I'm sorry but YES, if released now in June 2011, this song would be fucking massive! It still has the power to give me goosebumps. It's just a really, really REALLY good song.

release the fucking thing. live is dead, no one cares anymore. Let the people have the best song ever recorded.

LEAK THE FUCKER

Alright I will finally say it. I like Hold me Up. Rocking song. But I don't get how so many of you are putting this song at such a high pedestal. Obviously in my opinion, it ain't that special.
But I also think Deeper is an amazing song and everyone should see it that way too smile.gif .
It's all good though, shows how everyone has different tastes. Some are same and yet there are ones where it's all "seriously? wtf, how can you like that one and not this one?"

I'd take Deeper, Don't Wait and Change (wish there was a good quality of this one) over HMP.

The thing about Hold Me Up is that whether it's a "hit" or not would have depended on when it was released. Right now, no one would really care besides the die hards that have been waiting for it. If it were released at the right time then it would have done some good because it comes from a time when Live were totally on top of their game. It has a sound that fit the TC era.
I think I like Hold Me Up because it has that sort of run away freight train feel to it like great Live songs do such as Iris for example, that once it hits its strides its just a relentless rock song.

haha well damn, the song is good quality compared to the Change version. Fuck I want to hear Change in good quality. Though it did bring up Jesus I think in a way that 2011 daEK might not find acceptable. (really the quality of the song was so bad I can barely make out lyrics) But I don't think it fits the EK basket these days.

and just to spice things up:

A shephard is a man afraid of
Losing all the things he made up to
Keep his feet planted high above the field

I'd love that real, quality version of Hold Me Up, but I know it won't be a radio hit right now. Those things require promotion that simply doesn't exist.

As for what I'd rather hear, give me Change. I always thought that song was brilliant and I was extremely disappointed when it didn't show up with the other TDTH demos.

I gave transcribing the lyrics a go a while back and another poster filled in the bits I didn't know. You can check it out right here.

Take a look at all the Zack and Miri postings on YouTube of the scene with Hold Me Up. Tons of people who don't know who Live is are posting things like "What song is this?" or "Where can I get this song?" etc. Saw one the other day "I'm dying to get my hands on a quality mp3 of this song."

You see a Live fan here or there say "It's Live but a full version of this hasn't been released."

I think it would have had some success. They SHOULD have played Hold Me Up when they went on American Idol and played Mystery. Millions upon millions upon millions of people exposed to Hold Me Up at once.

And other YouTube comment "this song was always a b-side...but it would pay 50 bucks to get this song in a great quality"

I probably would too.

Considering how it appears Live doesn't really hold this song in high regard I wouldn't be surprised if Live let someone cover it and it explodes.

I realize that there are speedbumps and roadblocks along the way to releasing something.

I get wanting to hold on to a song for your next record, then it not fitting the next record. But, at that point, why not find a way to release it?

I mentioned a few other songs, and I thought of another. "Einstein on the Beach (for an Eggman)" was withheld from Counting Crows' first album because it didn't fit. It had a small release on the album DGC Rarities, then was released (without much fanfare) on their greatest hits album.

As a big fan, I know a lot of the insides, but to bring up STP again, some rare songs of theirs "leaked" several years ago. I know the guy who received the leaks. He won't tell me who leaked them, but he SWEARS it was not a member of the band. Either way, the songs "You Can't Drive Me Away," "Heed the Water Whisperer," "Learning to Drive," "About a Fool," and "Samba Nova" were all leaked back in 2004. The first 3 were left off of No. 4, the latter 2 off of Shangri-la Dee Da.

What's interesting is that You Can't Drive Me Away eventually ended up on the True Blood Vol. 2 OST, and the latter two ended up as bonus tracks on various versions of their self-titled album from last year.

The point is that there is not a more fan-retarded band than STP. Whether it is drug-related cancellations, a lack of internet presence, or promises made that are NEVER fulfilled, they continually disappoint in every aspect other than music. Yet even THESE guys got good quality versions of unreleased songs released.

Who knows wtf Live is thinking. All I know is that the joke is on them. First, they lost considerable money by not releasing it at the proper time (and promoting the song on a tour when it was not commercially available). According to Ed it's cool that only shitty quality is available, so second, Ed inadvertently exposes how he really feels about fans--he thinks it's cool that we want something and he won't give it to us. Nice.

Yeah, that's fucked up. At the same time it is kinda cool to have such a popular track people have to search for.

Anyway, does anyone know the defining moment when Ed became such an asshole? Or was he just hiding it well?

They should just release everything. All of it. Right now. No holding on to Churchbox Sessions or bsides or any other crap. Release it all right now.
