I guess the YDR article speaks what most of us have been surmising for a long time.

Live's new lead singer is Chris Shinn, formerly of Unified Theory

Chris Shinn can sing.

His voice wasn't a concern when the members of Live asked him to be the group's new frontman several months ago.

"Are we going to groove as friends and partners?" Shinn said he wondered when he accepted the offer.

On Monday night, the group was set to introduce Shinn to its hometown with an invitation-only concert at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center. He's the new guy in a band that formed in York almost three decades ago.

Chad Taylor, Patrick Dahlheimer, Chad Gracey and Ed Kowalczyk grew up here and started Live in the mid-1980s. The group hit it big in the 1990s with a string of platinum albums and world tours.

But Live stalled about four years ago after former frontman Kowalczyk left to pursue a solo career. The other three members formed a side project called The Gracious Few with members of the band Candlebox. Taylor said the band didn't play Live songs.

When they decided to move forward with Live, Taylor, Dahlheimer and Gracey reached out to Kowalczyk, but didn't hear back. So they contacted Shinn, who they've known for a dozen years.

He is best known as the lead singer of Unified Theory, a band composed of Shinn; former Blind Melon members Brad Smith and Christopher Thorn, a Dover native; and former Pearl Jam drummer Dave Krusen.

As a teen, Shinn said, he used to play Live songs on his acoustic guitar. Unified Theory opened for Live during a tour around the millennium but he never dreamed he'd be in the band one day.

Before sound check Monday afternoon, he sat next to Taylor in the Strand's seats.

"We'll see if he gets the gig," Taylor joked. "We'll see what my mom says."

Taylor said Live is working on new material, but in an effort to keep any new tunes off YouTube, the band stuck to its hits Monday. During sound check, they rehearsed "I Alone," "Selling the Drama" and "All Over You." Sean Hennesy of Candlebox and Alexander Lefever joined the band on stage as backing musicians.

Monday's concert, Taylor said, was billed as a rehearsal for family and friends, so Live can solidify its new lineup. They have yet to decide what comes next.

"There is no master plan," Taylor said. "We're getting a feel for what it's like

The band is hosting an invitation-only show, at which they will debut their new lead singer. (DAILY RECORD/SUNDAY NEWS - CHRIS DUNN)to be in a band with Chris."

Shinn, a native of Charlotte, N.C., now lives in Nashville, Tenn., but frequently travels to York. He said he's interested in getting involved with Think Loud, a development company run by Taylor, Dahlheimer, Gracey and Bill Hynes. In January, the company announced plans to renovate a structure on East York Street in York, bringing jobs to the city.

"It's like joining a family," Shinn said of being a part of the band. "These guys do everything together."

More about Monday's concert
The evening was hosted by Think Loud Development in association with Kinsley Construction, LSC Design, York Mayor Kim Bracey and the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center.

It included a cocktail hour followed by performances by area artists Dana Alexandra and Chad Taylor's brother Adam and his band, The Rain Dogs. Candlebox took the stage before a rehearsal-type set from the new incarnation of Live.

Chad Taylor said the show was also a good way to practice for a Gracious Few gig March 17 at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.
