Eh, maybe I'm wrong then. I had just never seen it before. It just bothered me after seeing the lyric sheet at 3 consecutive shows. And he didn't just use it as a back-up. He read every word fo the song from it. Since I had never seen it before, I expected Ed to be more prepared and rehearse the songs and memorize the lyrics before getting on stage in front of a crowd. That's what I'd do. But I guess if this is common, then I can't criticize Ed for doing it.

I asked one person in particular why they figured Ed had cheated the fans. He went on to mention a decline in music. I went to suggest that Ed wasn't necessarily cheating the fans in regards to his music getting worse, and used his voice as part of the argument.

If his voice was that fucked up, why continue to tour & tour and push new songs/his agenda.....all the while remove his friends from the creative process.

Ed's behavior for 10 years was all predicated on Ed and not what was best for Live as a band then.

Who knows why they continued.

They still had fans.
Ed is a songwriter/singer, its how he makes a living.

I brought up his voice only as part of a response to your 5 points, not saying that the voice was the root of all this. I'd imagine it might have to also do with getting older, not having the same inspiration, the change in music trends, music industry, who knows.

What exactly do you think was best for Live. Even if you could figure this out, hindsight is 20/20. Would you say Ed willingly cheated the fans?

I don't have a great deal of respect for any rock musician who needs lyric/music sheets on stage. I can think of no other excuse for it than laziness or some kind of legit memory loss problem.

Ed's voice struggled in the middle of this decade, but since 2007 has been very good. Why are you starting surgery rumors anyway?

In 2003 I remember Ed being rushed to the hospital after completely loosing his voice. I believe there was surgery, but I could be wrong. There was some procedure that got his chords to produce sound again.

More irritating for me is the same stories every night out of a lead singer. That's not just an Ed problem, though, as has been pointed out earlier, a lot of bands do it and it's a shame.

Dave Gahan has been doing it since late 80s. Not the stories, but same moves each night.
For more than 25 yars already.

Then again he is fronting one of the biggest bands there exsisted.

Nick posts the evidence which turns out to be the worst piece of evidence anyone has ever produced about anything ever >

multiple examples of Ed's behavior ruining concerts for fans much more than anything C & P ever did + people trying to explain to Nick that what they did has been happening for years and in many, many bands through out history >

In amoungst all this talk about how Ed's ruined concerts much more than C & P has come the topic of Ed's failing voice >

Pretty soon we'll be onto why America should/shouldn't have invaded Iraq.

I will just add to the "Ed cheating the fans" debate that, in addition to forgetting lyrics (which doesn't really bother me that much), the last 3 or 4 times that I saw Live, Ed pulled out a lyric sheet on one of those little metal music stands and read the lyrics to God Don't Change and I think one other song (maybe Believe or Forever or something like that). He did the same thing at the acoustic shows for several songs. I have photographic evidence of that, which I can't post now because the photos are on my computer at home. But that really did bother me at the time. I didn't see Chad, Chad or Pat requiring music sheets to remember the music. They played the songs perfectly. I was bothered by Ed needing the lyric sheets. Couldn't he memorize the lyrics before the show? He was getting paid good money to perform in front of a few thousand fans. Couldn't he rehearse the songs a little more and be prepared? Chad, Chad and Pat obviously knew their parts and were prepared for the show. I've never, in all my years of concert going, never saw a performer use a lyric sheet to get through a song in front of a large crowd who paid to see a concert. And I might, possibly be able to excuse it at the first concert that he plays a new song. Not really, but maybe I'd possibly excuse it. But he did it at every show for a couple of months. I saw him do it at one show, and then again at the next and again at the next. I was thinking, WTF, can't he memorize these songs and get up and perform them for the crowd without standing in front of a goofy, piano-teacher-looking music stand reading the lyrics?!?! Over the weekend I will post pictures of this.

If it doesn't bother you that much then why did you go on to say that it bothered you a lot.

So one of those songs isn't his, the others were brand new. We're talking like the only 3 times that Ed has really done that with a lyric sheet. Meanwhile, it doesn't add to your side of the argument, because your side was saying that Ed should be respectful and use a music sheet.

I can understand how the lyric stand can look a bit tacky, but to be perfectly fair I probably wouldn't be terribly bothered by it. I guess to put it another way, I'd be as bothered by Ed's lyric stand as I'd be bothered by Chad and Pat laughing and chatting during Forever (or any song for that matter). Neither strikes me as cheating the fans.

exactly!!! this started with Nick saying the guys "half assed" it during Forever and that cheated the fans (i dont think it did), but folks countered with examples of Ed not "giving 100%"

either they ALL cheated the fans, or none of them did (with the examples mentioned..)

It might help to trace the conversation back with myself and OTDry. To sum up my most recent response to OTD, he was questioning why Live didn't quit earlier on. Then he blamed Ed for the past 10 years of Live. I gave reasons why Live might have decided to continue, and based on these reasons and others, ask him how he can blame the past 10 years on Ed still.
