I think Ed "losing it" had more to do with him pushing his voice higher and higher, not that his vocal chords were going. Listen to V and BOP - there are some rockers on there, but instead of staying in his pocket range Ed is trying to go up high. "People Like You" is a great example of this.

When singers start to lose their voice they make the songs lower, not higher. It was a deliberate stylistic choice and one that really didn't work out.

I think Ed's edgy scream was lost by the time he recorded TDTH. e.g.The screaming on Don't Wait has nothing on White Discussion. I'm guessing this has to do with how from MJ-SS he was screaming hard for hundreds of shows.

R.E.M. I get, but if you can listen to early U2 and tell me they didn't "bring the rock" then I don't really know what to say. They mellowed out later, but they kept writing as a band and the material stayed fresh (with some duds along the way).

I could make a list of bands that are way more aggressive than Live ever was who made more than 4 great rock albums, but it is such a long list that I'm not even going to bother.

I don't think Bono's vocals were rocking for more than 4 great albums. Just to be clear, again, we're talking about rocking vocalist/songwriters, not bands....more specifically, where its is the edginess of the vocals that are a key for the band. Even if you don't think there is a argument for vocals, its still obtuse to have such animosity in demanding that a songwriter have enough inspiration or ability create more than 4 great albums.

R.E.M. made their most rocking album with their 9th release Monster in 1994. This album rocks much in the way Throwing Copper does and topped the charts around the world. They collaborated as usual and came up with 45 songs during the recording sessions. They insisted the album rock and it did.

There is no certainty that Live would have made more than 4 great albums if the band collaborated. I definitely am saying that Ed was at least a critical component in the songwriting throughout Live's career.

Decline in Ed's vocal chord functionality I'd say is probably mostly attributable to strain from constant screaming Pre-V, much more than singing falsetto post TDTH. In fact, I think his decision to sing more falsetto was a result of his voice having lost his scream/edge. I think it is especially apparent that he didn't lose his voice due to falsetto because his vocals, to me, were weaker on each successive album after TC.

Ed's vocals seemed plenty strong when I saw them a few years ago during one of their last shows. Hold Me Up especially rocked, Forever - not so much. If the dude can pull off the old songs the way I heard at that show, I'd say his vocals are fine. It's the songwriting that is weak and the way those songs are performed. I'm sure he could bust out a pretty wicked White Discussion (with Live) if he allowed himself to. Who knows if he could actually write rocking music and lyrics anymore. He doesn't seem to care to, otherwise he would have surrendered to the process with Live.
