Two words: William DuVall

At times that guy sounds just like Laynes Staley and at times sounds nothing like him.

That may be just what we have here with whoever this is... because that isn't Ed. Sounds as good as Ed once did though.

Even if the guy can mimic Ed right down to the high pitch "HooOO" sounds... what I'm waiting for is BRAND NEW material, written with this new guy. Killer new music is even more important than getting a guy who sounds good or even great when singing the old material.

Duvall is an interesting comparison.

Agreed on rather hearing new material than old stuff. This game isn't particularly fun to me.

Just think about it. Why would they post a FB update of some random bootleg of STD labeled Nov 14, 2011 3:39pm?

We know the guys are in the studio working on new material with the new singer

If this was an old Live clip whoever posted it would have said something to the effect of "Back in the day..." or "Clip from an early concert in 94".

At first I thought it was Ed... then I listened to it again... and again...

In my opinion this is not Ed. And I hear passion in this new singers voice. Something that I have not heard from Ed in years. Plus there is no falsetto either!! banana.gif

Right on my friend! It's not Ed and the new material is gonna be great!

If Ed is not in Live but is singing Live songs, would that make him and his band Live impersonators?

thats a great question. i seem to have two different standards. when Ed plays Live songs with his new band, I can accept it because i know that it's just Ed doing his over-the-hill nostalgia act. But if a new singer for Live sings Ed's parts, I just can't accept it. Live has to be original, the emotion behind the lyrics has to come from the source.

Does Facebook automatically label uploaded videos with the current date as the default? If so, they could have been posting old material and the current date labeling would make sense.

Here's the key Live fans - the spirit of Live is within us. If you can hear the music, and remember how you felt when you first got into Live and fell in love with the music - then enjoy and be happy.

Third Eye Blind: huge in the 90's, disappears for awhile in the last decade, gets re-discovered by the new college generation. Current status: selling out shows wherever they go. Same thing for Bush, Smashing Pumpkins, etc... (talking about ticket sales here, not music sales).

Yeah, I don't think Live is geared towards kids anymore. SP and 3EB had a lot of songs aimed at frustrated youth. Gavin stayed in the tabloids with Gwen.

Otherwise, 3EB and SP play tiny ass venues. Oddly enough, there was turmoil with the original members of both these bands. Jenkins screwed over two guitarists so far. Billy kicked out his whole band. These alt bands are washed up as far as putting out new material, even though they might still have some kick left when they play live. I highly doubt college kids are discovering these bands for their new work (sound of winter an exception), though the kids might enjoy their older stuff.

the source is always ED for Live, don't think about this.

It is interesting. The clip is being debated as a NEW singer or an OLD Ed clip.

Which brings me to the conclusion that the NEW singer sounds like OLD Ed.

What is the problem besides it being not Ed?

Still listening to the clip and trying to convince myself this is not Ed. Its not working. To me it sounds exactly like a live recording of Ed. There are several spots where you can hear nuances that are all Ed (such as the first "scarred like that"; its spot on).

Of course, that does leave me with two questions:

1) If it were Ed, what was the point of posting the clip? (unless it was to fuel speculation, which is exactly what its done), and

2) Aside from this board and a handful of Facebook fans, does anyone even care? I still don't get why they don't just announce the new singer. To me, it fuels speculation that they are trying to reunite with Ed and terms have yet to be worked out. That may just be wishful thinking, but it makes more sense to me than trying to create some kind of buzz among a very, very small number of fans.

Whatever its purpose was it will be left to slowly fade away over the next 6 months and then maybe we will get another tease about the website.

It is funny. Each time things like this happen I am over them a little faster. I am already over this clip. It took 2 days. The website tease took about a week and a half. Prior to that I don't even remember the last "update".

Why are more people convinced that it's somebody doing a great Ed impression, than think it's an old bootleg - in keeping with the 'old' photo.

I really don't think getting an Ed impersonator in is in keeping with what Chad and that have said over the past couple of years. I think it's far more likely that he's playing an old recording over an old photo image. I think it's pre-TC release Ed - transitions from MJ to TC style in terms of vocals.

If I knew nothing else and I just heard this, I wouldn't think it is anyone else but Ed. To me, it sounds EXACTLY like Ed. My judgment is that it IS Ed. However, I have seen the right statement from the right people who I recognize to know more than I know, who have intimated that it is not Ed.

I do not think that it is an Ed impersonator. I think that it is a great vocalist who can make great new Live music and can also sing the old songs in concert in a fashion that sounds like Ed.

For example, imagine it is 1986. David Lee Roth just got kicked out of Van Halen and they replaced him with Sammy Hagar. Van Halen went on to make some great music. It sounded like Van Halen, yet it sounded nothing like David Lee Roth. I saw the 5150 tour that year. Van Halen played alot of their new stuff from 5150. They also played classic Van Halen songs and Sammy didn't sound anything like David Lee Roth when he sang them. Now imagine for a moment that When Sammy sang the old songs, his voice sounded exactly like David Lee Roth. Would that be great? I think that might be what we are talking about here.

But... why recording a (unknown) bootleg or demo with your phone (or whatever) ? In that case, if they wanted to let us hear those glory days, it's more likely that they would put a real recording on thier page? (at least I know I would, when I want to share something I'm proud of)

I've been thinking about it... Ofcourse I don't know (like anyone here), but to me their update was just really to combine to old and new. Visually the old, musically the new (which they only wanted to share via a short part).
The picture shows "we want to get back the old days (something they're telling us for months), the music track might really be the way they want to that ...
