His voice during the bridge in Where Do We Go From Here? reminds me a lot of the Throwing Copper era. Kind of that jaw-clenched, angsty "I got somethin' to say..." type sound. But then in "Get Ready" and "All I Need," he sounds like he's just kind of going thru the motions, like he could have really used a red bull when he was doing those two songs.

That's a good thread.

I admit that his voice changed. I like the observations that say that his voice is better now than in V and BOP era. It is true I think. His range is better and on SFBM he exagerates less than on other records.

There's one voice I can't stand from him. The best example is on the chorus of Home. This makes me skip the song right away. It's high and loud and I have problems with this voice. His best studio voice was in TDTH of course, he is better now in concert than 5 years ago.

Don't expect him to sing like TC and SS era. He is 34. Eddie Vedder can't do his beautiful dark low voice again also. That's Ok, it's evolution. I think he would sing Ghost better than he was doing it in SS era for example.

Opinions

Alex

I think his voice sounds so different. He totally lost the raw appeal his voice has or just doesn't want to bother. Maybe smoking damaged his cords?. He just doesn't blow like he use to. His pipes are now kinda weak, hiding behind more falsettos than usual.
I hope I'm wrong and he's just not inspired and just lazy cause then I would have some vocal tricks to look forward to on the next album after Black Mountain.
Man do I miss him doing that shaky voice thing he does so well, you know, like he does at the end of Meltdown "oh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" singing.gif whistle.gif

I don't think it's from the smoking. It's all that cunnilingus action during tours

The two biggest reasons for someone's voice changing is age and the way they use/treat their voice. Age has a big factor with the maturity of male voices (women as well, but not so late). Men's voices don't fully mature until after 30, at least. For most men the vocal range tends to go up. As for the treatment and way they use their voice, all the 'rough' sounds you guys talk of that is using the chest voice or belting. While it can be done for a number of years, it puts a lot of stress on the vocal chords and effect endurance in the short run and voice quality in the long run. So for someone to not do that as much now can be attribute to better technique and not wanting to harm their voice as much. This is achieved through using his head voice more which usually means higher range and clearer tone. A perfect example of this would be the first two verses of "I Walk the Line". In the first one Ed uses his chest voice and in the second his head voice. However, it's not always range related, you can be in your chest voice and still singing high and vice versa. So from an academic standpoint those are the two main factors that can effect someone's voice. But who knows, maybe Ed decided one day he was going to change his vocal style. BTW, Smoking will lower the voice, not raise it.

I think his voice is fine on this album. He uses many different voices which is typical for a Live album, and in my opinion carries the album.

The thing I don't like about SFBM is the lisps. It seems like Ed has developed a lisp, even some friends of mine noticed it right away on Show. It ruins the songs, and I usually skip over those tracks. I first noticed the lisp on The Awake DVD interview. Don't know if he's developing bad teeth (maybe steroids) but it's causing him to have a lisp, and it's really annoying if you begin to notice it.

I think a lot of that lisp is from the production of the album. You don't hear it much on any of the in-concert stuff.

Yeah, I agree; he has a very clear "s" on the interviews (and on the acoustic songs) on the SFBM DVD.

But...about the Awake DVD interview; didn't you notice the subtle wineglass-shots? wink.gif

"Home" is kind of lispy, but I also noticed that on the lyric sheet it's not "like the bullets leave traces" but rather, "tracers," which explains one of the lisps.
