Unfortunately, I think both incarnations are going to suffer due to the last handful of albums LIVE put out. They became un-relateable to many.. if that's a word. Most people I know who used be fans saw one of their favorite bands become an indulgent tool of one person. Others who were new to the band never quite got the "new" LIVE and don't even associate them with the same band that made Throwing Copper. They don't even realize they're the same band.

The mob is fickle. The Gracious Few could be big. The songs are relevant and feed a yearning and hunger that's been missing in much of today's music scene. Quality, honest music and musicianship... virtues sorely lacking in today's industry.

There's also the fear of becoming emotionally involved in something that may not continue by design. I remember reading something about Velvet Revolver about how that despite how great they were all coming together to make this amazing group and put out amazing songs, fans knew it wouldn't last and that like any "favorite" band, you'll suffer the disappointment of not hearing them make new music..

From what I've heard so far, GF should do just fine. But what should happen and what will happen are rarely in sync. Will radio support them... will whatever and whoever that needs to happen... actually happen? I don't know. I sure hope so. Will they be an ongoing concern and put out more albums... that's the big question that I have, but again... I really really hope so.

As far as Ed goes... if you liked the recent LIVE stuff, then you'll probably dig Ed as a solo act. Beyond that, I don't see the mainstream attraction anymore.... as evidenced by one of the greatest falls from grace ... not due to drugs and tragedy... by any band who seemingly had it all.

Chris, I agree with a lot of what you said. However, to say a fall from grace, kinda perturbs me as there were factors in the industry that led to a lot of things. Read CT's blog about when things went horribly wrong.

Hoping the suits realize TGF is something the industry needs.

I do and I don't .. I really don't want the suits sinking their teeth into TGF in any way either. As much as I think they deserve success, I also love them being in total control as a nice hidden gem in rock music.

Anyhow, TGF is something loads of people around the globe have been hoping for in the world of rock, this sort of fresh air, a sudden breeze, that starts rolling out and grabs you buy the balls.

I bet

Well here's the thing... sure there was industry stuff... but you also had one person essentially drive the band into the ground in the span of 1 maybe 2 releases. I read Chad's blog... and he even lamented about eventually having guitar parts written for him. That's a studio musician, not a bandmate. I remember watching Behind the Music with Metallica where James was talking about him literally dictating what note to play when and how that was just stale and was ruining things. Chad Taylor having to show to play what someone writes down for him? C'mon... I can't think of a greater insult. The industry changed... I don't dispute that, but what sunk them, and a lot of bands, is when one person believes HE is the band, and the rest just a supporting cast.

I do consider it a fall from grace. My all time favorite band became a shell of their former selves. They literally become what Ed is doing today. It was Ed's show with the others showing up to play. Clearly they stopped being LIVE and became LIVE featuring Ed or Ed and LIVE Guys or something like that. As a fan, as someone who finds music to be a lifelong joy, that's just fucking heartbreaking to me.

You can blame Ed, you can probably just as easily blame the other guys as well for allowing it to become that way, but the reality... and beyond everyones personal feelings about it... is that things just have a way of happening and that's just it. Period. The only thing left is what's ahead today and that has gotten me very excited. The GF are making the type of music that I love... music the band loves. When you hear band members talk about how things just feel like magic and things like that, it's because it really is. When you have group of talented guys, creating and playing in a way that truly reflects who they are... what they want to do... you create the magic of synergy... that unmistakeable force that creates a whole greater than the sum of its parts. In my opinion, from what I've read about all of this... it's the one key thing that Ed lost sight of, and in some ways, maybe they all did.

I have nothing but the best wishes for everyone. Selfishly because I want great music. More so because they dedicated a lifetime to their craft and deserve to have a creative outlet worthy of their contributions.

Chris, great post again. I do have to agree with you that things happened as they did for whatever reasons. I did break my heart to buy songs from charred and hear such schlock. I stopped going to shows in 04 for a reason and didn't even know they went on hiatus until october of last year. I always thought Ed's attutude would eventually destroy the band. But not to beat him up any more. I am so glad we get TGF and what they stand for musically and emotionally.

Pokey. Understandably agreeing with you, I think TGF had to agree to some 'suits' in order to secure the distribution of their record. Lets hope that means more than one TGF record per se.

Alright, I posted some links to TGF as new music to check out on another board that has nothing to do with music to get some unbiased feedback on the sound. These responses are completely unconnected to the band and the past of it. Here are the responses, exactly as they appear (nothing was left out):

"they are pretty good."

"We have a music thread? Band's good, deffinetly adding them to my list on Pandora."

"Not too bad at all"

"Nice. I'm always looking for news bands to listen to... "

I then posted this review:

Every once in a blue moon there comes a rock and roll band that breathes new life in a music scene that has all become all show and no substance. A band that wears theirs hearts on their sleeves and serves up rock and roll music the way it's supposed to be served up. Straight from the heart with attitude, passion and energy that is guaranteed to, put it simply, rock your asses off! Ladies and gents let me introduce you to The Gracious Few.

The band is fueled and powered by guitarist Chad Taylor, bassist Patrick Dahlheimer and drummer Chad Gracey from the band Live, along with lead vocalist Kevin Martin and guitarist Sean Hennesy from the band Candlebox.

What these "Gracious Few" have created is an rock and roll album that is destined to be a classic. Good music is hard to come across and these gentlemen hit the nail on the head. With an influences that range from Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Black Sabbath and the Rolling Stones, it's hard to go wrong. As is evident on tracks like, "Appetite" loaded with its Led Zep vibe that would make John Bonham proud. Then there is the lead off single, "Honest Man", a song dedicated to all the hard working people of the world. While tracks like, "What's Wrong" and "Crying Time", show that even when the boys downshift they still can make the hair on your arms stand up. Honestly, there is something for everyone. Rock out with your parents, your younger siblings, and, hell, try it on your aunts, uncles, grandparents! This debut outing by The Gracious Few should be, wait, will be, owned by every rock fan in the world. Its great guitar riffs, amazing vocalist, and rock on attitude will inspire millions. Are you ready?!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Here are the responses that followed:

"Its a bit much saying that all the rock fans in the world will by their album. I mean they are good, but by no means that good at least IMO. "

"Yeah I'm gonna have to agree with **** on that. It's a nice review and they have some good influences it seems like, but they'd still have a long ways to go before being THAT big to where every rock fan owns their album. When it comes out, i'll definitely look into more of their songs though.."

There it is, unbiased and unconnected thoughts on the music. I will not be doing this for Ed because honestly I would be embarrased to do so on this board and I'm sure I'd catch flac for it. I like his album but I'm not going to ask other people to listen to it.

I think those guys are taking the quote about every rock fan owning it a little too literally.

No, I'm just curious why he didn't mention the topic of the message board. Is it a shameful one to post on? smile.gif
