Oh Hitler in a robe of truth
My emptiness has built your alter
And I worshiped myself in you forever
?
On top: I do not think Ed listens to his old tunes you know....

There are certainly moments of complexity overall, and lyrically in a thought provoking way is one of the stronger suits. but I'm talking more as in a total package.

Good post, but I have to disagree with this part. Now, I can only talk about myself but I like both styles of music. Sometimes I'm in the mood for thoughtful music but sometimes I'm in the mood to hear something catchy, something that's uplifting, something that just takes my mind away from things.

I've used this analogy before, but music to me is like movies. Over the past year or so, I've been really into low-budget independent movies, which tend to have much more emotion than most Hollywood movies. However, I also to watch popcorn action flicks and those can sometimes be my favorite movies. It's not any difference for music.

Also, you never know when a simple lyric can touch someone. Lyrics don't have to be "deep" to be meaningful.

I see where you're coming from, and I too do enjoy music that I don't have to think all that much to. Whilst I think she's certainly talented from a vocal stand point and impressive that she does at least write all her own stuff, I'm a Lady Gaga fan. And I'd have to admit though it's still a mode where I can switch my brain off and just get into it.

However, I can also feel happy knowing that I can listen to a guy like Bob Brozman, an absolute musical genius with guitar and by comparisson makes just about anyone else with a guitar seem like an amature. Something so amazingly talented and someone who continually pushes themselves to be better and better.

Some people though will only listen to the foot tapping/brain dulling stuff. They listen to what they are told is good, something a bit out of the ordinary or not mainstream is "weird" and "wont sell" ... this is the category I would put Nick in. And Ed now also.

Ed I see as a special case, like I mentioned, I have a hard time enjoying his simplicity because I fell in love with his complexities. For some artists, simplicity is all they have and therefor have reached their potential and it's easier to enjoy them for what they are.

They are... they never wrote music with a marketing strategy! It's too raw, too much creativity. All those brainwashed son of a bitches go crazy when they hear something not mainstream, that's actually sounds like raw rock 'n roll. Music must be made by some rapping, wanna-be, look-at-me-pushing-buttons retard.

The more people like your music, the more you will sell, so then your music must be awesome, even though it's complete, utter shit.

I wonder what he thinks when he hears a song like Freaks now ... my honest opinion is that he's probably still quite proud, but see's it at juvenile and something that only came about because of youthful naivety and that his work now is honestly a lot better.
But I wonder if he can recognise the level of detail and complexity in the music and lyrics and such then compared to now.

I Agree. That WAS Ed, he didn't care about polished for the masses music. His lyrics were so thought provoking. At times I thought he was beautifully insane. Freaks is a great example. In my opinion, today, he wouldnt have the courage to put a TBD or a Pillar of Davidson on a record beacause its not about the art or spontaniety or even music anymore.

Also, you never know when a simple lyric can touch someone. Lyrics don't have to be "deep" to be meaningful.

I feel the same way. I don't always feel like The Doors. Sometimes I feel like KISS (and then the neighbours complain that my platform boots make too much noise and my clown makeup is scaring the kiddies hehe.gif )
And sometimes I feel like the Beatles - early rockers, classic pop, a Hard Day's Night somewhere in between, symphonic Sgt Pepper, experimental Revolver and Magical Mystery Tour, sublime White Album and Rubber Soul... solo stuff.
Except Wings. I just could not get into them. I've always felt that Paul McCartney ran off the rails on his own. Didn't have it anymore. Trite pop music, embarrassing lyrics.
On the other hand, he was phenomenally successful, gets mega respect even for the Wings stuff from some musicologist friends of mine and ended up writing a classical oratorio. And if I hear one of his stupid Wings songs, the fucking thing is stuck in my head to the exclusion of stuff I like better. So he wins. surrender.gif

So it's kind of like the foreseeable future of the two halves of Live.
TGF find themselves right away in classic rock.
Ed drifts into stuff that's not as hard and finds some direction that some of us will like and some of us won't. He might flail about or suddenly find a creative partner or inspiration that will get his true creativity flowing again (oh please don't let it be country)
I'm willing to wait and see and in the meantime take what I like.

I don't have the same anger as you, and I will buy Ed's album because I seem to have some sort of disfunctional inability to quit him, but this was one great, insightful post. I haven't been able to express it as clearly, but this is exactly what has happened. You hit the nail on the head. It doesn't make me angry, but sort of sad. Ed lost his compass and he seems like a frustrated writer with writers block and a big ego who can't find his way back for a decade and he is doing many wrong things to his friends, business partners, fans and the music in his struggle to try and obtain what he thinks he wants. It's ironic. but if he would just stop chasing what he thinks he needs to do to get fame, fortune and commercial popularity and just look inside and create with authenticity, he might get what he wants. The problem is, I doubt he has in him what he had from the ages of 18 to 25. He's changed, his life has changed, his views have changed. I think it's gone.

What many of us love about TGF, is that those guys still possess, and have found, that musical soul they had at age 18. They are sitting in York mining pure creative Gold. And while they will try to market it to try and spread the music, the music isn't carefully crafted to try and achieve popularity. They love the music and are proud of it and it satisfies them creatively. You can hear that in the music. It's not just a product that is trying to be sold to us. It's just their music. TGF says: This is what we've got, come to us and see if you like it. Ed seems to be saying: I think this is what everybody likes right now, I'm going to try and make some of it and sell it to as many buyers as I can.

"Great, insightful post"?!???!? I'm not sure what sort of idiot it takes to write a post like the original but for someone else to the support it? This forum is becoming TERRIBLY SAD!
Its users like that which will ultimately bring about the demise of this forum and considering there are some genuine ek/tgf fans that use the forum genuinely to share and promote it is really unfair. SOmeone needs to moderate this forum and boot off dickheads who are abusing it.

This forum was nigh on dead when Live were still going, it's only picked up recently. Live were bringing about it's demise. No one here is outright trolling and IMO deserves to be banned. People like Ex, Sinful Eyes and Liverocks77 might be harsh on the language and cut straight to the chase, but they are also incredibly knowledgable on the topic of Live. They have passion even if the opinion differs from others and have all at times made quite insightful posts. I think if you start banning people like that, it'll bring demise about a lot quicker. Over modding forums generally leads to its demise when all you're left with are a bunch of boring people who sit around making "top 10 lists" of which no one reads anyone elses. Case in point, see this forum 18months ago when there was a new Hoodstock thread every day.

Harsh/cut to the chase etc is all great. And sometimes I think the rivalry ed v tgf is a good thing (certainly entertaining anyway!) but I dont think putting "f__k you" at the end of the post like that is warranted it just makes the forum lose credibility and usefullness in my opinion which isn't fair to the other 98% of people on here. Anyway your right good to see the forum has a lot of input (probably helped by the demise of FOL) hopefully it will go to a new level with the release of the albums!

Cut straight to what chase? Verbally shitting on other posters and band members? This counts as trolling in my book and obviously a few others and violates the TOS of the board.

A lot of other people are just as knowledgeable. And manage to let other people have an opinion without verbally abusing them or nailing them in rep points for daring to disagree. I know there are members here who won't post or put in real opinions because they don't want to be dogpiled.

Which which you agree so you're willing to put up with them - and of course they aren't attacking you.
I've read at least as many insightful posts by people who *are* able to express themselves without degenerating into attacks on the band members or other posters.

Wait a minute. I thought it was Live that killed the forum? But you also want it to be over-modding? Was there over-modding months ago? If there was, why are there are still people here making "harsh" posts?

I give props to maccaz and zman for having the nads to actually daring to disagree with the party line around here
