his voice sounds like shit. no offense. it occasionally is reminiscent off ed's old voice, but mostly sounds washed out and fucked up. for the new album, should ed use autotune to make it sound better?

Can you post an example of what this device does to a voice? I've never heard of it. I do know Ed needs to stop singing like his balls are in a vice

By the way, I think this forum is broken. I posted a response and then looked at the views this thread had and look what I saw

Weird...

What are you specifically referring to (song, album, performance, ect..) in order to come to this conclusion?

Hate to break it to ya, but I'd be very, very surprised if the band hasn't been using auto tune for years. It is extremely common and is an accepted part of modern music production. It doesn't effect the sound (or tone) of the voice at all, just the notes being sung. I have even played a few regional (500 capacity) venues who have auto tune built into the soundboard for all acts, local and up.

I'd guess that, if they didn't use it in Forever, it's part of the reason that people actually LIKE the vocals in the song. These kind of things have an effect on listening to the song that people don't usually recognize.

That said, I'd wager that it was used at least a little on the song. In the studio I don't think it's common to auto tune an entire track, unless it's someone who just can't sing at all. Auto tuning an entire track makes it sound unnatural, which as bad as it may be SFBM didn't have really unnatural vocals. Just annoyingly high vocals and bad melodies! smile.gif

I do not think they are using it.

Liam Gallagher does, unfortunately.

People who use autotune have no talent.

Ed has talent.

He doesn't need to use autotune ever, and never should.

There is nothing wrong with Ed's voice. Listen carefully.

He's still got it.

did ed really ever have a great voice? maybe autotune is important for the pop scene, so i say use the thing if you have to.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if he were using it these days, but it would if he were using it back in the MJ/TC/SS days, and again thats what I like the rawness of his voice and the "in the moment" I guess, rather than trying to gloss everything over and make it sound perfect. It's simple to me, Ed is trying to sing way beyond his limits, it shows gig after gig when he fails to reach high notes and his voice cracks. Yet when he stays lower and doesn't try to push it he can deliver some incredible vocals. The fact that he needs an autotune is kinda sad because he doesn't need it, not if he sings within his limits anyways smile.gif

His vocals are clearly tuned on all the recent studio recordings. The software has gotten so good now that you probably wouldn't notice as much. The norm is to tune vocal in studio to help with mixing and mastering as it makes for a clearer, more polished product.

Everything these days is tuned, edited, and tuned again. It's the way of the music biz.

Where could you purchase auto tune? I'd love to see how it works.

It's either built in or a plug in for Pro Tools. Pro Tools, just in case, is a music recording program with a shit ton of features. Allowing you to record, mix, autotune, add reverb, etc. etc. to your recorded tracks. It's essentially a music studio running through your comp.

In Pro Tools you can isolate a track and use auto tune to retune it. Notes that are out of tune technically produce bad frequencies, which makes the over all product sound worse. Word is they are developing, or have finished developing, a plug in to change guitar chords after they are recorded. Crazy but true.. Basically, if you record a waveform you can use Pro Tools to manipulate it in all kinds of crazy ways.

There are different degrees of this though, so don't get me wrong. Some artists are ALL auto tune all the time; in the studio, live, etc. etc.. The case with Live and a lot of music is perfecting the note, or just smoothing out rough spots. A similar thing likely takes place in editing drums, bass, etc. to get a crisp and perfect final product.

Auto tune for shows is a little different, and pretty damn common too. Like I said above, even smaller venues will sometimes have it built into their soundboard and microphone. If you can't sing a note to save your life it won't save you, but it helps provide a better product.

Sorry for the horrendous explanation, probably should have waited for more sleep! Hope it helps though.
