So yeah, Badman, I'd say he's down to earth. he's the opposite of arrogant. I know a lot of people are going to throw out some EK stories of arrogance (I have lots of great EK stories as a fan) but this isn't about comparing the two. Just compared to the rest of humanity that I've encountered, Chris Shinn seems like an incredibly normal, warm, thankful, pleasant, polite person. It was a pleasure to meet him.

He's a no name musician. Why would he be arrogant?

My observations, having listened through a few times:

1) I think Shinn does a nice job. Sounds close enough to the original but he puts hs own stamp on it a bit also. I mean honestly, if I go to a Live show, I want I Alone to sound like I Alone. I think he accomplishes that.

2) Although its interesting to hear what Shinn sounds like, I still prefer the originals and would put on the Throwing Copper CD before I would turn to these. TC Ed still blows Shinn away on these songs.

3) To the contrary, CCP have not sounded this good in years. The music truly sounds like they have reawakened and the intensity that has been lacking is back.

I agree with all of these points. I hope the band won't spend too much time trying to recreate songs from 1994-1998 because no one will ever top the way Ed sounded during those years. Hate what Ed became all you want, but he kicked ass on those couple of albums.

I totally get what they're doing by playing those classic songs at the show, and putting out these rough recordings, it makes a ton of sense, but I hope the boys have set aside a lot of time to work on new Live songs for 2012. That's what I'm dying to hear. CCP are obviously fired up and ready to go, and Shinn obviously wants to bring some intensity back, so let's do it! lol.gif

QUOTE(dancing queen @ Mar 21 2012, 10:05 am) *

I had the amazing good fortune to be front row in York on the 12th, run into Chris after the show right outside the theater, and then sit next to him at the White Rose.

On stage on monday he was nervous and I think it's been mentioned how he appeared to be finding his proper presence (I'm really excited to have heard that he seemed even more comfortable at SXSW). I stood next to a photographer friend (actually I was between her and Jimmy much of the night) and she told me just how nervous Chris was. But I could tell that from where I stood. It was obvious, just from watching him on stage, how humbled and grateful he was to be there... especially at the close of tbd... when he covers his face with his hands.

outside the theater he was hysterical, he was very grateful to any comments he received, he had no ego whatsoever - took pictures with anyone who wanted them and chatted it up with everyone who spoke to him. When he took a picture with me he grabbed me and had me in a weird/funny headlock kind of thing that still makes me laugh. he was goofy (I think riding a pure adrenaline wave).

At the White Rose, as soon as he came in a few of us said hi and he signed some setlists and tickets and gave everyone roses. (from what I understand they were ones that his mom had given him, and he wanted to share the love). He again was funny and warm and just seemed genuinely thrilled to be there. He sat with and talked to Kevin Martin for a while, and I had no intention of disrupting him. By the time I wanted to leave, though, CS was talking to someone else, and that guy was blocking my exit, so I had to interrupt to get up. As I did, the other guy walked away, Chris shook my hand, asked my name, thanked me for coming to the show. Seriously. And he engaged me and my friend in a 5-10 minute conversation before spilling his drink all over himself (talking with his hands). By the way, he spilled a drink all into his lap, looked at it, shrugged his shoulders, and kept talking. people passed him napkins, but he just did his best to wipe his lap and didn't seem too irritated by it. When I left he shook my hand again and said "I'll see you again!" and I said "absolutely"

So yeah, Badman, I'd say he's down to earth. he's the opposite of arrogant. I know a lot of people are going to throw out some EK stories of arrogance (I have lots of great EK stories as a fan) but this isn't about comparing the two. Back in the day I was lucky enough to meet the guys a few times and on all occasions CCP were down to earth and a pleasure to speak with. I have seen Ed back stage a few times but never actually spoke with him (based on my observations I think it had something to do with my lack of breasts)

And that pretty much sums up his current fanbase. A bunch of women that oggled him when Live was on top. Oh, and Nick.

I think The Dam at Otter Creek on March 12, 2012 will be the first legend of the new Live thumbsup.gif

And I have downloaded the new mp3's and put them on my phone and my ipod and a cd so I can listen in the car... but I'm sitting here listening to them off the website and I am really really falling in love with this voice. I have heard a lot of decent versions of LC, none better than old Ed. But this is awesome. I just keep listening. And I have things to do. But nope....

For anyone that cares.....here's what I did. I recorded all of the songs in FLAC format straight from the website. I don't know if the MP3s that are available were recorded the same way, but if they were, by re-encoding to a lossy format, you lose even more data. By ripping to FLAC, I get exactly what was streaming on the website.

I also created some artwork - I call it the "Freaks 4 Live EP". I took the background on the site and added the logo at the bottom. Note that the artwork in the zip file was the original, crappier version. smile.gif

The MP3s I posted on the first page of this thread were not re-encoded. They are direct rips of the tracks being played on the website. I found the location of the MP3 files on the Freaks4Live server and downloaded them directly.

OK....then the FLAC files are just overkill. I will download your files then....

Hey Matt, do you know what the font is for "Freaks" and "EP"?

I had the chance over the weekend to play the mp3's of the songs on my truly excellent sound system in my car. Oh man do these tracks sound great!! I can't believe how much Chris sounds like Ed, but yet doesn't sound like Ed. It is like the core of the original vocals if there, but it is Chrs and you can hear that they are different. And the music is alive and fresh and different, yeat it sounds note-for-note the same. They are new versions that honor the original versions.

If you told me 5 years ago that Live would re-record these classic masterpieces with a new singer that sounds a lot like Ed on the tracks, I would have violently objected to it. One would have to say that they have no business doing this. This is nuts. But I'll be damned if they didn't pull off this unbelievable feat. It's like listening to them for the first time all over again. I'm an enthusiastic supporter and loyalist for this new music.
