I disagree on W,D. In any way it was mastere, it brings the spirit of the dirty, torn apart 90s in it

you can disagree all you want, but facts are facts. It is compressed to hell. And please, I hope no one else comes out and says "the band wanted it like that"....I read enough music forums, and people who don't know any better say that. I find it very coincidental that in 1994 all these bands all of a sudden decided their albums should be compressed....bottom line, it's usually not even the bands that approve of this, it's the record companies.

This whole topic may spark a debate, but again keep in mind I am fan of the band too. I am not personally attacking them by saying something sounds horrible. I am just trying to spread the word so more people become educated about how bad things have gotten in terms of music quality. A whole generation is getting used to overly compressed music, and has no idea how good albums can sound.

How many records have you mastered yourself?

I actually think Ed is spot on here. Distinct overcompression was a part of the grunge era, and I would argue, sound.

It is nowhere near as bad as the latest Metallica album.

I have masturbated to thousands of records.

Oh, what was the question again?

I know, I know, my friend. This was a question directed at mattdm11

I really hate it when people speak about smth as a pro, while their "knowledge" is based only on "reading the web" and no hands-on.

That is why I also think that if a man can not play a guitar, he has no moral right to say that this or that musician "sucks".

I don't really think that is fair, that's like saying unless you play soccer at the elite world level then you shouldn't be able to say a players performance was crap because you can't do any better. Just because someone may not have physically have had the practice in something doesn't mean someone can't be well read or have great ears for listening. Sure someone who may play a guitar will have certain advantages to those whoe don't when it comes to giving feedback. But to say you have no moral right to say something sucks is a bit far.

Did I say anything about the world level? Gimme a quote.

I said only about "no hands-on". That means that to say that someone is good or bad at smth you must first try and do smth of that kind yourself.

The world class thing was just an example. surely you've said someone is bad at something you haven't had a try at. A political leader maybe, I'm sure you've passed judgement on the sort of job someone is doing, that's like saying if you haven't had a shot at running the country then you shouldn't be able to say if they're doing a good or a bad job.
I agree that having hands on experience certainly gives you a different perspective than those who may not have had the same sort of experience, but to say you shouldn't be able to say someone is good or bad at something if you haven't done it is a bit much. Alot of the good press that TGF have had from critics, I'm guessing theres a fair few who can't play music, does that make all their reviews null and void because they can't say whether the music is good or bad?

I do get what you mean, I just don't think you can apply it in such an extreme way.

yeah, you're right....and that's why Nevermind and In Utero were minimally compressed. Same thing with Siamese Dream from SP and Superunknown from Soundgarden and Core from STP. And MJ. Is it just a coincidence that all these albums were put out in 1994 or prior? And it is it a coincidence that most the "grungy" albums from 1994 and after all of a sudden got compressed? There was just a sudden shift in sound 3 years into the grunge movement?

AND, that's why SFBM was compressed to hell too....because it's a pretty grungy record. BOP too. Get Ready from SFBM is LOUDER THAN PLOTR!!!!

I have mastered zero records. But I also know what sounds like garbage.

Agreed it is nowhere near the latest Metallica album....few are.

exactly. And I don't have great ears. I have a halfway decent system that makes songs like WD very revealing. Even my GF, who can't even tell the difference between Nirvana/STP/Soundgarden made a comment about that, which I was shocked by.

You must have a newer version CD of TC, the sound isn't as good as when it was originally molded.
