Say it ain't so!

Looking at the other acts that are playing there, none of them have the 'no camera, no recording gear' stipulation. Granted, most of the bands aren't exactly household names... but Blondie is... and there's nothing on their page about cameras/recording gear.

Looking that their FAQ page, it states that the venue doesn't have a policy on cameras/video/audio but instead follows the wishes of the band.

There's got to be some special reason why The Gracious Few don't want cameras etc. at this show... Perhaps they're planning on recording it themselves and don't want to have a sea of people holding up their phones?

I asked one member about a taping policy a while back. I did get a response but nothing definite had been decided.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I doubt they'd be filming this for a DVD or anything, wonder if a radio station is doing something with it?

Hey, I think you have core sounds low-cost cadioids + rockboxed I-river, right ?
Your recent +LiVe+ recordings were quite enjoyable strawberry.gif

What kind of gear will you buy for an upgrade ?
Most of the stealth mics around (soundpros, microphone madness...) need to be moded so that they can handle high SPLs.

I have both SP-BMC-12 (99 USD mics) and MM-HLSC-1 (250 USD mics). Even when powered with a SP battery-box, I got distortion/brickwalling (while recording levels never reached the 0dB limit).

Got brickwalling while recording +LiVe+ in Munich in 2006, Skunk Anansie in Zürich last year and Nickelback + Theory of a Deadman in 2010.

I now have moded MM-HLSC-1. Haven't used them yet again in very loud situation but I'm optimist nod.gif

My current rig is MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod done by Chris Church) > Church Audio ST-9100 preamp > Edirol RH09 and I'm ready for TGF !!!

Ya, that's my rig.

Not sure what I'd upgrade to. I'm looking for something with a better low end than my current rig. I looked at the DPA 4060s, the Core Sound HEBs or the SP-BMC-23. But, with an open policy I might get full size mics instead of stealth mics.

Not really related to TGF, but concert bootlegs in general.

Live Nation joins effort to pre-sue concert bootleggers
Thu Aug 12, 2010 @ 11:49AM PST

By Eriq Gardner

Legal trend alert! Concert organizers are suing bootleggers before they actually bootleg. Live Nation has now joined AEG in filing a lawsuit, this time against several John Does in advance of this weekend's OzzFest, featuring Ozzy Osbourne, in Devore, Calif. Here's the complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in California on Tuesday.

Earlier this week, AEG attempted to get a court order that would have federal and local law enforcement authorities seize and impound trademark-infringing gear at this weekend's Mile High Music Festival.

The move to pre-sue anonymous troublemakers who haven't yet committed misdeeds follows similar efforts by UMG over a Lady Gaga concert earlier this summer.

From what I've heard (taper opinions and recordings) from the CS HEB, you'll only get great results if you know how to use them properly.
You want to switch from cardioids to omnis ? I did the exact contrary with my first rig beeing a pair of SP-BMC-12's.

A pair of omnis (even a good one) won't guarantee a better low end. You'll only catch more of that boomy ambiant sound that cardioid caps tend to naturally remove. Nothing to do with having deeper basses from the instruments.

IMHO best bang for the bucks nowadays is Chruch Audio's CA-14's.
Cardioid caps with nice low end. You can browse open taping artists shows over at archive.org. Do a search with "CA-14". It's quite impressive.

Sometimes you've got to wonder what planet record companies live on. Do they know why there are bootleg CDs? Answer: Because there's a market for them!

Why don't they just release what the fans want?

Two of the most bootlegged bands (Pearl Jam and Metallica) have seen the light and now release audio recordings of almost live show on their past few tours. In the past fans needed to buy bootleg CDs at exorbitant prices (we're talking $30 for a single and $60 for a double disc) or be involved in trading circles. Both ways, the bands got nothing for their efforts and the quality of the recording would be unpredictable.

These days Metallica offers downloads (MP3 or FLAC) within a couple of days of the concert occurring at a very good price ($9.95 for MP3 and $12.95 for FLAC). They also provide CD and case artwork that you can print out. People who bootleg Metallica have been put out of business!

Of course, not all bands want to go to the effort and expense of setting up this sort of recording facility and that's fair enough. There are many bands that allows fans to record their concerts and share them amongst other fans at no cost. Bands with open taping policies usually have better quality audience recordings as people can bring in decent gear. Should a band want to officially release a concert then they can retract the open policy for that particular night. And you know what? Fans will actually put away their gear because:
a) There's going to be a professional recording available
b) They don't want to jeopardise the good will the band has shown towards their fans and
c) They respect the artist!

Bands are never going to be able to stop fans from recording their shows. That's a fact. Tool is notorious for having full body pat down searches and metal detector at the entry as well as staff scouting the venue for tapers, filmers, camera and people with mobile phones yet 90% of their shows are recorded. What's the point? Why piss off your fans and not even achieve the required result?

Anyway, I'll cut my rant short...

whats up guys...

Im a fan of both LIVE and Candlebox, but have seen Candlebox much more and taped them as recently as Saturday in Ohio. I could not get ahold of Kevin at the show, but I did send their myspace a message regarding their policy this fall. They just read it yesterday, so now I just await a response. I did link them to the Candlebox policy and to my recordings at archive.org. Hopefully we will get something in the coming weeks. I really cant wait for Cincy and Columbus having heard 9 songs off the record, I know its a gem already.
