QUOTE(Bremang @ Jul 12 2010, 4:03 am) *

I think 6-7 weeks would be plenty of time to flatten the tummy and look a lot fitter without Atkins if you do cardio, target your midsection, eat well. You're saying Atkins before the trip, and something else after, but would you be doing Atkins during your trip? As Ex said, you could very well gain it all back if you don't strictly adhere to your carb intake. I think its brutal to try to keep up with that.

I hike often w. a doctor, whose extensively conducted his own research on burning calories while backpacking/hiking up a mountain/incline. He says for someone hiking uphill wearing a pack, it is normal to burn 500-1000 calories per hour. I could be more specific w. body weight, heaviness of the pack, etc. I imagine you're going to want carbs for energy if you do hiking of any sort. If you have those carbs, I'm not too sure what would happen. In any case, good luck w. your knees on those hikes.

Stay away from our American crap food, it is terrible! though OTD's sandwhich picture looks pretty tasty haha.

haha I should mention it's not hiking as in up mountains and such, just visiting a few national park areas along the way and doing some trekking in there, but that's only a part of the overall trip. I suspect over those 5 weeks I'll still be a lot more active than I am here .. even just walking around cities, I'm stuck in an office all day here.

I def wouldn't be sticking to atkins during the trip thats one thing ... now I'm a bit torn on what to do. I could definitely construct an easier diet to come up with if i wernt on atkins, but not sure it would give me the desired weight loss in time before I go.

I asked this of Ex too, but do you know any good links to diets that you're suggesting? Maybe an example of a menu of things eaten over the course of a week? There's so much around and so much spin when I go look it's hard to know what's good and what's not.

Not when you're already a board certified 4th year. I have 6 months of vacation during the remaining 9 months. I'm done, son! There are no more 30 hour shifts DURING residency (not "getting" residency like I'm at fucking Ellis Island). The maximum is 16 in a 24 hour period, with a minimum of 8 hours between shifts and a cap of 80 hours for 1 week. But, in child psychiatry, I won't work more than 40 hours a week anyway. What a weird attempted insult. What are your credentials, though, for the record?

can you at least be clear? you are not "board certified" in the sense that you are leading most people to think. i.e., a board certified physician.

You've passed USMLE-2- and congrats on that.

must say though, child psychiatry throws me for abit of a loop.. with your ego, i would have guessed surgery..

Yes I have passed USMLE steps 1 and 2. Which means I am board certified to the degree necessary to be awarded an MD and practice medicine. And, child psych is where I want to be. It's very fun for me and there are few other specialties where you can earn 500K+ working 40 hours a week. Of all medical specialties and subspecialties, it's in the most demand. It's perfect for my plan...using medicine as a springboard to great wealth through business endeavors smile.gif

After you get rich, you should contact the Tibetian Freedom Concert promoters (I think one of them is in the Beastie Boys management) and make an under the table deal to buy a copy of the footage of Live's performance at the Tibetian Freedom Concert, and then upload a nice clear video of Change.

Hmm I'm afraid not. The beauty of exercising and eating lots of veggies and fruit and protein is that you don't really have to count too much. Eat when you're hungry, don't eat when you're full. Thats about it. Eat enough variety of plants and you'll get your vitamins. Eat small amounts throughout the day instead of giant meals a few times a day. Pound yourself with protein, needed to build muscle.

I have been thinking about what Ex said about sleep and muscle building, and hes right in that I can't find a single reputable source that suggests that you can build muscle in your sleep. However, this message is in tons of bodybuilding and exercise webpages. I don't understand how the notion became so prevalent if there was no reputable medical source to back it up.

Hahahaha, what the fuck!? lol.gif

Seen Wam's actual picture and damn it all if he isn't actually a cool looking chap.

Also, this topic has been interesting to read through. Anybody know a good diet for a broke-ass gym attending student? Preferably one that includes leeway for Subway sandwiches....

I didn't think sleed was muscle building but just muscle repairing? Unless that's the same thing .. but when you were asleep it gave the muscles optimum time to relax and be more ready for more work rather than keeping them "active" so to speak whilst being away? Fuck I'd love to go to bed and wake up ripped!

now you guys arguing has me torn on which way to go about things, good one guys tongue.gif

I can't say that I'm not curious to give the Atkins thing a shot though, but it just seems that one slip up and you've ruined it all, fucking everything seems to have carbs in it, taking a bite out of something unwittingly and you've destroyed your carb intake for the day.

Working out sort of destroys the muscle, which is a signal to your body that you need more muscle. Then you need to eat and sleep well, to provide the body with what it needs to grow those muscles.
