Great, that's all I need while I'm stuck in the spiral. Unless you're trying to put me out of my misery with death by blunt force trauma to the ears.

QUOTE(tiger @ Mar 24 2011, 4:03 pm) *

Ed's vocals seemed plenty strong when I saw them a few years ago during one of their last shows. Hold Me Up especially rocked, Forever - not so much. If the dude can pull off the old songs the way I heard at that show, I'd say his vocals are fine. It's the songwriting that is weak and the way those songs are performed. I'm sure he could bust out a pretty wicked White Discussion (with Live) if he allowed himself to. Who knows if he could actually write rocking music and lyrics anymore. He doesn't seem to care to, otherwise he would have surrendered to the process with Live.

maybe when you're at a show and Ed's vocals are amped you might be able to vibe on that. But your can hear the quality decline in any recordings or youtube videos. Lots of people want the recordings to be good and I think the vocals declined dramatically by the time V was recorded.

For what it is worth Ed seemed to have some power on the album version of Grace.

Do yourself a favor. Listen to Grace, then go listen to songs like Good Pain, or White, Discussion. You'll see what I mean.

Paging Funky. music.gif Wouldn't shitty amped vocals just be loud shitty vocals? As for recording, I assume Pro Tools is used heavily to polish many rock singers voices. I remember a review of a recent Chili Peppers album where they said Anthony Kiedis was practically turned into Jeff Buckley. Surely Ed's vocals aren't that gone that they can't be cleaned up a bit if needed. Look at Chris Cornell in Soundgarden. His vocals were shot yet they still recorded their last album and although you can hear the strain they still pull it off. In concert it was a mess though. But he's back now. Any recent live footage I've seen and he seems fine. Like Chris, Ed's been giving his vocals a rest for years. I'm sure he's figured out how to manage it and can bust out the aggression when needed.

Maybe what he's refering to is a bit of reverb through the sound of the live shows. I saw Ed on his acoustic show in Melbourne and to me he sounded pretty on the money all night. When I got a recording of the show it didn't sound as great. I think when you stick a bit of reverb into a live show you'll genuinely cover up a few weak points.

Someone made a great point (perhaps it was funky) that the recording of the vocals on Ed's album/SFBM etc are very different to that of TGF's. TGF didn't layer the vocals much. It sounds all one take. Ed's sounds at times to have a few layers down to make it sound stronger.

There are a lot of ways to make bad vocals sound like great vocals in studio and live. Live you just throw some pitch correction and reverb on there, then watch the magic happen.

I don't think Ed does that though, at least not for his acoustic shows. Those recordings have always sounded very nice to my ears.

I think his lack of aggression and reliance on falsetto since 2000 has more to do with him becoming a pussy than him losing the ability. whistle.gif

Like I said above, there was a definite difference between seeing him live acoustic with his vocals as opposed to recordings I heard from the same show. Not that the recordings sounded terrible, they were good. But the live environment of just being in the theatre and such made it sound extra great that night.

I agree with the pussy part though. Like I said before, he sings old songs now with a massive smile plastered across his face. You can't make it sound like it did in the 90s when he is singing Selling The Drama looking like the chesire cat.

One of the biggest differences in the way he sings is from I Alone though. The way he sung it in the 90s had this vibe to it like he was crazy, screaming at some chick that it was just him that loved her. Sometimes I would equate the tone of the voice in the song to obsession rather than love. But now it's a pop rock love song. His pronounciation of words has changed too. Its hard to really articulate this at 5am when I can't sleep but maybe someone knows what I'm talking about.

Were you following Live in the mid 90's? The voice he had and any busting out is no longer available.

Yes, I saw them in 91 and 2009 and many times in between. He was nowhere near as intense in 2009 and his voice was quite different. However, he still managed to do justice to aggressive songs when I saw them in 2009. I'm not saying he is the same or his voice is the same but I still think he could do the old tunes just fine. Whether or not he could come up with some new rock tunes in a collaborative effort with Live is debatable to me, but not from a vocal capability point. And that's where I quit. I am exiting the spiral. Out.
