That's the key question.

I think, if they both put out the albums THEY want to put out, them they're both successful in the way that counts as an artist.

You may think what Ed is doing is shit, but if he's digging it, then it's working for him, and that's cool. He's obviously not making his brand of music for you.

There will be folks who think TGF's music is shit, too, you know? That doesn't make it anymore true than those who don't like Ed's music.

It's all subjective.

So I would say success is defined by the goals you set for yourself.

yep. agree.

I think most of us here get it and pretty much know what sound we're more in favour of. I'll probably pick up Ed's CD even though it won't be my favourite stuff he's done in his career.

All that is true about the nature of success, but the original poster was polling in regards to success defined by album sales, general public perception and reputation.

I'm being honest with myself. Although it bugs me I'd say Ed.

1st off - both of these bands are older and honestly will struggle to develop young fans. If you disagree then fine, but I firmly believe this. (I don't see Chad Taylor posters on any high school kids walls happening again). They are past that market, so they have to rely on the middle age crowd which devotes less income to music.

Ed will be touring as Ed - lead singer of Live. He also will present a familiar sound because he is the voice of Live. People are familiar with it and the brand Live.

I have to say Kevin, lead singer of Candlebox, although somewhat known, simply does not carry the same weight. The sound also has no nestalgia to it. Kevin simply sounds different and I think the difference in sound will actually cost the band members from both bases. I think that will ultimately leave them with a minute following.

TGF has no name recongnition at all and unless they get on the air, which may or may not happen, I think they'll struggle to develop a substantial fanbase. The only people really aware and care that TGF exist are dedicated Live and Candlebox fans. As you guys know those numbers have been dwindling for years.

Ed will always appeal to the casual Live fan because of the voice.

In the end, however, I think it's safe to say that on any tour these groups will always be opening acts unless they are going for the extremely small venues on their own.
