Just finished the Keith Richards autobiography. A must read for music fans. In it, Richards describes Mick Jagger's attempt to go solo:

"Just by his choice of material, it seemed to me, he had really gone off the tracks. It was very sad. He wasn't prepared not to make an impact. But, I can't imagine why he thought it would be good. This is where I felt Mick had lost touch with reality.

"The big betrayal by Mick, which I find hard to forgive, was his announcement of a solo tour. I really believed Mick wouldn't dare tour without the Stones. It was too hard a slap in the face to us. It was a death sentence.

"I saw a clip of Mick's solo show and was asked what I thought about it, and I said it was sad that a high percentage of his show was Rolling Stones songs. If you're going to do something on your own, do songs from your solo albums. Don't pretend you're a solo artist while you're doing our songs.

"Mick had misjudged himself by a hundred miles. He had LVS - Lead Vocalist Syndrome. He took it for granted that any bunch of good musicians would be as compatible with him as the Rolling Stones. But he didn't sound like himself. He could strut around and have a star on his dressing room door and treat the band like underlings, but you can't get good music that way."

All of the above applies to Ed - and damn, I've been a huge Ed defender. Gonna miss his vocal abilities and lyrics:

The day that I was so sweetly sung
The wind seemed to whisper softly "Oh son,
Don't wait for the seas to part
Or messiahs to come
Don't sit around and waste this chance,
to see it!"
- Sparkle

I was wrong. I now realize Ed needed CCP, like they needed him. However, if Mick Jagger - one of the biggest, egomaniac control freaks in the history of rock and roll - can find his way back, maybe there's hope for Ed. I'm not holding my breath though, because Alive is such an incredible piece of shit.

Prior to hearing chris sing those songs I would have agreed with you. They made such a stunning choice that I'm not sure they need Ed anymore.

If this chris guy can ratchet up the sexy for the females on the wall... the transformation will be complete and Ed and LVS will be a thing of the past.

I think that might be what ruined Ed. But I could be wrong...

Not sure about the sober part. But Keith's idea is that if a band has two alpha dogs (usually the lead singer and the lead guitarist), they often split up because one of them realizes his creative success is tied to the other one.

So, they leave because of "creative differences."

Axl Rose and Slash
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Roger Waters and David Gilmour
Ed and Chad Taylor (I'm guessing CT is the other alpha in the band)

it's a good analogy. When the Mick did his solo thing, RIchards did too and the Stones never officially broke up. That is the better way to deal with this. But only some bands figure it out.
