Sad. Probably the most important band to the alternative rock movement. They were really the ones who paved the way for the breakthrough that Nirvana had.

Sucks that I've never seen them live. Wish they would at least do a farewell tour.

Once Bill Berry left, they were never the same band again.

That being said they were a great band to follow in the 80's to mid 90's. I had a chance to see them during the Monster tour, with Radiohead opening for them. Simply an amazing show. In fact, Ed and CT came on stage and played with them during "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)".

I saw them in 1996 in the Philadelphia Spectrum.....fantastic show.

Probably the right time really .. they've given us some amazing songs over the years though.
REM always frustrated me in the sense that on every album they would do 2,3 or 4 songs that were just mind blowingly good, and then the rest of the album just seemed like complete filler to me which I could not get into.

They were still a great band to follow in 2011. The dynamic definitely changed after Bill Berry left but with 2008's Accelerate they seemed to recapture the spark that drove them in the early years. What I've heard of their newest release Collapse Into Now is just as good. I saw their last tour in 2008 and it was one of the best shows I've seen by any band, anywhere. This performance of Living Well is the Best Revenge from Accelerate shows they were still on the top of their game.

Love the song Uberlin, from their latest release Collapse Into Now. Sounds like something that could have been on 1992's Automatic for the People.
