You think TGF are reaching their potential?

No, not yet. We have not heard the album. When we hear it, we will all say YES.

I think Ed's music is awesome, but that's just my opinion.

You think TGF are reaching their potential? You bring Live and Candlebox together and you get retread 70's rock? They are a total disappointment to me personally in the direction they chose sonically.

That's because you just want TGF to sound like Ed does.

And you're right, it is totally your opinion. I just have to keep reminding myself that you have a really sheltered and narrow mind when it comes to music and that you truely believe Ed is the absolute peak and greatest point music has reached in it's, I don't know, thousand-odd year history.

I think we can all agree that your opinion is absolute shit, and that you have a horrible view of both musical talent, and the music industry.

QUOTE(Existentialist @ Jun 5 2010, 1:12 am) *

In case you didn't notice, the theme is that since they lost the spotlight, each "album" has featured drastic changes all aimed at hitting a new market and trying to reinvent himself. He will keep trying until it works. And it won't, ever. It's sad. He's desperate. :

Touching upon this, I've been thinking for quite awhile that Ed's new found faith isn't genuine. Live's music has always had religious themes to it (whether in the positive or negative) and Christian music fans are a large base and a loyal one. The Ed of twenty years ago was bitterly against the church's dogma. Now, I know, people can change but that seems illogically drastic. It just stinks to me of a forced conversion in order to peddle records.

Regardless, the press release is filled with an appropriate amount of hyperbole. Marketing can be so silly sometimes.

As maddening as it is for us to see the downfall of Ed, imagine what he must feel like when he listens to MJ, TC, SS, TDTH. To know you were once so talented and now to have become a publicity whore selling pendants and coffee with Hot AC aspirations has to haunt him. Or does it?

I don't think he has a problem with "Hot AC aspirations" because that could possibly be the music he is into right now. Sometimes people tastes change. It happens.

I wonder what he thinks when he hears a song like Freaks now ... my honest opinion is that he's probably still quite proud, but see's it at juvenile and something that only came about because of youthful naivety and that his work now is honestly a lot better.
But I wonder if he can recognise the level of detail and complexity in the music and lyrics and such then compared to now.
Not that Live was ever a band of major complexity, but certainly compared to his current work it is.

Nick argues that he likes the new stuff better than the old stuff, that's fine, but it's incredibly ignorant to believe the new stuff is more complex and creative than the old. Ed must recognise this and just simply be happier putting his brain in neutral and going for it. He must just like that better and maybe enjoy the simplicity of it. Which brings me back to my original point that he's not reaching his potential. If an artist isn't constantly pushing themselves creatively to develope and evolve and go to new places ... then to me that's not passion, and if there's no passion, it's hard to get behind.

Some people will willingly admit that they will just listen to whatever, they're not real music fans. They like tapping their foot to a track and not having to think about music. That's Nick and Ed now I believe. That way of thinking totally baffles me and is frustrating. But if that's just how you are, then I guess that's fine. But to say that is better than pushing and challenging yourself and reaching your potential is just mad.

Good post, but I have to disagree with this part. Now, I can only talk about myself but I like both styles of music. Sometimes I'm in the mood for thoughtful music but sometimes I'm in the mood to hear something catchy, something that's uplifting, something that just takes my mind away from things.

I've used this analogy before, but music to me is like movies. Over the past year or so, I've been really into low-budget independent movies, which tend to have much more emotion than most Hollywood movies. However, I also to watch popcorn action flicks and those can sometimes be my favorite movies. It's not any difference for music.

Also, you never know when a simple lyric can touch someone. Lyrics don't have to be "deep" to be meaningful.

Many years ago, Live was going to play at Muhlenburg College in Pennsylvania. I remember someone posting on a message board for the college talking about how Live were Hitler supporters and referenced Top. lol.gif

I do think Ed listens his old stuff as he mentioned many times that The Distance to Here is his favorite album. How many Throwing Copper songs were in Live's setlist? The only songs I don't think they have played in the past couple of years is Stage, TBD, and Pillar.

QUOTE(SJN1279 @ Jun 4 2010, 5:19 pm) *

Fans both old and new will be immediately drawn to the first single “Grace” – a soaring, hard-hitting song destined to be a rock radio staple.

Why the continual need to say how much this rocks, the forced anger in the Grace video, the references to how he has recaptured his 90's form? He's grasping for straws trying to gain credibility for his current work. He'd gain more credibility just settling into his current christian pop rock persona. He's been this guy for some time now. Just own it. That goes for the fans too.
