Ed Kowalczyk’s debut solo record isn’t the acoustic album that many of us anticipated after he went out on the acoustic solo tour. It is very much a rock record, with some huge instrumentation and the Live sound that Ed helped make famous. If you’re judging this from the standpoint of a Live record, it’s different from what we’re used to hearing from Ed. It’s even more spiritual, and although it does rock... it just doesn’t hit as hard. This album does not have what made Live great in its early stages. There was a lot of maniacal passion in that stuff that’s never been duplicated. The band couldn’t even match it later in their careers. That’s the only knock that you can give this album. For being a new project, it doesn’t always present that type of energy. What’s always made Kowalczyk special is his ability to write songs. It sloped off slightly at the tail end of Live, but it was still very special. This is some of the best material that he’s written in years. Making a solo record has brought out some of his best stuff and the song writing makes this record a good record. It’s a shame that all good things have to come to an end, though it can be productive if it happens at the proper time. Live is no different. Yes relationships between Ed and his former band mates have been damaged. But who knows what the future will hold. For now, Ed has a great solo debut he can stake claim in.

Ed Kowalczyk

Alive

Review by Mark Johnson

Ed Kowalczyk has been the vocalist and a major driving force in the band Live since 1991’s Mental Jewelry. Live achieved major status as a band with the release of Throwing Copper, in 1994, which propelled them into such hot concerts as Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD, Woodstock ’94, and MTV’s 120 Minutes tours. After four more successful albums and over 20 million albums sold worldwide, the band has taken a hiatus so that members can work on solo projects. Chad Taylor, Patrick Dahlheimer, and Chad Gracey went on to form the Gracious Few with Kevin Martin and Sean Hennessy of Candlebox. Their album is due out this September. Kowalczyk decided to record and produce his first solo album, which I will be reviewing here.

This is an excellent album. It’s full of inspirational lyrics and music that is just as fun to dance to as it is to listen to and remember the message being delivered. This should keep fans of the band Live happy until they get to hear the rest of the band on the Gracious Few’s album in September. If you like fast moving, inspirational music, this is your ticket this year. The lyrics and message are powerful and they are perfectly supported with guitar and drums. This album is a great start for Kowalczyk on his solo excursion. You can tell he had a lot of lyrics and emotions bottled up for which he needed an outlet. I look forward to his next album and recommend this one highly for anyone who is a fan of Live or just great rock and roll with a message.

Track by Track Review

Drive

Slow fused guitar, drums and Kowalczyk’s vocals open this one slowly and quietly. “Headed out into my desert. / All alone and thirsty for something more.” Then like a slingshot, that famous Live roar of vocals coupled with guitar and drum thunder.“Like a child falling asleep at the wheel of my life / And letting you drive / I’m letting you drive.” Live’s lyrics have always been a major part of their sound and identity, and Ed has always played a role in delivering these messages clearly. This is a cool song about trusting someone else to do the driving in your life. It can be interpreted many ways. But allowing a higher power to help give your life more direction and balance in the right direction is the way I like to see it. “Handing over the keys / Close my eyes and letting you drive.” This is a perfect opener with a strong message that this album will not only rock but hopefully also inspire.

The Great Beyond
This starts with a cool thumping drum beat with guitar riffs flowing in unison. “Oh why don’t it make you cry? / Without surrender we will never find our way.” The powerful lyrics and message really drive this one, along with revving guitar riffs which shred the air. The drums never miss a beat.

Grace
“Grace” is the first single and one of the most powerful songs on the album. Potent bass and warm guitars open this one before Kowalczyk and the drums enter the soundscape. “Is there any love at all / Every saint used to be a sinner / Every man used to be a child.” Then we get the powerful punch line as Kowalczyk’s voice rises to deliver, “You said it was all inside my mind / You were wrong, there was grace / You saw the enemy / I saw your face / People like you and I spin through space/ You were wrong, I still have faith.” The power of the guitar riffs on this one are stellar. The drums keep perfect time with the power of this piece.

Stand
Heavy drums and racing guitars open this along with Kowalczyk. “It was impossible to see the angel that was staring at me / If you could stand tall with me /What are we fighting for? / We have to believe / It was setting us up for more / So much more than we could know was waiting just down the road / If you could stand tall with me.” These are powerful lyrics that can be interpreted in many ways. “Will I be the one to rise above / Lord am I strong enough?” This one delivers on the excitement that has been building in the first three songs and it feels like you have reached the top of a mountain as the power climbs from the guitars and drums. This is an amazingly powerful tune.

Drink (Everlasting Love)
We get cool keys and guitar riffs as the tempo slows. When you’re in the right place, it just shines through in every way. The lyrics are so powerful and are very inspirational. The drums and guitars are solid in support of Kowalczyk’s vocal prowess.

Zion
Another of the better songs on an album, this is full of the vocal supremacy of the lyrics. “Take me on up to Zion where my Lord will comfort me / He will lay me down by the still water while my enemies will run from me.” It almost sounds like a spiritual with the backing vocals. The powerful guitar licks and drums fill this one with fire power all its own.

In Your Light
Drums and guitars open this message of thanks. “All I have given you I give again / You are my mountain my high place to climb / Let me take you where the music and laughter never cease.” Again we get power and praise filled with inspiration from all sides with guitar and drum support.

Just In Time
Guitar and drums setthe drama as the song opens. “Still want to write those words that light your mind and lead your heart to me / Like a baby only sees the light after he’s been born.” Inspirational lyrics and vocals lift the song and the listener’s mood. “I’m gonna bring you water / I’m gonna bring you wine…shelter from the storm”

Rome
This starts with the sounds of a busy street in Rome. Then cool drums and guitar enter before Kowalczyk takes off. The power of the message and delivery can be felt everywhere. This is one lead singer who needs to sing and sing loud. His inspiration shines through.

Soul Whispers
“Soul Whispers” is the best song on the album. “The song of my soul is sweet/ I waited for soul whispers telling me to be strong.” There is incredible inspiration here put to words and music. The guitar and drums are perfect giving support to Kowalczyk’s delivery of this powerful message.

Fire on the Mountain
Cool slow acoustic and lead electric plot a course, with the drums in support. “Just when we thought the light had gone it shows it’s self again / The purest love you’ll know / All I need I believe / What I want I can see / The fire on the mountain is calling me home.” Despite adversity, the ability to see through the darkness to the exit and the light is presented here. This is power in word and sound.

Eat Your Love
A cool guitar riff starts and then those running drums pick up pace to close the album. “I met a girl and she was talking about the end of the world.” The musicianship on this one is excellent. It’s much more instrumental and at times it really rockets past Kowalczyk’s vocals. It’s a powerful closer.

Mr. Johnsons review needs a little polishing as he's not up to speed on Live's real status. Obviously he read some other internet article or friendsoflive to find that statement.

Ed Kowalczyk - Alive (Sony)

AFTER a messy break-up with the band he made his fortune on, Ed Kowalczyk has returned.
And while Ed’s old crew Live — known for the hits Lightning Crashes and The Dolphin’s Cry — are missed by a legion of fans worldwide, Kowalczyk’s solo album should appease.

The powerhouse frontman smartly doesn’t stray too far from his former band’s signature sound on Alive with the opener Drive a forthright example.

The ballad Drink (Everlasting Love) is another strong tune that would fit neatly on Live’s breakthrough CD Throwing Copper.

The Great Beyond is something a little different as it flirts with a dance-floor beat.

As a result it’s the most bouyant tune heard from Kowalczyk in recent memory.

Lead single Grace is a powerful effort inspired by the Haiti earthquake while Soul Whispers is Ed at his haunting best.

RATING: ★★★½

IN SHORT: Passionate

Buy Ed Kowalczyk - Alive [Album] From Amazon.com

When a man such as Ed Kowalczyk, with such history and iconic status returns with a solo album instead of fronting a band, it is very easy to be dubious of what to expect. I can promise that "Alive" is definitely worth a listen and you’d be mistaken for thinking it’s just a ‘safe’ release with no real substantial content. Starting with the ooo’s and aaaa’s which are so rock and roll, it’s always going to be expected from this legend! The track goes under the name ‘Drive’ and twists the softest of ballads with the darkest of bassy and powerful arrangements, which makes for a cohesive and accessible start to this album.

Track two carries the title ‘The Great Beyond’ and it represents a ‘big sound’ for Ed and his musicians. This is the type of sound you might expect from a larger line-up. There is a careful blend of distant and airy effects, which compliment the more edgy foreground vocal and guitar work. Lead single ‘Grace’ is still a stunning track, amongst others on this fine album. I won’t go into too much depth about this song here, because I’ve done a more detailed review here. Make sure you take the time to give this track a number of listens, because it has real potential.

Taking this album as both a first time listener and as a fan of Ed Kowalczyk’s previous work, it stands to reason why he has had so much success in the past. His song writing ability appears so effortless and track after track you can immediately locate the all important hook. One fine example would be ‘In your light’ which took me one airing to be able to recite the chorus with ease. I am very impressed by the high quality and level of consistency on show throughout this CD. A soft and emotional vocal by Ed Kowalczyk captures your inner thoughts and allows you the opportunity to experience a musical journey.

Overall, this is a beautiful and sweet album. The type you might play on a sunny afternoon whilst you and a couple of mates gather around the BBQ. A great album in time for the summer! Get yourself a copy, because it is a sure-fire success. You heard it here first.

REVIEWER: RAYMOND "EVERYBODY LOVES RAY" COONEN

Well, this is the first Monday with a normal temperature after weeks filled with a lot of heat waves and the day after (and this is even much harder to swallow) the Netherlands losing the World Cup Soccer Final. But now it’s it's to to go back to the real world and report you about an album that’s already available in your record store. That’s what happens if you watch too much soccer on TV… great albums are released and pass you by without a warning. One of these releases is the new album of ex-Live front man Ed Kowalczyk. Ex-Live? Yes, the band split up in 2009. Ed Kowalczyk went solo and the other band members started a band called The Gracious Few.

The first thing that strikes me is the title of the album. “Alive”… the link to the past is quickly made. This choice of the album title didn’t need to be that obvious if you ask me. Everybody knows that Live was Ed Kowalczyk. So how does the new album sound? Will it sound completely different than Live?? No, don’t worry. Kowalczyk does on “Alive” where he’s best in. Writing energetic, melodic alternative rock songs about faith, love, children and the elements of nature…. It could have been a Live album I think, although the songs on “Alive” sound more melodic than during the Live-era. The tracks are from high quality and remind me to the “Distance To Here” period (which I think is the best Live album together with Throwing Copper). If you take a listen to the third album track and also the first single “Grace” you know what I mean. Soft acoustic beginning followed by a powerful energetic chorus. The typical Live… No, the typical Ed Kowalczyk sound is also on great songs like the opener “Drive”, “Stand”, the brilliant “In Your Light”, “Just In Time” and the best track on the album “Fire On The Mountain”. Usually I try to tell you something about every track on the album, but doing this for “Alive” would be boring.
Kowalczyk wrote all the tracks himself except for “Drink (everlasting love)” that was co-written with Chris Daughtry and for “Grace” and “Stand” co-written with Gregg Wattenberg.

On the deluxe edition you will find a bonus dvd with a video of “Grace” and acoustic versions of “Just In Time”, “Zion”, “The Great Beyond” and “Drink (everlasting love)”.

All I can say is that Ed Kowalczyk made a damn good first solo record… full with new classic rock songs. Also compliments to producer CJ Eiriksson (U2 and Matchbox 20) and Gregg Wattenberg (Train, Eve 6 and Five For Fighting) who made “Alive” one smooth ride. If you are one of the 22 million people that bought a Live album in the past you can order this album without listening first. You won’t be disappointed.
