In November 2008, Blind Melon announced Chris Shinn would replace Travis Warren as lead vocalist for the tour, but then decided to cancel their tour, stating that Shinn did not have enough time to prepare for the tour with only two days notice. On November 11, 2008, Blind Melon announced on their MySpace page that they were currently engaged in a search for a new vocalist. It is unknown whether Shinn is a contender for the permanent position as lead singer for Blind Melon at present.

While I was watching Elmo sing and shimmy and shake I had the thought pop into my mind that Rockin Elmo has more authentic passion and soul in his performance than Ed does in that youtube clip that was linked in this thread. Rockin Elmo is closer to Ed in the 90's than Ed of 2011 is. And the songs that Elmo sings are better than anything off of Alive.

Blind Melon decided to cancel their tour instead of letting Chris Shinn front them. If it was strictly a time issue, they could have just postponed their tour a few months until Shinn was more familar with Blind Melon's material.

If the new lead singer IS Chris Shinn (and who knows if it is) then I think that is a good thing from one BIG perspective, if none other:

Chris Shinn is today where Ed Kowalczyk was in 1994 - musically, lyrically, vocally, and from the perspective of passion, energy and hunger. We can debate about whether his voice is "as good" as younger Ed vocally. But I mean that sound in the nuance of his voice that reflects all the other things I described in the preceding sentence.

Ed in 1994 and Chris Shinn today = Rocky Balboa in Rocky I

Ed in 2012 = Rocky Balboa in Rocky V and Rocky VI.
