesn't begin writing during the holidays when he's off alone doing his solo performances. The band was together all last year, touring and traveling overseas, and what came out of it: the 2 best studio tracks we've heard in a long time. I have a feeling though, that Ed will begin writing now.. when he's finally alone.

Since the release of SFBM, Ed stated on several moments he was writing new material, to be recorded in the near future. He said so for example at the last show of 2006, in the spring of 2007 and I think also in 2008. I would asume that there must be many songs ready by now. Fact is, that the first 2 songs they recorded since than (since the SFBM release) were written the day before the recording of them. So what happened to all the other written songs?
Hope they start writing all over again, all new fresh songs, TOGETHER somewhere early 2009.
