I was at a chameleon show in july 98. it was when adam was just starting to play with the band... I was a very new fan and didn't know who he was.

That would have been Christopher Thorn (ex. Blind Melon guitarist). Adam started touring with the band in 1999.

Jimmy Lang shot some footage from these shows and it was made available to Homespun members. I'll upload them this weekend.

He seemed sad to me in this. I've had enough trainwrecks of my own to stay around here and poke fun at this one... When people have given you numerous reasons to not trust or be cautious the best you can do is steer a different way and wish them the best despite it. Maybe he did start running out of money, I can understand that for sure and the position that I've put myself in, but that's when you say go out and get another job and work 80hours a week, not screw over your friends.. so that I don't understand (though his mortgage alone likely costs more in a half year than my entire Sallie Mae student loans and credit card debt.. so he just can't goto walmart and apply..). When everything is chaotic, and everything goes wrong, and you're grasping for something- that states sucks and I don't wish it upon anyone.. but sometimes people just keep making it worse for themselves :/ . It's fun to poke fun at things but then seeing the interview made it a little more real

Ed never said that he wrote 'Overcome' due to the events of 9/11.

But on one of the talk shows (I think it was Leno) he did say that he had written the song recently, when in fact it had been written as early as 1998.

It was talked about in this thread here...

I distinctly remember watching/taping Ed on leno playing overcome very shortly after 9/11 and I remember ed telling leno that it's weird that the song fit the occassion because he had actually written it sometime before while sitting in a hotel somewhere.

That is what I also recall perfectly well

Thanks to shave98765 we have a link to thread about Overcome from last summer.
There was a link to something on mediafile, but there is nothing at the other end anymore.

So we have to go with a transcription. Here is dangum's transcription:
QUOTE(dangum @ Aug 25 2009, 6:09 am) *

Leno: I can see why it's an anthem. Boy, it's a beautiful song.

Kowalczyk: Yeah, you know it's funny as I wrote it a year ago. And umm. it's just somehow the lyric and everything and what our fans are getting from it, is just so poignant right now. It's wild.

Leno: What was your inspiration for the song? Was it?

Kowalczyk: You know, about a year ago I was coming off a tour and I was like decompressing on sort of like in a retreat mode and you know like chilling out, camping, that kind of thing (laughs) and umm, so, but I was staying in a hotel actually a couple of the nights so I was chilling and going back to the hotel and umm a couple nights in a row I just turned on the TV like CNN or something, all in this state of bliss but you know at the same time seeing what's going on in the world and you know some kind of terrorist thing going on in Israel and it was... so the song was written in the sort of like idea of like pain and bliss all happening at the same time which... I think really says a lot what we've been going through as a nation.. you know.. there's this... the pain of it all and there's this overwhelming coming together and compassion and so people are just getting that from this song.. it's, it's, it makes uh... you know as an artist it doesn't get any better than that.

So, since we all trust dan, we can agree Ed never said on Leno that he wrote Overcome after 9/11.
And I hope we can stop the "Ed is a lying liar because he said on Leno he wrote Overcome inspired by 9/11" cause someone is just going to sound foolish.

Now, since copies of performances from 1998 are floating around (also kindly provided by dan) obviously Ed wrote Overcome then, or at least the lyrics. And just as obviously, from the performances, it's not exactly the same song as the album version. If someone wants to make a big deal of that - and I'm sure someone will - no one can stop you, but is it really such a BFD?

Yeah, he just couldn't remember that they had performed that song live 3 years prior, and even demo'd it for TDTH.

How could someone forget that? While he didn't try to say he wrote it after 9/11, he was definitely trying to place it closer to the event (presumably for marketing purposes).

This is a non-argument. How minute would the advantage be to say you wrote something a year before the event, as opposed to 3 years before the event?

However, I will assume you are continuing to argue that this date re-write is somehow despicable (only because it's Ed) to get people going.

Actually, I remember back when this interview aired that I thought it was odd (and a little suspicious) that he tried to place the time line closer to the event. Back then I thought the world of Ed and was tuned into everything he did (V didn't disappoint me like it did others). So, my feelings about what he said aren't any different than they were back then.

Anyway, it isn't a non-argument at all though, have you ever been a part of marketing anything, especially music? It wouldn't shock me at all if the label asked him to fudge the truth a little to get a marketing advantage.

We'll never know though, so at least you are right about that.

Whether it be when he wrote Overcome or why he chose that spot by the tree to shoot the photo for the cover of Alive, the strange thing is that Ed demonstrates a Sarah Palin-like propensity to make stuff up as he goes along for the apparent purpose of spinning an interesting story that might sell product. It goes to character.

It's all about character and the little tidbits and signs that maybe the person inside the shiny bald veneer is not the loving, compassionate, selfless person that matches the words that come out of his mouth.

I've seen plenty of instances where Chad, Chad and Pat have been nothing but nice. And I have seen many instances of Ed being not nice. So that definitely influences my views of the things he says and does and his music. I see and hear it with a different (more negative) slant than if it came from someone else.

Is Ed now signing autographs and taking pictures? Yes. Nick says that means he is such a great guy who cares about his fans. Unless his character has changed dramatically, I say it is because Ed cares about selling tickets and cd's and he is doing what he has to do so that people like Nick and newspaper reviews can say that he is a great guy.

I don't hate Ed. Actually I really care about him - in an "I care about the rock vocalist and lyricist that I once admired and looked up to and who inspired me more than any other artist in the world, and who I enjoy hearing sing more than any other vocalist in the world" kind of way. I have listened to his music so many times. And I think it is the greatest music ever created. I have read and become inspired by stuff that he has read and become inspired by. So I really give a sh*t about Ed in a way that I don't really care about other musicians.

That's why I even take the time to post anything here about Ed. Because I do care. And I am disappointed. And I don't want to believe that he isn't a good person. Or I would like to think that he will prove me wrong or turn another leaf.

There is nothing I would like more than for Ed to completely do a 180 degree turn, reunite with Chad, Chad and Pat with friendship and forgiveness, become someone I can admire again, and return to creating music like the old Live. I'm holding out hope.
