It may work on a studio recording, but I seriously doubt that an Ed impersonator will be accepted at an actual "LIVE" concert.

This is absolutely correct. Who wants to see Karaoke LIVE? What a joke. The new singer can't copy Ed Kowalczyk - one of the most unique voices in rock history. Still hoping this is a dark joke and CCP will announce that the REAL Ed is back with LIVE.

This kind of debate/anticipation, to me, isn't fun. It's just infuriating. I'd be far more excited for the future project if I knew the answer - either way. This doesn't keep me in eager suspense, it just annoys me and pushes me further away. I don't want to be teased this way. sad.gif

As I said, I'm past caring who the new lead singer is. Don't even name him, just release an album this summer and let it speak for itself.

Really? He already has a few people fooled.

If it sounds like Ed or if it doesn't really doesn't matter to me. All I care about is if it sounds good.

Selling the Drama is my favorite Live song of all time. I've listened to tons of versions thousands of times.

It's not Ed. Just listen to the inflection in the voice.

When the band makes the statement that this is "the new Live" you can bow down to my ability to catch this when you couldn't!

Seriously - just listen and if you can't hear that's not Ed you must be getting old! eyebrow.gif

Shit man, I am not sure. The more I listen the more doubtful I am that it is Ed.

The "I know, I know" and "scared like that" bits don't sound like Ed.

Who fucking knows. I wish they'd just let us know.

And I guess I am getting old, 38 ain't no spring chicken ! ! ! ! ! lol.gif

Here's the key Live fans - the spirit of Live is within us. If you can hear the music, and remember how you felt when you first got into Live and fell in love with the music - then enjoy and be happy.

I liked the passion I heard in the mystery voice. If that's the new singer - the Live lives. Because it reminds me of why I fell in love with the music in the first place. It takes me back. I'm excited at the idea of refreshed passion being poured into these classics.

No, it's not what it used to be. It never will be. Take it for what it is. And if that's the new singer, I believe it will be good.

Eh, I have the spirit of about 100 other bands that I could go see live. I was/am a huge fan of Chris Shinn, so this would be a really disappointing choice to me. Glad others may enjoy it though!

Unless, of course, it is Ed on an old demo from TC.

He won't be fooling anyone when he walks out on stage, and starts up his best Karaoke version of (pick your song...).

I'm starting to feel the LIVE train... might be approaching the end of the line. Why? Let's do a quick comparison.

Third Eye Blind: huge in the 90's, disappears for awhile in the last decade, gets re-discovered by the new college generation. Current status: selling out shows wherever they go. Same thing for Bush, Smashing Pumpkins, etc... (talking about ticket sales here, not music sales).

What about LIVE? I asked some younger co-workers - the hot ones, anyway - about LIVE. They all knew 3EB, Pumpkins, and Bush. Only one of them knew LIVE, and I had to sing Lightning Crashes for the others.

So, LIVE's got some work to do. The bands mentioned above all have something LIVE doesn't: massive goodwill from the casual fan. Sure, we love em... but the younger generation don't even know who they are.

Now without the casual fan, who's left? Us. And some random dude is gonna walk out on stage and start singing Ed's lyrics? Are you joking? Welcome to LIVE Karaoke.

You know they're reading the facebook reactions and the stuff here and probably loving it. If the serious fans can't tell the difference in the sound there's no way the casual fans will know the difference (or probably even care). I think this verifies to them that the Live sound is back.

For those complaining about Karaoke, the guy sang the song how it's supposed to be sung. In that short clip he nailed it (about as good an anyone not named Ed could).

If it sounded different the same people would complain "it don't sound like Live cause it ain't Ed". - You've already decided that no matter what, you won't like it.

I think there will be similarities in the sound and how the songs are sung but it's not going to sound exactly like Ed (it never will).

I'm sure if they played the whole track you'd definitely find a lot of differences.

Personally, understanding that Ed has gone off to do his own thing (releasing solo stuff and playing Live songs in concert) I'm excited to see Live give it a go!

I hope I can enjoy it and that clip gives me a glimmer of hope.

I like what i hear there, no matter who is singing. If it is Ed, i like it. If it is someone else, i like it. Therefore, it is good to ME!

So, if it's a 70 year old fat drag queen, you still like it? Get real. Of course it matters.

First of all, you know that's not the case.

Secondly, why would it matter? Is that going to jump out at me if I listen to the new album. This is music, not movies.

Why don't you answer this question - do you like the sound of the clip? It's all about the sound, and if you can't tell it's not Ed then it must sound alright to you.

No, I don't like the clip, because it doesn't sound like Ed to me. Especially at the end. Could be wrong, of course - Ed's done a lot of crazy shit with his vocals over the years. But, it would be much, much better if it WAS Ed in the clip. Then I would have hope that Ed was reuniting with CCP.

My only problem (and it's a big one) is this: without Ed, these songs might rock a little. But they'll just be nicely polished cover songs. Kind of ridiculous isn't it? LIVE will become a cover band, every bit the shadow of it's former self that Ed's solo act is. For better or worse, they need each other, because Ed's damn voice, and songwriting skills, are so distinctive.

God damn. I was sure it was Ed, and now I listened to it again, and can see where people are saying it doesn't sound like Ed. Specifically the last part when he sings "scarred like that". When he says the word "that" he says it in a much softer tone than Ed would. That soft tone definately sounds like Chris Shinn. I would just be blown away if he could do that good of an impression of Ed. I'm still not sure if this is what I was hoping for in a new Live singer. I was envisioning something a little more distinct. Of course this could be just the "sound like Ed" take, and the real one will be different.

Two words: William DuVall

At times that guy sounds just like Laynes Staley and at times sounds nothing like him.

That may be just what we have here with whoever this is... because that isn't Ed. Sounds as good as Ed once did though.

Even if the guy can mimic Ed right down to the high pitch "HooOO" sounds... what I'm waiting for is BRAND NEW material, written with this new guy. Killer new music is even more important than getting a guy who sounds good or even great when singing the old material.
