QUOTE(jclive @ Jul 7 2010, 5:29 am) *

I tend to look at Ed's progression from the other direction.. the 30-something year old man thinking back to the boy that he was back on those days. The Ed of 1992 was just that, a boy. I know I'm a hell of a lot wiser now that I have another 18 years of life's experiences on which to build. Would never trade that for the ignorance(for lack of a better word) of my youth.

Which is strange that the boy in this case could write so much more creatively than the man. The one with experience on his side writes in a much blander uninspiring way. This isn't just about content, but the words themselves. Even songs that were quite uplifting from TDTH era had a more creative and artistic twist compared to now days straight forward one dimensional writings. Then there's the content in that taking religion out of the equasion, "the boy" could find other things to write about, social commentary for example ... "the man" seems sort of stuck on one subject with no ability to move from it.

It's strange that like you say, when you look back on your younger self you would think "I can write a hell of a lot better now than I did back then" ... maybe Ed thinks the same, which is crazy, but I really thinks he believes what he's writing now carries more weight than songs like Negation, Operation Spirit, Top etc..

Sometimes it doesn't always come from experience but inspiration.

Once again I bring up Morrissey. Not comparing his writing to Ed's, totally different styles. But it's widely accepted in Morrissey fandom that his best writing was between the years 83-94 .. I would agree with this. He's certainly written some awesome stuff since then, but his lyrics just held a different level in the earlier years. Especially when he was starting out, he had no money, no love, trapped in a "hum drum" town, but it spurred on all the inspiration.
Now he's still withdrawn, but he's a multi millionaire and out and living life more, going to gigs and parties and socialising more, lived for 10 years just of Sunset Blvd. in LA ... the things around him that inspired his best writing were gone. Sure in life he was a hell of a lot more experienced, but the life style and surroundings that inspired his best work had gone.

I see that with Ed, he's happier now I bet, he's richer, he lives luxory, he's more experienced in life, I'm sure the 18yr old Ed would have freaked out with all these business ventures he has now going on. These things that he has in his life just don't seem to inspire the same creativity in him the way it did before.

The Gas Hed that went west left most of his best writing in his brother's bedroom in York.

You say 'uninspiring'.. But to who? Maybe to Ed it is more inspired. Afterall, it seems as if it could be inspired by his faith in God. To a man of faith, what is more inspiring than that? Similarly, to an audience who may find inspriation in songs relating to faith, this type of work would represent quite an accomplishment.

Is it for everyone? Absolutely not.

To me, the spiritual journey that Ed seems to have gone thru over all these years is very intriguing. And yes, I have no problem at all with the Christian theme of this album. To me, it is inspiring, especially when looked at in context with his entire body of work.

Got my CD just now directly from Ed. Only 11 tracks, no bonus material at all. Thanks Ed - next time I'll use I-Tunes.

As I've said, I'd appreciate if anyone could send the tracks my way. As soon as this thing is downloaded to my IPod I'm going to give it a few listens.

Wow, Eat Your Love is easily the second fave for me after Zion immediately!

If someone out there is leaking this song, I'd like to hear it. I'd like to judge this one... music.gif

I've said it before and I'll say it again. When Ed went on his own peyote trip in the desert to write TDTH, he was abducted. He was replaced with a talentless, neutered, falsetto singing version of himself.

This song should of been on the album.

It's not a classic or anything, but it's different, and better than at least half the soft christian love fest tracks

just been browsing some facebook... and here is what I saw, the replies from...err...I guess, TRUE EK fans..

Matthew L. Heath the bonus track is only available if you buy the whole album on itunes....what about us people who bought the cd??? we shouldn't have to buy it all over again just for one song.....greedy!!!

Isabel Tensen Matthew i agree with you... I already have the new album twice, so did it mean i have to buy a third??

DJ Deeney It is a joke to make fans buy something twice...just to get one track...include it, it isn't like capacity was an issue since 40 minutes is 1/2 a CD
