I still don't really hear the "sounds like Ed" in it, I don't think they sound that alike at all. But I think it's a testament of how accurate the band is able to recreate the originals. They've been able to replicate the vibe and energy of times past and I think that may get people swept up with it sounding like Ed. I know what you mean though, that he does have his own stamp and unique take and that its clearly not an Ed impersonator or anything, I know you don't mean that, but even so I think the only way it sounds like Ed is because the songs were created to sound a certain way and they're so faithful to that that there are going to be similarities. I don't see anything that suggests to me that Shinn as an individual performer within the song is trying to be Ed, and I really like that.
There are just tiny little things that some singers do with the way they pronounce certain words or add little inflections or what have you that I really love, they're tiny minuscule parts of a larger picture and sometimes it's just purely natural, but things like the way Shinn sings the words "walked" and "talked" in STD I absolutely love, it's very different to Ed's way. It's extremely subtle but theres a hint of breaking the words to the pronunciation of something like "wah-hawkd" for "walked". The same way in the early years that Ed used to make a lot of words that began with S have an almost "Sh" sound "shtilll they seem him shimmy...". They're just little characteristics which belong exclusively to that singer and that voice.

Can't believe you people are so enthusiastic about the whole thing. The idea of re-recording these songs is pretty pointless anyway, but to do it with someone emulating Ed (You know the person you people hate so much) is just silly. Don't touch Throwing Copper.

Let CCCP make new music, but don't you fucking touch the classics. Yeah i said it!

They're freebie throw away songs to introduce the singer and just share with the fans, I don't think it's pointless. They're using the well known songs so as to safeguard the newer stuff for now and keep some surprises up their sleeve. They aren't trying to rewrite history or anything.

Read my above post on why this isn't someone emulating Ed, he's not, if you think that he is then you're only really hearing what you're conditioned to hear with these songs. If he's any way close to emulating Ed, he's emulating Ed from a time when we all loved Ed, not the Ed that sings these songs with a big goofy grin, changes the meaning of the songs and adds unneeded falsetto. I don't understand this mentality that people think that because we give Ed shit now, that we must have always disliked him.

I had the chance over the weekend to play the mp3's of the songs on my truly excellent sound system in my car. Oh man do these tracks sound great!! I can't believe how much Chris sounds like Ed, but yet doesn't sound like Ed. It is like the core of the original vocals if there, but it is Chrs and you can hear that they are different. And the music is alive and fresh and different, yeat it sounds note-for-note the same. They are new versions that honor the original versions.

If you told me 5 years ago that Live would re-record these classic masterpieces with a new singer that sounds a lot like Ed on the tracks, I would have violently objected to it. One would have to say that they have no business doing this. This is nuts. But I'll be damned if they didn't pull off this unbelievable feat. It's like listening to them for the first time all over again. I'm an enthusiastic supporter and loyalist for this new music.

I feel the same way. I like Selling the Drama (Chris Shinn's version) specifically for this reason!

Nobody re-recorded them. Those were recorded during a rehearsal. Nuff said.

If you check out the Candlebox thread there is a pretty good interview where Kevin talks about the reasons for bands to re-record their own albums. Basically gives them sole rights to do whatever the hell they want to do with the new recordings...

Throwing Copper is the best album Live ever made. I prefer the original recording more than the recordings with Shinn, but i think Shinn did a great job. He did his very best and it wasn't easy to record those songs when you knew the original recording became hits.

And i don't hate Ed btw. I still love Ed his music. why most people hate him is because the lead singer bonus.

It certainly isn't primarily because of the bonus. It's the lying, the way he treated fans for years, the fact that he's become a sellout who is only concerned about money, and the way that he stabbed his former band members in the back. That's why there is such strong dislike for him.

I completly understand why the most people on this board hate Ed. I can't help it, but i still like Ed. I still love his voice and the songs he wrote. His lyrics are since 2001 are a bit 'weird' but i'm still a great fan of Ed. His music is still good for me.

all of this and the fact that he was the primary reason for the demise of my favorite band. Because of everything we know about him I still have a tough time listening to their albums.

I still enjoy and turn up the radio when the songs come on and Ed singing. Will never change. That was a moment in time, captured forever. The past is relived by listening to those records and concert tapes. It's what make me a fan. Turn the page forward from 2000 on and the songs started to change, the message was changing, the singer is not the same singer or person.....oh well. The dynamic changed......glad I have alots of old reference points to keep the perspective of the spirit of Live going!!! Now we are getting it back!!

Thing is the pat 10 years and what has gone on has painted a not so nice picture of this dynamic and the egocentrics of the singer. Makes me always reflect that I was glad to experience the band way back then, because it was tough to stomach for a long time since 2000.
