I swear I've seen an interview where chad and pat or ed and pat (I can't remember) discuss I Alone and it has to be chad I swear (I'm getting old, my memory is failing) who says that I Alone is one of the most beautiful love songs he's ever heard. My friends and I who fell in love with Live in high school all talked about how amazing it was that a love song could sound so vicious.
I've never considered it anything other than a love song.
you're right Funky, it's interesting that it has so many interpretations.
and in regards to the interview... I'll try to find it but I cannot for the life of me remember what/where I saw it. sorry I'm such a poor historian.

where/when did that mtv clip come from, anyway?

the wiki page for I Alone says
Lead singer Ed Kowalczyk said of the songs lyrics, "People think 'I Alone' is a love song but it really wasn't. The lyrics were more abstract, encompassing a much larger message."

and cites a yahoo page (though the link no longer works)

so maybe all of my friends and I were wrong. or, I'll still think of it as a love song because that's what it is to me.

Yea but we also have Chad saying that he doesn't know Ed's lyrics. Even if Ed didn't mean it to be a love song with a traditional love message, it can still be that kind of love song for anyone. But theres no way that Live, TC time, was the "chick flick of rock and roll"

I have thought that I Alone had lyrics that, like many of the songs on Mental Jewelry and Throwing Copper, reflected the teachings of Krishnamurti. I have read Krishnamurti and I receive daily email quotes from Krishnamurti and he talked about what it means to be "Alone" and to love from a position of being "Alone". This is not to say that one is all by their lonesome. To be "Alone" in Krishnamurti's words means to be free from all conditioning and beliefs - free from attachment and clinging and seperation and judgment that comes from doctrines and belief systems and culture and conditioning. According to Krishnamurti, the only way to truly love something, is to love from a position of "aloneness", as described in the preceding sentence. So when Ed says, I Alone love you, he is saying that he "truly" loves, from and undefiled place of pure unconditioned love. It is no coincidence to me that Ed was influenced by Krishnamurti at this time, and Krishnamurti has a whole strain of philosophy about what he calls being "alone". Look at the balance of the lyrics of the song, including the lyrics that Nick quotes in his signature like a fortune cookie saying. This song has much more going on in a deep spiritual place, than a "chick flick rock" review or than Nick can truly appreciate.

Pokey, don't know what ur missing but Ed doesn't want to play with Live anymore not the other way around. I wish that wasn't the case but stop rewriting history.

I'm sure there is more too it than that. CCP may be open to Ed coming back but not unconditionally. My reference to Ed not being allowed to play with Live anymore is based on the way thongs worked towards the end. I'm pretty sure if Ed wanted to come back under the SFBM structure that he wouldn't be let back in. And seeing as he seemingly still wants creative control that's probably a major loggerheads. Not rewriting history, I just didn't think we had to fully expand every little detail by this stage.

Funky got it right, can't we get it back on track? Back to my point about Think Louder with LIVE? Or perhaps Nick would like to kick us off by responding to Fish's original post?

I will respond to Fish. I like his post. Never thought of it that way. I always saw it as the devil talking (lying) to Adam and Eve. Maybe the snake in the video had something to do with me thinking that. Him telling them that the greatest of teachers won't hesitate to leave them and that he alone loves them etc.

Ed mentioned many times he didn't want to play w. CCP anymore. But in the most recent interview he said he wasn't going to close doors permanently.

Meanwhile, CCP have mentioned the possibility of getting back with Ed, but who knows if they really meant it, or if it was just a pretext for getting people interested in whatever other news they were pushing at the time.

Just watched PJ20 and it made me realize once again that these things like death and band-breakups do happen and life goes on - but the music that we have; we'll hold dear forever.

A few weeks back I got my wife to watch Paradiso with me. She could immediately see the bond between band and fans and how it's more like a rollercoaster for us 'together' as band and fans. She also noticed how pro-Ed everything since SS/TDTH had become. 'It wasn't always like that, right?' she asks. Heh.

The thing I'm getting at is, everytime I read this board and I nod in agreement with Fish or OTD or Pokey, Merica, Funky, Wam, z-man and Dimitri (forgive me if I've missed out a few regs on the way) - or even Nick who frustrates peaceful Hindu cows - I realize that many of us have moved on and are still upset but excited at what's still to come.

In the Pearl Jam docu (which if you haven't seen as yet, you should), a fan remarks 'The end? It's sounds like this band is just getting started!' - you could hear that energy in TGF and some of Ed's stuff.

Hopefully, that all leads to better days for us as fans of this great group of musicians.

Rock on, LIVE! rockin.gif

Brother, I was at a 2nd-hand music store the other day and I found The Dolphin's Cry and TSUFL singles packaged as a double-disc and as I played it on the way home, I wondered, 'Man! How great are these guys..."
