I bought Secret Samadhi today Options

I doubt it. And I'm thinking the people that don't own them all wouldn't post about it.

I only own Four Songs, V, Birds of Pray, and now Secret Samadhi. I also have a non-functioning Mental Jewelry that was given to me a long time ago. I never bought SFBM because, well, it sucks, and I never bought Throwing Copper and The Distance to Here because I got so used to the ripped versions. Why would I buy a CD if I already have the songs? To support the band? I already support them. I've spent hundreds to see them in concert, and I have gotten many of my friends interested in them. It's not like I have gotten anything back from them. Live doesn't really have close relationships with their fans anymore (you never see the guys posting on here, for instance), and none of the shows I have been to were particularly amazing. I love most of Live's music, but I really feel that throwing money at them isn't going to do anything good for me.

In return for paying for Throwing Copper, you get....Throwing Copper. I know you already have it, but the point of paying for a CD doesn't have to be this vague notion of supporting the band. You pay for the CD for the right to own and listen to the songs.

If you listen to and enjoy a record, you should pay the band what they are charging for you to have this privilege. Now, most of the money may go to "evil suits," but that's an entirely different discussion.

A band shouldn't have to post on a FAN message board for you to justify not stealing.

I have to agree with Patrick. I'm a little shocked by how many people these days think it's okay to steal music. Music is a product, just the same as a chocolate bar or a coke. Stop making exuses as to why it's okay, and open your wallet. If you don't like it enough to pay for it, you don't have the right to own it.

Just to let all of you know: I didn't "steal" the songs. I ripped them off of the actual CDs using legal software that came with the purchase of my computer. The only album that I "stole" was Songs from Black Mountain, and I KNOW that many of you stole it as well when the songs were leaked.

Sorry... I know I sound like an uber-capitalist when I say what I said above, but I know a lot of people who are active performers in the industry and the illegal downloading that is so widely-accepted in society is really hurting the industry as a whole, and the livelihood of the performers in it. Anyone who knows how the system actually works these days with sales, advances from record labels and the effect that declining business can have on a band's success with those labels, knows what can happen to a band whose sales drop-off.

I don't know where this notion that music is 'for the people' got so out of hand. If you can't afford diamonds, a steak, or a new CD, they should all be equally wrong to steal. This is clearly not the case.

Music isn't free. It's a very simple thing to understand.

If you want to download music, use iTunes or some other legal download sites and pay for it. Because music is so personal and emotive, and because you hear it literally EVERYWHERE you go in society these days, people seem to think that it is a universal, free, thing. People in the industry who are middle-class bands (some would argue that Live are one of these bands) NEED you to buy their music to reach a statistical ground where their contracts with their record labels are viable. When you are a fan of a band, and steal their music, you're biting the hand that feeds you. They may not stick around long enough in the industry for you to get another album to rip-off.

Well-said. But also keep in mind that bands don't just make money from selling albums. It would be very difficult to "steal" a T-shirt, concert ticket, etc. I would also argue that Live has had plenty of success with their music. I would imagine they have reached that statistical ground. Anyways, good post.

I couldn't agree more. In fact, most of a band's income will come from touring and merchandise sales. However, the main promotional and distributing factor in a band's success is driven from the label. The label won't be happy with the artist unless album sales are good, and therefore won't back a band whose album isn't selling. Just look at what happened to Live's relationship with Epic when SFBM didn't sell as well as they had expected. Keep the label happy, and the machine runs smoothly. If labels are unhappy, that's when the wheels get squeeky and a band's life becomes difficult. Right or wrong, that is the way the industry is set up and it won't change unless labels release their death grip on intellectual property rights of artists.

I have every CD except for SFBM. I do have a burned copy of that, but I couldn't bring myself to buy it b/c i think it pretty much sucks. But I also own 10 Imported CDs, a ton of FOL gifts, Four Songs, 2 interview cds, and almost every compliation CD that Live ever appeared on, like Sun Records and Sweet Relief. Including that song "Walk Into this Room" Ed did with Nenah Cherry... on cassette

I have everything from Four Songs through Songs from Black Mountain, the 2001 through 2006 Holiday Gifts and the 1999 Holiday Gift vinyl. My copy of Awake is signed by everyone but Pat. And I have two of Adam's CD's, too, including a copy of The Dream EP autographed to me.

I have every single one of them also and I love them all. The only copies I have are concert recordings that people have given to me and my copy of DOAD, but I would buy that in a heartbeat if I could get my hands on one.

I bought SFBM and V and never regret either of them. I hate how we have to bootleg DOAD and all the other good non album tracks but I'd buy em if I could. I full on agree that a true "Fan of Live" will buy every album no matter how much it supposedly sucks.
