What I mean is the main purportrator is from 'Heaven'

"I sit with them all night
everything they say is right
but in the morning they were wrong"

Now wheather it's my feeble brain or not, I don't know but what in the hell is this supposed to mean?
In the context of the song, "them" you'd imagine would probably be his family (his wife and daughter ... seeing as only one was born at the time).
What in the world are they right about and then what happens between the time Ed went to sleep and Ed waking up that makes them wrong?
Or is it even his family he's sitting with, and if not who is it?
It just seems like a really odd thing to say in the middle of this song. I could probably come up with many sollutions as to what this means but they're all so round-a-bout and far fetched that it would make this a really, really vauge statement in a song that is otherwise really straight forward, hence it would be really out of place .. I dunno.

Also from 'Sanctity of Dreams'

"I was seventeen"

Again, so out of left field that seems to have nothing to do with anything .. I mean, so was everyone who has been 18 years old so .. what gives?

The way I've always interpreted that is that he's talking about other people - not his family - but the ones who always told him what to do, where to believe in, who gave him advice. But after thinking it through or after living it all himself ("in the morning"), he sees it's not all true or all that simple.
That's just my interpretation, though... smile.gif

That just rimed with "dream"! tongue.gif

If he's talking to other people that aren't his family and he's telling them that in the morning they were wrong "wrong" then isn't that just as bad as them telling him he might be wrong for thinking his daughter is Heaven? Y'know like, Ed is all into the "believe whatever you want to believe" seeing as he seems to think every religion is somehow true then it doesn't seem to fit in with him saying someone is wrong for their belief not being the same as him *shrugs*

And it kinda rhymes with dream yeah.. but it still doesn't explain why it has any relevence or how it fits in with the song.

Well the song is referencing dreams and fantasies and call me crazy but his mind was probably alive when he was 17, that afterall was the time they were writing Mental Jewelry. When you are 17 you think all of your dreams and desires can become a reality so they hold alot of meaning.

Still seems a little out of left field .. like "I was seventeen" you're kinda sitting there thinking "yeah you were seventeen ... and?" he just goes on with something else. I always wondered maybe it if was some in-joke or reference to something or other kinda like the story behind the "I saw that" in The Distance.

I'm not looking for things to nit pick with these either .. they're just two that always stick out at me whenever I hear these songs.

You are taking these lyrics too literally.

Well .. what else do they mean? I know they are silly throw away lyrics and there are plenty of lyrics out there that don't make sense or don't fit in .. but these were two that just always seemed to stick right out to me .. you know like when someone brings something to your attention and then you can't help but notice it every single time .. like the arrow in the fed-ex logo or something.

How do I nicely put "Ed's lyrics just arent what they used to be"

I guess I dont. Sorry. blush.gif

But then, I loved lines like "crazy lady won't you put some bagels in my oven"
And they never made any sense. They were just cool as shit!

I sit with them all night
Everything they say is right
But in the mornin they were wrong.

The song is about faith and with faith comes the expectation that proof is not needed to confirm your beliefs. I have had many an alcohol fueled discussion with friends way into the night about religion and the bible and the merit of it all. I was raised catholic and as a youngster obviousley believed in everything i was taught. I think what ed is saying here is; I will sit with "them" all night, and everything they say to me is right, all the evidence that would seem to proove that there is no god, or heaven, seems right. I am convinced. But I wake in the morning, see the sunset, and suddenly all the stuff that seemed like 'proof' is just wrong. My faith is still there. Thats my interpretation and i actually think its a nice lyric, albeit simple.

Pick up a pen and fight a war for the right to dream
I was seventeen

I remember reading about an experience ed had when he was seventeen. He went to see a U2 concert and realised at that moment he wanted to be like bono and change the world.......even though he would claim later he felt that way at 13. But he said something profound came over him at that U2 concert. So, he picked up a pen and fought a war.......again my interpretation

never took those lyrics as literally as some of you do....

I agree on the "lady, don't you put some bagels in the oven"..I love it

Maybe that's what I like about most of Eds earlier lyrics, they dont make any sense... HAHA

I remember discussing these exact lines with my ex-girlfriend a couple of years back and we came to the conclusion he might of been talking about his wife and unborn child at the time, something about her almost losing the baby, I know there is something else to back that up i just cant think of what it was.

HAHA..yup, always open to intepretation

if he wrote a lyric "I saw a tree" there will always be people that are able to give a deep philisophical meaning to it.... and others will just imagine him seeing a tree.

I don't really think there are deep philosophical meanings behind the 2 examples I gae anyways .. more so I just thin they have a very weird placing in the songs and don't seem to flow or connect with the rest of the song.
