And what about Cobain saying that he is quitting Sub Pop who made him THE musician to write songs like AAG and become famous? Fucking up relationships with a label who was never betrayed by Soundgarden or Tad?

SLTS is not a pop song?

gheghe

It sounds to me nearly like Britney Spears.

And I do hate the way Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, AiC and LOADS of other bands never became as big as they really deserved it.

Cobain was a shitty musician who knew how to write songs. Second wave of punk made it so easy for him to break through and become world-famous.

well everyone has their own opinions, but back to what you were saying, I dont view Nirvana as POP music - I would view them as: alternative/hard rock or "grunge" well before i would slap "pop" on them.

if you consider cobain a "shitty musician" -- a guy who was able to take simplistic catchy melodies and "punk" them up, thats your call -- but a lot of people would disagree with you. its not his fault his band exploded (it was just the right thing at the right time) and nothing against pearl jam, soundgarden or AIC (im a huge fan of all 3), but they didnt write "Smells Like Teen Spirit". None of their singles back in the early 90s came close to that song.

Sure, because they did not have as well-structured poppy songs as SLTS. It really is a 3,5 minute long radiofriendly single.... was... back in 1991. I do think it was intended to be. Clean, groomed song.

We can also take the most popular Soundgarden song, the famous Black Hole Sun. It has a wonderful melody, also close to a pop song... but you remember that wicked guitar... it even is not a solo, but... dunno how to call it. Solo in SLTS is also very musical, that is truly not a part of the grunge psychology I feel.

Damn, this discussion can take us anywhere, but we have been offtopping for the last 30 minutes smile.gif

I think you are actually both right but from different perspectives. Kurt was a brilliant song writer with a knack for writing fantastic pop melodies although he was technically not a great guitar player. He did however, have the unique ability to deliver incredible emotion through his playing which, to me, hugely outweighs technical ability. Punk is an attitude which Kurt embodied and many of the most influential punk bands, The Damned, Ramones, The Clash, The Stooges, etc... incorporated very poppy hooks threaded into their music and this absolutely includes Nirvana.

I could never get past the fact that Kurt Cobain can't sing... like, at all. But, I struggle with the whole punk/metal genre for that reason.
