Who cares? This was 10 years ago and maybe he said that to give more meaning to te people who used the song to cope with the horrible tragedy, not cash in..The group on this board is incredibly judgmental

So more meaning means making lies? The song had enough meaning within it and it fit well for the events. I really don't care more beyond this post but come on. Let's call a spade a spade.

Hoodie,

Nick said he's not sure if it is Ed, and said even if he liked how the clip sounded and it was not Ed, that he was concerned that Live fans would not accept this sort of voice copying, and implied that he would dislike the disingenuous aspect of the situation.

Hey moron - thanks for telling me your interpretation of what Nick said. Sadly, it's incorrect and what he said is actually word for word in my last post

He was directly asked "Do you like the clip or not?" He never answered the question, said he did, called it an imitation of Ed, and then said he wasn't sure if it was Ed.

Since then he's read the post and avoided answering the question. He's wormed his way out of making a concrete comment on the clip, regarding whether or not he likes the sound of it, because he's scared of getting burnt by possibly replying in a way that would go against his stance.

I DIDN'T ASK HIM IF HE THOUGHT IT WAS ED. I ASKED WORM BOY IF HE LIKES THE CLIP!!!!!!!

If Nick waits long enough he'll get a response from either CCP or Ed and then he can decide whether he likes it based on who actually sang it. If it's Ed he'll love it, if it's someone else he'll absolutely hate it and trash CCP as well as the new singer and smash all of the relevant Facebook pages.

I suppose I have a moment to show a flaming dumbass such as yourself how you've become confused.

You asked Nick if he "liked the clip", which is not the same as asking him if he likes the "sound" of the clip.

Let's say you hand a person a sandwich and they eat it. Then you ask the person if they like the sandwich, and the person says it tastes good. Then you tell the person the sandwich contains horse meat. While the person liked the taste, the person might not like the sandwich, since the person does not like certain things about eating horse meat.

Nick implied that even if he liked the "sound" of the clip, he still might not "like the clip," and he indicated why.

I don't doubt that Nick makes hypocritical statements, and may be trying to avoid hypocrisy in this case. But you don't have him on anything right now, so no need for your whining.

There you have it, carry on.

I think you and mattyeagles both have a good point about Overcome. Ed's commentary about the origins of Overcome on Jay Leno poses an interesting ethical scenario.

As far as Ed being unethical, I think the question is:

Is it worth lying to your core fan base and exploit the 911 tragedy in order to make money (for himself or for himself and CCP), but also consequentially help some people cope with 911?

Depending on whether Ed knew the interview questions ahead of time, I think Ed may have made an on-the-spot decision to market the song, exploit the tragedy, and help people cope with 911, at the cost of the core fan base.

There are many possibilities to consider:

Maybe Ed tended to think entirely or mostly about making money.

Maybe Ed tended to think entirely or mostly about helping people cope with 911.

Maybe, and this is a long shot, Ed actually didn't remember the details of the song at the moment, or for some reason Ed actually tried to answer the question in good faith.

Maybe, Ed did not actively pursue lying on Jay Leno, but suddenly felt pressure to lie. Maybe Ed had considered telling the truth about the history of the song, and thought it would be a bad idea. This could mean that Ed had bad, mixed, or good intentions. For example, what if Ed said that the song was written a long time ago and had no connection to 911? Ed might have been worried that the people who relied on Overcome, who were lifted by Overcome, who had assumed a connection between overcome and 911 on their own, might ultimately have been let down and disappointed knowing that the song had no connection to the 911 events.

How could there be possibly be a connection between 9/11 and Overcome? Do people think that it's possible to write, record and release a song as good as Overcome in 2 days?

IIRC, Ed said on the Jay Leno show that Live wrote the song 6(?) months prior to 9/11. That in itself would have ruined the illusion that Overcome was inspired by 9/11. By telling the truth and saying it was written as early as 1998 wouldn't have made any difference. I can't understand what advantage Ed thought he was getting by lying.

More sales, more spins, more listens from those, who "know it is written in memory of..."

My 2 cents

That is right...scratch most of my previous argument.

I have a hard time thinking of advantages to the lying as well.

It might be considered unbecoming of an artist, or it might be against promotional strategy, for Ed to admit that he put a song on an album that they wrote a few years ago. Artists definitely have recorded music that was written a while ago, and put them on new albums, like what Radiohead does (and people love it). But I have heard that brand new tracks on an album can be a selling point. Maybe people expect to hear new music and Ed didn't want to point attention to the fact the song was a few years old.

I'm not sure what to think about Ed's comment. It is a lie, but it bewilders me more than it makes me angry. I always suspected Live of being full of shit when it came to promoting their music, since I saw their interviews back in 1995-1997...but I thought it was all part of the game. Maybe Ed was just off his game on Leno with that comment, frustrating his core base with little promotional gain. Did Jay actually ask Ed when the song was written or did Ed bring it up? Did Ed know the questions ahead of time? Maybe Ed figured that people were in a state of shock, looking for someone to believe in, and might see Ed as some having some sort of intuition as to the state of the world. Maybe he thought he could be seen as someone who was warning us about the bad things in the world, just a few months before shit went down....who the hell knows.

The thing that I was actually really pissed about, was how shitty the performance was. The MTV clip from 1998 was the most excited I ever was about the song. I don't even care much for the TDTH demo. It was a track that I think never reached it potential, even though that syrupy Railo piano version on V had some mainstream popularity.

Moron - nice try on throwing in different verb tense to justify your stupidity. BTW, I never said "Nick, do you LIKED the clip".

Asking if you "like the clip" or "like the sound of the clip" or "enjoyed the clip" or "preferred the clip" all have synonymous meaning. Regardless of the meaning he is a worm boy and has never answered the question.

He knows it leaves the door open for him to look like a hypocrite, so he refuses to address the question.
