QUOTE(Bremang @ Jul 14 2010, 2:31 am) *

Googled and got this quote
"Chinese Democracy allegedly cost around 15 million dollars to record"

I know producers can get paid 5-6 figures for an album after a record gets big but I don't know about studio costs otherwise.

Chinese Democracy took years upon years to make over many studios, musicians, and producers.

Most studios in Austin, TX (where Ed recorded Alive) cost well under $100 an hour (including an engineer). Producer cost will vary, but I seriously doubt they spent 100 grand on SFBM (for example.) Simply put, I don't think this band was spending that kind of money on studio time at this point in their career, especially not for an unknown project.

I also call bull on it because studios book and reschedule all the time. If a band like Live wants to record in your studio then you are going to reschedule them if there is a conflict.

not to get too far off topic... people keep mentioning how ed said on tv (I think I've read that it was leno) that Ed said he wrote Overcome after 9/11 (which, if he said it, would be remarkably retarded since the recorded was ready to be sold on 9/11)

where/when did that happen? can someone please find me a youtube clip?

I distinctly remember watching/taping Ed on leno playing overcome very shortly after 9/11 and I remember ed telling leno that it's weird that the song fit the occassion because he had actually written it sometime before while sitting in a hotel somewhere. I remember it because I watched it a billion times (to listen to the violin he had play with him... it was just him, not the whole band). He was wearing some ugly purple jacket that I didn't enjoy.
and he said Michelle at FOL had made the decision to release the song to the public because it fit the mood of the nation at the time.

was I on crack? because I've never done crack... that I remember...

was there some other appearance? it had to have been a different interview than the one I remember.

for the record, I'm not trying to excuse anything ed may or may not have done... simply trying to figure out if I'm going crazy.

I have no recollection of this event either, but people are so convinced of it I haven't said anything. I too would be happy to see a vid

Such a thing apparently exists as a collectible: http://www.livediscography.com/lcr_sec2_overcome.html
It was a promo VHS single "This video contains a performance of 'Overcome' by Ed Kowalczyk and a small orchestral group on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. It also contains basically any segments of the episode of The Tonight Show which had to do with Jay talking about Ed or Live, and the introduction mentioning Ed."

When I saw the interview on TV I distinctly remember he lied about when he wrote it, as the Overcome mtv video clip had been around years prior to when he said he wrote it. Fans had been waiting for it for a while.

Ed never said that he wrote 'Overcome' due to the events of 9/11.

But on one of the talk shows (I think it was Leno) he did say that he had written the song recently, when in fact it had been written as early as 1998.

when you saw the leno interview with the ugly purple (I think velvet) jacket? because I definitely remember that interview and he said he has written it much before.

or are you speaking of another interview that I've obviously never seen?

This horse may be worth beating, since it's being used to "prove" that Ed lies about everything.

Overcome was performed at the Chameleon Club shows in 1998. I remember people posting on Live-Web.com saying it was the most amazing track they'd heard from Live. When it didn't appear on TDTH there were a lot of disappointed fans...

When it finally surfaced on V, it sounded completely different.

There is a studio version of Overcome that was recorded during the TDTH sessions in the Multimedia Section if you would like a listen.

I think I have a poor quality concert version of Overcome from 1998, I'll try to post it this weekend.

my apologies for any wounded horses... I love horses and in general mean them no harm.

I totally believe it was written eons before, I just didn't know how you knew. I've not heard the subpar recordings you speak of so these were news to me.

I still, though, am waiting for someone to tell me what specific interview he lied in, because the interview I remember, he said it had been written, as you all have clearly stated, a few years before...

again, I'm not defending ed, just my own memory.

I was at a chameleon show in july 98. it was when adam was just starting to play with the band... I was a very new fan and didn't know who he was. I distinctly remember vine street during that show, and I remember several other songs that showed up on TDTH. not sure I recall overcome specifically, but I was a new fan, so I wasn't being as attentive as I would be now. I do remember some crazy girl kept touching my boyfriend's butt quite purposefully... unacceptable.
