LIVE rocks packed Velodrome

By Alan Cameron
November 1, 2006

Super-rockers LIVE performed to a packed house in Cape Town's Bellville Velodrome on Halloween as the final show in their world tour, Black Mountain - White Light.

The group treated the Cape Town fans to a display of showmanship and talent as they swept them up in a three and a half hour mix of classics and recent singles.

The Parliatones warmed up the crowd with a half an hour set before which left the fans seriously hungry for more. They were not dissapointed.

Live started their set with Songs From Black Mountain, their most recent album with hit after hit rolling through the speakers onto the sea of faces in front of the stage.

Lead vocalist Ed Kowalczyk played with the crowd and it was very evident the group has lost none of the edge that created hit albums Throwing Copper and Distance To Here as they ably dusted off old favourites for the crowd which was now bordering on hysterics.

Lighters blazed to Dolphins Cry, heads banged to Shit Towne and Lightning Crashes. A beautiful version of Johnny Cash's Walk The Line and manic instrumental solos kept the crowd guessing.

The 2003 tour promoting Birds of Prey was also in the Velodrome and since then a new bag of tricks poured out, especially in their lighting department which introduced a visual wow factor to the sound.

The crowd would not let the band leave the stage with two massive encores, "You guys want another one?" asked Ed coming back again, "This is not a school night is it?". He also thanked the crowd for, "over the past 15 years, for making sure we have no school nights."

He also paid tribute to Cape Town's beauty, "This town is full of pretty people, is it because you live in such a pretty city?" Each question getting a roar in response.

Playing the final notes to their last song, the group had a huddle on stage before thanking their fans, "You haven't seen the last of us Cape Town, you better believe we'll be coming back."

And when they do this reviewer will be there. Count on it.
