Wow, there it is. The holy grail for Live fans. I already have a DOAD cassette insert in mint condition, but the actual cassette...wow. Should I bid or should I not?

You see this is bullshit!. A tape a shitty little tape should not cost US $127.50 Just because its +LIVES+ first recording does'nt make it Okay for people to profit from others cause they went to a small gig once and in a drunkun stuppa coughed up $10 bucks to buy it and then through it in a draw and forgot about it.

This is why I think +LIVE+ should re-issue it so that these people can only get a third of what their asking.

Up past $150, and still over two days to go...

That's already more than I'm willing to pay. My guess is that it goes over $300. There's probably a handful of hardcore fans out there who have been waiting for one of these to go up on eBay, and will bid against each other incessantly with a "I might never get the chance again" attitude.

By the way, if any one out there has a copy of DOAD and wants to sell it for face value, please send me a PM. lol.gif

I don't agree at all. DOAD is a true collector's item -- a very limited, extremely rare, and highly sought-after work of art that marks the beginning of Live's existence. It's like an antique; there's nothing wrong with buying something old and rare for a lot of money, because its limited availability and "cool" factor makes it worth whatever cash is spent.

As far as what this person is "asking" for the cassette, that is completely dictated by supply and demand. He started the auction for something very low (less than $10, if I remember correctly), and it is the DEMAND for the item that has driven the price up. Simply put, it is the interest of the bidders that has driven the price up, not anything that the owner of the tape did or is demanding. Also, it's not like he went out and got the tape so that he could turn it over for a profit -- he obviously got the tape a long time ago, has been holding onto it unknowingly for over a decade, and finally realized that it is worth something (he states this himself in one of the questions posted on the auction page). I don't see anything immoral about that at all.

Finally, re-releasing DOAD would do very little, if anything, to drive down the price of an original DOAD cassette. Hell, the tracks on DOAD are out there and are relatively easy to get (either by download or on an unofficial bootleg), so it's not like people are bidding on the original DOAD because they have never heard the Public Affection songs before. Plus, it's not as though the band would re-release it on cassette, so the re-released product wouldn't even look the same as the original. As I said before, the reason why people want this is because it's rare, cool, and highly coveted, not because of what's on the tape itself.

I think you have your panties in a wad unnecessarily.

Maybe they could release a different version, possibly on CD, for the fans who just want to hear the music. Then the value of the cassette tape would still hold. It would still be a collector's item. And, the fans can have non-bootlegged copies of the music on DOAD.

I agree, it would be cool to have a cleaned up version of DOAD on an official CD. Unfortunately, the market is completely lacking interest for Live right now, so there's no way that this would happen as a normal release. Maybe as a special offer sold through the Fan Club or something...although SOY is pretty weak, so I doubt that it could be pulled off. sad.gif

Maybe I shouldn't share this but I paid $1200 on ebay for my still factory sealed copy of DOAD in 2000. The band has all signed the plastic wrapper. It is one of the few that remain unopened, Chad Taylor told me that himself. So though it was a shit load of money, it was worth it to me-a huge fan. And it is kept in a fire proof safe.

It seems to me that someone on this site just hyped up DOAD (which isn't that good by the way) and now has placed it on EBAY. Looks like they're just fishing right now on this fan site.

They'll probably get a sucker to bite too.

My suggestion, don't buy it!!! no.gif

i once got into a bididng war on a rare CD on eBay...wound up paying $116.00 for it, which is admittedly a lot, but I had been scouring both stores and the net for it for about 5 years before it popped up on eBay, so when I saw it my logic was that I could not let the opportunity pass.

the following week, another copy popped up and sold for $30. But mine was autographed, and I didn't have the ability to predict the future.

bottom line is, if its worth that much to you, then its worth it. I will not be bidding on DOAD, I already have the songs and physically having the cassette (especially since I no longer own a cassette player) doesn't do anything for me.

But I can understand how it would for some.

This has probably been asked before, but does anyone know of a copy of this cassete that is unopened? That would be quite a collector's item.

there is one referred to in this post. Of course, anyone with an opened copy and access to a shrink wrapper would simulate it anyway. I bet there are not many unopened copies, because when purchased they were not a collector's item. I can't tell you how many times i bought a local band's demo tape at a show. Hell, I even sold them of my own band. If I were famous, they'd be a hot collector's item.
