His Tweet only has the first 160 characters of the Facebook message and a link to his Facebook message.

I was going to click through the tweet and read it as soon as I saw it this morning, but I decided not to due to my growing apathy about Ed. Now I wish that I had read it. I'm intrigued.

If you're reading and understanding this, then we are NOT in the world where the ancient Aztecs cut out live baby hearts and chucked them down into a water slide or whatever they did. they did that shit cuz they were crazy and their calendar was friggin' crazy. sorry for my colloquial use of the language...but happy f%^*^ing new year!! 2012!!!! Errrr, wasn't it the Mayans who predicted this end of world stuff?

First - Ed states Aztecs but is referring the the Mayan Calendar (but yes the Aztecs also did practice sacrifice so I guess he gets partial credit on his history test )

Second - the fact that an ancient civilization was able to create a calendar with multiple layers and cycles (they had short, medium and long cycles) that projected out until the year 2012 with such accuracy is amazing, not crazy

Third - the end of the Mayan calendar is the end of their longest projected cycle. It does not mark the end of the world - that is misinterpretation used to cause hysteria. They simply had not yet calculated the next cycle which would have encompassed thousands of years

Finally - in my book Ed has progressed from dabbling with religion, to exploring it, to preaching, now to just being plain crazy, creepy and weird. If I ran into him on the street, didn't know who he was, and heard some of the religious stuff he's said lately I'd think he was straight out of a mental institution.

Wow... His songs used to be about peace, tolerance, and love. This post was really ethnocentric of Ed and 4 years ago I couldn't have imagined him posting this. This sounds like a rant from someone's small-minded dad on facebook. I'm glad he stopped short of saying that white people (and western culture in general) are biologically superior to the Aztecs. ... Unless that's what was implied by that 2000 years of evolution line

Hoodie, thanks for clearly explaining the Mayan calendar. Ed must've been pretty drunk. The Mayan's were actually rather genius astronomers and the fact that their calendar (the one ending this year) is 5000 of our calendar years long is pretty impressive. It was multiple calendars in one, mostly likely used to properly plan crop planting/harvesting and such...
anyway, hopefully, for Ed's sake, he's more informed now that he's sober.
